Flood ravages houses, farmhands in Ibadan
Hundreds of residents of Ido local government area in Oyo state have lost property worth millions of naira to flood after a torrential rainfall on Friday.
It was gathered that the heavy rains of Friday evening affected and destroyed the means of livelihood of hundreds of residents in towns and villages of the local government.
Some of the affected areas are Omi Adio, Ido and Apata.
On Sunday, it was gathered that shops, vehicles and buildings worth millions of naira at Omi Adio market were affected while farmlands and fish ponds were also washed away by the torrential downpour.
One of the affected farmers, Festus Adesina told newsmen that no fewer than 80 fish farms were affected.
He lamented that he invested over N10m into his fish farming all of which were lost to the flood.
A trader who was also affected, Alhaja Alimot Adeleke appealed to well-meaning Nigerians to assist the victims, claiming she lost bags of garri, bags of cassava flowers and other foodstuff as a result of the flood.
Adeleke added that she used the shop to raise her three children after the demise of her husband.
“Now, where do I start from, everything is gone in the flood. Please help, please help. I am finished”.
Mr Isiaka Kamorudeen, a fish farmer with five fish ponds along Omi Adio and Ido town who was also affected, revealed how all the fish in the ponds were lost in the rains.
“I have concluded plans to harvest the fish, they were already five months only to see all the ponds emptied by flood. I even saw some of the fishes on the main road where some youths were fighting over them. This is a tragedy that will not be forgotten in life”.
Siminalayi Fubara, governor of Rivers, says the state government will support he families of victims affected by the multiple tanker explosion.
Fubara spoke on Saturday when he visited the scene of the accident alongside Olatunji Disu, commissioner for police in Rivers, and Maximus Nwafor, commissioner for energy.
On Friday night, tankers laden with petroleum products burst into flames on a section of the East-West road in Eleme, Rivers state, leaving an unspecified number of people killed.
The inferno which had also left travellers stranded for hours, engulfed over 50 vehicles, with some bodies found burnt beyond recognition in cars and in a nearby drainage.
The governor directed security agencies to conduct a thorough assessment of the accident to facilitate the provision of aid to families of victims.
“Yesterday around 7-8pm, we got information about a very serious inferno that was caused by a tanker conveying PMS,” he said.
“I got the information through the MD of Indorama and immediately alerted the security agencies. From what we are seeing this morning, it was not a very pleasant case.
“We recorded, from what I am seeing, a huge number of vehicles being destroyed and souls lost.
“I have already asked the security agencies to give us a full brief. So that we can come into the situation fully by seeing how much we can support the families of the bereaved and see how we can cushion the effect of the losses.”
The governor also lamented the deteriorating condition of the Eleme section of the East-West road.
“We all know the situation of this road; it is unfortunate. Most of our people when plying this road do so with caution,” he added.
