Veteran Nollywood actor and filmmaker Taiwo Hassan, better known to his fans as Ogogo, is dead. The popular Yoruba movie actor died at the age of 66 following a battle with doctors said was a stage-four cancer.

The actor’s death was confirmed by Kira Taiwo, his daughter, in an emotional Instagram Live session on Sunday, August 23, 2026.

The development came few days after the family publicly disclosed his health condition and appealed for urgent medical assistance.

1. Full name

Taiwo Hassan was the full name of the veteran actor, although he became widely known by his stage name, Ogogo.

He was also referred to in some biographies as Taiwo Babatunde Hassan or Taiwo Babajide Al Hassan.

 
He built his reputation primarily in Yoruba-language cinema and became one of the most recognisable faces of the Nigerian film industry.

Ogogo was born on October 31, 1959, in Ilaro, Ogun State.

However, he was unable to complete his secondary education because of financial difficulties.

Ogogo began his acting career in 1981.

According to reports, his debut stage role was as Akiigbe, an ewi chanter, in a stage production at the National Museum in Onikan, Lagos.
