Police arrest 14-year-old housemaid for lecturer’s murder

The police authorities in Niger State say they have arrested the prime suspect in the killing of Dr Fumilola Adefolalu, a lecturer with the Federal University of Technology, Minna.

Recall that on October 29, Adefolalu was found murdered in her residence in the Gbaiko Area of the town.

Police Public Relations Officer, Wasiu Abiodun, disclosed the arrest of the prime suspect, saying two other suspects connected to the crime were at large.

He said that efforts were ongoing to apprehend them.

The 14-year-old teenage prime suspect is said a domestic help to late Dr. Adefololu for almost three weeks, the police spokesman said.

The police spokesman noted that the suspect confessed to how she and classmates – Walex and Smart – conspired to attack the lecturer at her residence on Saturday, October 28 with a motorcycle and she surfaced at the gate, while the late lecturer opened the gate for her.

“During interrogation, the suspect confessed that she served as the deceased’s housemaid for about three weeks, and she was laid off due to her misdeed in the house,” she said.

“After she was laid off, she met her classmates called Walex and Smart, narrated her ordeal to them, and conspired to attack the lecturer at her residence.

“Afekafe said they went to the lecturer’s residence on October 28, 2023, around 1600hrs, with a motorcycle and she surfaced at the gate, while the lecturer opened the gate for her.

“Walex and Smart later entered, beat and hit the lecturer’s head with a stool and stabbed her with a knife brought by Walex while Smart took another knife from the kitchen, and stabbed her severally.”

Abiodun said the suspect will be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department SCID for further investigation and diligent prosecution, while an effort is ongoing to arrest other fleeing suspects.

Lagos seals Cubana Chief Priest’s Lekki restaurant for noise pollution

The Lagos state government has sealed off a fast food restaurant owned by the Lagos socialite Cubana Chief Priest.

Cubana Chiefpriest, real name Pascal Okechukwu, runs Donald’s Fast Food, a restaurant along Adebayo Doherty Street in Lekki 1.

Tokunbo Wahab, the Lagos state’s commissioner for environment, said the restaurant was sealed off on Sunday for noise pollution.

He said the Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency (LASEPA) issued several warnings to the eatery but it failed to adhere to them

“After several warnings and abatement notices, the Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency sealed Donald’s Fast Food on Adebayo Doherty Street, Lekki 1 over noise pollution and other environmental infractions,” the commissioner tweeted.

Cubana Chiefpriest, as of this report, has yet to speak on the matter.

LASEPA frequently cracks down on clubs and recreational centres in response to noise complaints from residents.

In 2023, LASEPA sealed off the Quilox nightclub in Victoria Island after road users complained of a gridlock it caused.

UPDATED: Goods worth millions destroyed as fire guts Lagos plank market

Fire has razed the Oko Baba plank market in the Ebute Metta area of Lagos State.

 

The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) confirmed this in a statement on Sunday.

LASEMA spokesman, Nosa Okunbor, said officials of the LASEMA Response Team, LRU Fire Unit, Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service have embarked on a search and rescue operation at Oko Baba plank market by Ibadan Street, Ebute Metta.

He said the immediate cause of the fire is unknown, adding that no life was lost or injuries sustained as a result of the incident.

 

“The fire consumed the main plank market, major parts of the shanties and goods worth millions of Naira,” Okunbor said.

“The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, LASEMA, received distress calls via the 767 / 112 Toll-Free Emergency lines at 1020hrs.


“The Agency activated it’s Cobra Squad from the Onipanu Base and arrived the incident scene at 11020hrs.

“Upon arrival at the scene, it was observed that a plank market and shanties spread on a large expanse of land was engulfed by fire.


“The cause and origin of the fire outbreak could not be ascertained as at time of reporting this incident.”

The LASEMA spokesman said that the fire has been completely extinguished as emergency responders have secured the entire area.

According to him, the “dampening down is in progress to prevent re-ignition,” with “occupants enlightened on the dangers, major causes, and ways of preventing fire outbreaks in market areas.”

BREAKING: Fire guts Lagos Plank market

Officials of the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Services and the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency are currently attending to a fire outbreak at the Oko Baba plank market in the Ebute Metta area of the state.

An X user, Adedeji Olalekan, tweeting as #Stylomedia, disclosed on Sunday that the fire also affected the shanties in the market.


He tweeted, “Okobaba Street is on fire now, all the shanties are burning.”

 

Confirming the incident in a terse message on WhatsApp, LASEMA’s spokesperson, Nosa Okunbor, said emergency responders are at the scene carrying out a search and rescue operation.

 

Okunbor said, “LASEMA Response Team, LRU Fire Unit, Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service in search and rescue operation at Oko Baba plank market by Ibadan Street, Ebute Metta.”
