No reason for Nnamdi Kanu’s imprisonment, says Obi

Published

Thepresidential candidate of Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has said that there is no reason for Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous Peoples of Biafra (IPOB), to be in prison.

Obi spoke recently when he visited some Nigerians in Washington DC, United States.

The presidential candidate of Labour Party in the 2023 general election, said no one should be arrested for speaking on radio, adding that it does not make sense.

He said as a politician, people usually call him names and that he does not see that as an offence.

Obi said if elected president, he will engage with all agitators to understand their grievances and seek ways to resolve them.

“I have said this repeatedly, there is no reason for keeping (in prison) Nnamdi Kanu. As far as I’m concerned, there’s no reason whatsoever,” he said.

“You cannot arrest somebody because he was speaking on radio and calling people names. It doesn’t make sense. Anybody can tell you anything. I’m a politician. People call me all sorts of names.

“I don’t think calling me names is an offence. It is not an offence.

“If I’m in government today, I will discuss with all agitators. I will engage with them. I will consult with them.

“Because I believe that they have a reason for whatever they want to do. It’s only by engaging them that we’ll learn and see how we can solve it.”

Speaking further, Obi said elections are rigged in Nigeria because Nigerians want it to be rigged.

The former Anambra governor added that elections cannot be rigged if Nigerians stay in their polling units after voting to protect their votes.

Recall that in November 2025, James Omotosho, a judge at the federal high court in Abuja, sentenced Kanu to life imprisonment for terrorism charges.

Kanu was handed life imprisonment for counts one, four, five and six of a seven-count charges.

The IPOB leader got 20 years and five years’ imprisonment on counts three and seven, respectively.

During the court proceedings, a DSS officer claimed that the IPOB leader admitted during interrogation to inciting Nigerians to launch attacks on police officers.

Another DSS officer had linked the violence that trailed the #EndSARS protest to the inciting comments by Kanu.

Full list: Here are the 48 property forfeited to FG by ex-Attorney-General Malami

The Federal High Court in Abuja on Wednesday ordered the final forfeiture of 48 of the 57 property linked to former Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami (SAN), to the Federal Government.

Justice Joyce Abdulmalik, in her judgment, held that the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission had established the reasonable suspicion required under the law to justify the forfeiture.

The judge ruled that Malami, members of his family and companies linked to the assets failed to dislodge the EFCC’s allegation that the properties were acquired with proceeds of unlawful activities.

The court held that the issue before it was not ownership of the properties but the legitimacy of the funds used to acquire them.

Following the judgment, 48 properties were ordered forfeited, while the court discharged the interim forfeiture order in respect of the remaining assets.

The EFCC had listed the properties and received an interim forfeiture order from Justice Emeka Nwite of Federal High Court sitting in Abuja in January, 2026.

In a statement issued at the time, the EFCC’s spokesman, Dele Oyewale, said the properties are valued at about N213.2 billion.

He said the property span the Federal Capital Territory, Kebbi, Kano and Kaduna states and include hotels, residential buildings, commercial plazas, schools, factories, a university, filling stations, warehouses and large parcels of land.

Although the specific nine propertiy were excluded from the final forfeiture order cannot be immediately determined, PUNCH Online presents the list of the 57 properties initially covered by the EFCC’s interim forfeiture order marked FHCIABJ/CS/20/2026:

Senate donates N50m to families of  teachers, soldiers who died in Oyo rescue operation

Published

The senate has approved the sum of N50 million as donation to the families of two teachers and three security personnel who lost their lives during the abduction and rescue operation of pupils and teachers in Oriire LGA of Oyo state.

While announcing the donation at plenary on Wednesday, the senate president, Godswill Akpabio, said each of the five bereaved families would receive N10 million from the upper legislative chamber.

The donation comes days after security agencies successfully rescued the abducted schoolchildren and teachers after almost two months in captivity.

The rescue operation claimed the lives of three military officers — F.A. Isaac, Silas Musa and Abena John Jerome

Two teachers — Michael Oyedokun and John Olaleye — also lost their lives during the abduction.

Akpabio recalled that the senate had, on Tuesday, commended President Bola Tinubu and the security agencies for the successful rescue operation.

He said the senate also recognised the sacrifices made by security personnel who died during the mission.

“We also noted the fact that three of the personnel who went for rescue operations lost their lives in the course of trying to rescue those children,” Akpabio said.

“An army lieutenant from Adamawa was killed, a police sergeant was killed, another private soldier was killed, and many people were wounded.”

He added that two teachers who were abducted alongside the pupils were also killed while in captivity.

“So, we have taken the motion to applaud the government, we applauded the security agencies, and we are pleading that the same be extended to any other part of the country, wherever there may be any Nigerian in captivity,” he said.

“So today we just felt, after a discussion with the leaders, that we are going to also support the victims’ families. Like the young lieutenant was just 28 years old.

“So we are sending a token of N50 million to them, to be divided among the five deceased families — the families of the two teachers and the families of the three operatives who lost their lives. N10 million each on behalf of the senate.”

The proposal was adopted by voice vote.
