Wike, Secondus face-off behind PDP crisis – Conflict reconciliation panel

PDP CRISIS

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) conflict reconciliation panel has attributed the leadership crisis tearing apart the opposition party to the battle between Rivers State Governor Nyesom Wike and suspended Chairman Uche Secondus.

The eight-man panel, headed by former Senate President David Mark, has decided to meet with the two gladiators before the end of this week to press for the withdrawal of court cases in connection with the crisis.

There has been a plethora of cases since the Rivers State High Court granted an interim injunction stopping Secondus from parading himself as chairman or conducting affairs of the party. The ruling also endorsed the suspension of his membership of the party.

The order was made following a suit filed against Secondus and the PDP by some members of the party identified as Ibeawuchi Ernest Alex, Dennis Nna Amadi, Emmanuel Stephen and Umezirike Onucha.

Secondus went to a Kebbi State High Court to obtain another injunction restoring him. Following this, a set of party members obtained another injunction at a Cross River High Court restraining Secondus. All the courts are of coordinate jurisdiction.

Yesterday, Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN) Justice Tanko Muhammad, who is also chairman of the Nigeria Judicial Council (NUJ), invited the chief judges of Rivers, Cross River, Kebbi, Jigawa, Anambra and Imo states over issuance of conflicting rulings on the PDP and the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) political crises.

The David Mark panel, it was learnt, is of the opinion that only the withdrawal of all suits in court could enable the PDP to hold a hitch-free national convention on October 31.

According to a source, members have identified Wike and Secondus as the arrowheads of the crisis rocking the PDP.

The source said: “We have resolved to hold a frank session with Wike and Secondus within the next 48 hours. We will make the observations of party leaders known to them and seek their cooperation on the way out for the crises.

“Our minimum demand is immediate withdrawal of all cases in court in order to restore stability to the party. Without the withdrawal of the cases, the PDP national convention cannot hold on October 31.

“The conflicting orders from different courts have not helped the nation’s democracy and the image of PDP as a democratic party.

“Don’t forget that withdrawal of cases was a major mandate given to us by the National Caucus.

“We will use the opportunity to seek their opinions on all issues that led to the crisis in order to avert a repeat. By the time we interact with them, there may be some of their backers or foot soldiers we need to reach out to.

“After they agree to withdraw the cases, we will look for internal solutions after meeting with the key actors and their supporters.”

The source added: “This crisis may lead to recommendations from the panel on how to handle such whenever it occurs in future. Our report may even guide PDP to look its constitution on intra-party disputes.”

The source said the panel might meet Wike and Secondus separately.

The eight-man panel was raised by the National Caucus of the party on Friday.

Speaking to reporters at the end of the meeting, Tambuwal said: “In view of the fact that we are yet to receive that court order from Kebbi State High Court, we empanelled this committee (Mark committee). It is part of what this committee is going to look at, and all the parties involved accordingly.

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has released the 2024 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) results.

JAMB’s Registrar Ishaq Oloyede announced the release of the UTME results in a press conference held at the board’s headquarters in Bwari on the outskirts of Abuja.

According to Oloyede, over 1.94 million candidates registered and sat for the examination in 118 towns and over 700 centres across the country.

The examination which began on Friday the 19th of April ended on Monday the 29th of April. Out of the 1,989,668 registered candidates, 80, 810 were absent. A total of 1, 904, 189 sat the UTME within the six days of the examination.

“Out of the 1,842,464 released results, a paltry 0.4% scored above 300 while 24% scored 50% (200/400) and above,” the JAMB chief said.

He said 1,1,402,490, which is 76 per cent of the candidates got below 200. JAMB, however, re-echoed its resolve not to publish the name of the highest-scoring candidate.

“It is common knowledge that the Board has, at various fora, restated its unwillingness to publish the names of its best-performing candidates, as it considers its UTME as only a ranking examination on account of the other parameters that would constitute what would later be considered the minimum admissible score for candidates seeking admission to tertiary institutions,” Oloyede noted.

More Female Enrolees
A further breakdown of the number of candidates who sat for the examination showed that the females were more than males.

The JAMB registrar said 982,393 males representing 49.4 per cent enrolled for the 2024 UTME as against 1,007,275 females which is 50.6 per cent.

Oloyede said “it is evident that there is a significant improvement in the enrolment of females, with over one million girls registering for the examination.

“This is the first time in three years that the number of females will be more than that of their male counterparts.

Court grants EFCC order to freeze 1,146 accounts over ‘unauthorised foreign exchange’ transactions

A federal high court in Abuja has granted an interim order to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to freeze at least 1,146 bank accounts belonging to individuals and companies over “unauthorised foreign exchange” transactions.

The commission is also investigating the individuals for “money laundering and terrorism financing”.

Emeka Nwite, the presiding judge, granted the order while ruling on an ex-parte motion moved by Ekele Iheanacho, counsel to the EFCC.

The court also ordered the commission to conclude the investigation within 90 days.

“That an order of this honourable court is hereby made freezing the bank accounts stated in the schedule below which accounts are owned by various individuals who are currently being investigated in a case involving the offences of unauthorised dealing in foreign exchange, money laundering and terrorism financing to the extent that the investigation will be for a period of 90 (Ninety) days,” the judge ruled.

NAN reports that though the ruling was delivered on April 24, the certified true copy was seen on Monday.

The motion by the anti-graft agency was brought under section 44 (2) and (K) of the 1999 Constitution; section 34 of the EFCC Establishment Act 2004; section 7(8) of the Money Laundering Prevention and Prohibition Act 2022 and under the inherent jurisdiction of the court.

The commission said, “the bank accounts in respect of which the reliefs are sought are subject matters of investigation by the EFCC in relation to money laundering and terrorism financing”.

“That preliminary investigation conducted thus far reveals that the bank accounts are linked to persons who take advantage of the virtual cryptocurrency exchange platforms to illegally manipulate the value of Naira and launder proceeds of unlawful activities,” the agency added in the motion filed before the court.

“That there is a need to preserve the funds in the identified bank accounts pending the conclusion of the investigation and possible prosecution.”
