TB Joshua’s lying-in-state

Deep emotions were on display and tears flowed freely on Thursday at the Synagogue Church of All Nations (SCOAN) in Ikotun, Lagos State, venue of the late lying-in-state ceremony for Prophet Temitope Balogun (T. B.) Joshua, founder of the church.

Joshua died after a church service at SCOAN on June 5, a week to his 58 birthday anniversary. He will be buried today.

It was a global day of tributes for the late prophet, as hundreds of people from different cultures and countries lined up yesterday to pay their last respects to the SCOAN founder.

The Manager of Super Sport, DSTV, Mr. Felix Awogu, told reporters that the late Joshua had been a major financier of sports in Nigeria.

He said the preacher pulled the national team out of a financial crisis during the 2013 Nation’s Cup.

According to him, the prophet donated a huge sum of money to the national team to support the project.

The Founder of Belema Oil Producing Limited, Mr. Tein Jack-Rich, and his wife, Elizabeth, described the late prophet as a kind and great philanthropist.

Pastor Modesta Montero from Ecuador said the SCOAN founder helped his community to rebuild a school that was destroyed by earthquake.

He said the late Joshua donated $400,000 to the school and built an information technology centre for the community.

Montero added that Joshua taught him that “Christian life is practical and should be lived out of love for others”.

Also, in a tribute, Joshua’s widow, Evelyn, said her 31 years of marriage to the late prophet was not without trials.

She said that her husband taught her to understand that trials strengthened children of God.

“For gold to become gold, it must pass through fire,” she said.

Evelyn recalled her husband’s dedication to his ministry, saying: “You grew the church from an eight-member assembly sitting on a mat to the level we are today.

“You grew me to be the woman I am today. I stand here today to say thank you for choosing me, caring for me and nurturing me.

“Thank you for being a good father to the children, thank you for shielding me from those who were bent on soiling our lives; you were undeterred.”

She said that her husband spent his life on things that would outlive him.

Evelyn said her husband’s death was peaceful, but regretted that he would no longer be seen on earth.

The late prophet’s first daughter, Mrs. Sarah Joshua-Moshi, said her father taught her everything she knew about the Word of God.

She said her father created time to care for her and her siblings.

“He told me that the work of God is beautiful. Indeed you lived a life of sacrifice till your last moment on earth.

“I will truly miss your conversations with me. I will truly miss your wisdom,” she said.

His son-in-law, Mr. Brian Moshi, said the late Joshua lived an exemplary life of service to God and humanity.

Moshi said that his father-in-law could do many things at the same time.

“You were a great teacher, yet a good student, a lion, yet a lamb.

“I have doubted so many times if you were human; you never waited for tomorrow to accomplish what could be done today,” Moshi said.

A number of foreigners attended the event.

Pastor Jorge Arevalo from Honduras and a Ghanaian, Mr. Ebenezer First-Quao, read a biography of the late SCOAN founder.

In the biography, they read how the late prophet attained great heights from a humble beginning.

President Bola Tinubu has appointed Jim Ovia as the chairman of the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND).

Ajuri Ngelale, presidential spokesperson, announced the appointment of Ovia, chairman of Zenith Bank, in a statement on Friday.

Ngelale said Tinubu believes that Ovia will bring his immense wealth of experience to ensure that no Nigerian student suffers a paucity of funds in the quest for tertiary education.

On April 3, Tinubu signed the student loans amendment bill into law to provide Nigerians with quality and accessible education.

The law will allow Nigerian students in tertiary institutions to access low-interest loans for tuition and other academic needs.

Subsequently, the president appointed Akintunde Sawyerr as the managing director and chief executive officer (CEO) of the fund.

Tinubu also appointed Frederick Oluwafemi Akinfala as the executive director of finance and administration, while Mustapha Iyal will serve as the executive director of operations of NELFUND.

ICPC detains TETFund boss ‘over questionable N7.6bn project’

The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) has detained Sonny Echono, executive secretary of the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund).

Demola Bakare, ICPC spokesperson, confirmed the development on Friday.

Bakare said that Echono was invited by the anti-graft agency on Thursday.

“The executive secretary of TETFund is here with us. He has been invited for questioning. He is still in custody. He was invited yesterday.” Bakare said.

“He was invited on Thursday. He has not been released. He’s still with us. Investigation is still ongoing.”

It was earlier reported that TETfund awarded two contracts to Fides Et Ratio Academy and Pole Global Marketing (PGM) within two months at the cost of N3.8 billion respectively without the approval of the federal executive council (FEC), which is required for the contract size.

The contract was to provide capacity building course and learning management systems to about 2 million students across higher institutions in the country.

In a rejoinder, TETFund said it did not award N7.6 billion contracts to two companies without due process.

The agency said it was wrong to say they were contracts, whereas they were ICT projects implemented under a memorandum of understanding (MoU) which doesn’t require competitive bidding in public procurement.

TETFund further said its disbursement guidelines were approved by the president on the recommendation of the “Fund’s Board of Trustees and concurrence of the Honourable Minister of Education in line with the TETFund Act 2011″.

In an interview with TheCable, Echono said there was no form of irregularity in the N7.6 billion project.
