Corps member, nine others die in Lagos three-storey building collapse

Published

A three-storey building, which collapsed in the Ebute Metta area of Lagos State, has claimed the lives of 10 tenants, including a member of the National Youth Service Corps, identified simply as Oluwakemi.

No fewer than 24 occupants were also injured in the tragic incident, which happened on Sunday.

The injured victims with less degree of injuries were treated on the spot and discharged, while others who sustained severe injuries, after being stabilised by emergency responders at the incident scene, were rushed to a general hospital for further treatment.

The ocuupants of the building were in their various apartments when it caved in around 9.30pm on Sunday.

While some occupants were lucky enough to find their way out of the collapsed structure, others were trapped beneath the rubble.

Before the arrival of emergency responders, some members of the community searched the rubble and rescued the trapped victims.

One of the survivors, Isaac Irhrhi, who escaped death by a whisker, said he came out with members of his family.

He said, “I am speechless; I give glory to God for being alive. Friends, children, mothers have died, but my family and I came out alive. When the building collapsed, it sounded like thunder as everything went down.

“My flat is on the last floor, so I was able to break the ceiling to create a way to see outside. My wife, child and neighbours were calling me, so I directed them to where I was and started pulling them out. Aside from my wife and child, I was able to pull two neighbours out of the rubble.”

A mother of two, Kehinde Enifeni, a tenant in a house beside the collapsed building, said the structure fell and blocked the entrance to her flat, adding that she and her children escaped by breaking the window.

She said, “I was shocked when I heard the noise, but as I attempted opening the door, I couldn’t. I broke our fence and the structure fell on our compound and blocked our entrance, including the window of my parlour.

“I began crying; my husband started shouting my name and saying I should rush into the room. I quickly rushed there, got a knife, cut the net of the window in the room, but the window had burglary-proof bars.

“Suddenly, some guys came from nowhere and started breaking the burglary-proof bars and we all came out through the window. My neighbour, Alfa, and his family used a ladder to climb down into the compound because the rubble also blocked the entrance to his flat.”

Another resident, Lanre Shobaloju, said the tragedy occurred due to government negligence, lamenting that the building had been in a bad condition for years.

He said, “The government has been sealing and unsealing the place for more than four times. The last result, which is the collapse, is what they wanted and the building has killed people, including youths.

“One of my agents, Toheeb, lost his life. A young boy, Chinonso, also lost his life; Khalid, who was aspiring to go to university, also lost his life. LASBCA was here to seal the place and it is surprising that the agency still allowed people to reside in the building.

“There is a chance that the agency’s officials were bribed. The tragedy should have been averted if the tenants had been evacuated as I have been complaining that all the pillars and decking of the building had become weak.

“The house was built by a developer about 22 years ago and from what we gathered, the developer would have handed over the building to its owners on May 31 until it collapsed yesterday.”

Emergency responders, including the National Emergency Management Agency, Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, Lagos State Fire and Rescue Services, Lagos State Building Control Agency, police, and Red Cross were sighted at the scene of the incident on Monday.

THE BUILDING BEFORE IT COLLAPSED ON SUNDAY

As the excavators dug deeper and pierced through concrete and iron rods, the lifeless bodies of 10 occupants, including children, were recovered and placed in body bags.

A crowd of onlookers and sympathisers were seen crying profusely as emergency officials carried the corpses in body bags into vehicles for onward transfer to a mortuary.

A trader in one of the shops in the affected building, Francis Egbuonu, while recounting his losses, said valuables amounting to N10m were lost to the incident.

He said, “I took delivery of new goods on Saturday and deposited them there to take to another location on Monday, but the building collapsed on Sunday and destroyed most of my goods valued at about N10m.”

Addressing journalists at the scene of the incident, the Coordinator, NEMA, Ibrahim Farinloye, said the 10 victims who lost their lives to the incident consisted of four females and six males.

He said, “The incident was said to have started around 9.30pm and since that time, the first responders, who were the community members, came in and they really assisted before the arrival of statutory agencies.

“When we got there, we had about 20 people rescued. So far, we have about 24 people rescued alive and 10 recovered dead.

“The body of an NYSC lady, Oluwakemi, was discovered and removed. Her father identified her; she was found with her phone in her hand. Operation is still ongoing; we are not sure if we will still see more until we get to ground zero.

“From indications and comments, the building has been distressed for a long time and we learnt that they (tenants) were given notices to move out, but some of them moved while others refused to move.”

Farinloye noted that the landlord’s son, who was managing the building, stated that he had given the tenants quit notices, but they refused to leave.

“He (landlord’s son) revealed that he had to leave the building and he rented an apartment in the same vicinity. He further stated that rental fees had not been paid for a long time,” he added.

The Permanent Secretary, LASEMA, Dr Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, said casualties with severe injuries were transferred to the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital, Ikeja.

He said, “On arrival at the incident scene, an old three-storey building, comprising rooms and parlours, was discovered to have collapsed. Further information gathered revealed that the incident occurred around 10.56pm with an undetermined number of people trapped.

“Search and rescue ongoing; 23 adults rescued alive and 10 bodies recovered.

“Building and adjoining structures are being secured before the affected building will be levelled to ground zero. All key stakeholders are working together at the scene. Further updates to follow.”

The Head, Lagos State Fire and Rescue Services, Margaret Adeseye, said all the first and major responders were still collaborating to mop up the incident scene.

She said, “Twenty four were rescued alive with varying degrees of injury and all in stable condition, including two that are responding to treatment. Ten were suspected dead — six males and four females.”

A fuel tanker on Saturday morning fell and caught fire at the Ibafo/Aseese axis of the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.

The Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Agency said that no life was lost.

Emergency responders—men of the Fire Rescue Services, Federal Road Safety Corps, and others worked to put out the fire.

The fire incident was eventually successfully contained.

Emergency operatives remain on the ground to assist in easing the traffic congestion caused by the incident.

TRACE Spokesperson, Babatunde Akinbiyi, said that the incident happened around 7am.

His message read, “Fire update at Ibafo. As of 0830 hrs., the fire has finally been put to rest. Traffic is gradually moving.

“Operatives are on the ground to ease the traffic. I will provide additional updates later.”

Meanwhile, TRACE Divisional Commander, Mowe-Ibafo, Kabir Ojerinde, confirmed that no lives were lost in the accident.

He mentioned that the trans-loading of the remaining fuel into another tanker is currently ongoing.

Regarding the cause of the accident, Ojerinde explained, “Yes, the crash happened very early in the morning around 5:30 am. Fortunately, there were no other vehicles involved.

“While we cannot confirm if overspeeding was a factor, the tanker was said to have overturned and caught fire.

“The emergency response was swift, and we moved the truck from the road to ease traffic.

He also noted that the name of the filling station or tanker owner remains unknown at this time.

“The tanker is burnt beyond recognition, so we do not have details about the tanker’s ownership and number plate,” he added.

On the other hand, the Ogun FRSC spokesperson, Florence Okpe, said in a statement that five adult males were involved but no casualties were recorded.

This was contained in a statement titled, “Crash Report of a Burning Tanker at Ibafo along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.”

The statement read, “The crash occurred at 0657 hrs this morning on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway around the Ago Igbala/Ibafo area of Ogun State.

“A total of five persons were involved, all male adults, and fortunately, neither death nor injury were recorded.

“The vehicle involved was an IVECO truck with no number plate on it.

“The suspected cause of the lone crash was speed, and the vehicle lost control and crashed. The tanker was loaded with fuel, and no casualties were recorded.

“The rescue operation has come to a conclusion, but traffic managers are still managing the traffic situation caused by the crash.”

‘Two Nigerian women’ found dead in UK apartment

Two women have been found dead inside an apartment in Nottingham, UK.

In a statement, Nottinghamshire police said officers were called to a property in Radford, an inner-city area of Nottingham, on Tuesday morning over concerns about the welfare of the occupants.

Officers forced their way into the house by breaking down the back door and found the bodies of two women inside.

Daily Mail reports that neighbours believe that the women — mother and daughter with the former being in her 40s and the latter in her late teens or early 20s — are originally from Nigeria.

Ruby Burrow, Nottinghamshire police spokesperson, said the bodies were “lain undiscovered for some time”, adding that investigations are on to ascertain how and when the women died.

“Police were called at 11.04 am yesterday after concerns were raised for the welfare of the occupants of a property in Hartley Road, Radford,” the statement reads.

“Officers later gained entry to the address and found the bodies of two women inside. It is believed they had lain undiscovered for some time.

“Whilst we don’t believe there to be an immediate risk to the public, we are keeping an open mind into what has happened at this address and will be working hard over the next few days to establish how and when these two women lost their lives.

“In the meantime, my thoughts — and those of every other officer involved in this investigation — are with those who have died, their family and friends.

“Whilst our investigation remains at an early stage, we do not currently believe what happened to be suspicious.”

The police said it has enlisted the help of a “forensic pathologist” who will be in a better position to determine what happened once officers conclude their report”.

NEIGHBOURS SPEAK

Deborah Williams, 48, who lives on the same street, narrated how social services had visited her home on different occasions because they were unable to find the deceased.

“The social workers would ask if I had seen them recently. But the fact is they would really keep themselves to themselves,” she said.

“I would only really notice them when they left the house to go out shopping. My mum would sometimes see them in the supermarket. The daughter would be pushing a trolley with one hand, with her mum holding the other.

“I never heard the girl speak. I don’t know how severe her disability was, but I think she was non-verbal. But her mum was always very calm with her when I heard them from my garden.

“It is very sad. I think social services have probably finally triggered the police to break in. They came on Tuesday morning and tried to bash the door down, then ended up using power tools to gain entry.”

Williams said she last saw the pair in February.

“They would go away somewhere for months at a time and then come back, so I just figured that is what had happened this time, and why I hadn’t seen them,” she said.

“Now I wish I had been a bit more switched on. But no one, not a friend or relative seems to have missed them apart from social services. I only ever saw one visitor — a woman who looked a bit like the mum who I took to be maybe a sister.

“I think perhaps the mum has passed away somehow. [The daughter] was not someone you could leave on her own. She was completely dependent on her mum.

“The last thing I heard (from the house)… was a sound that I originally thought was cats. I didn’t realise until now that I hadn’t heard a peep from either of them.”

Ade Chukwu, a 37-year-old, who lives close to the house, said they were “really quiet”.

“You wouldn’t have really known they were there. But it is really tragic. I feel very sorry for them. Something awful has obviously gone off in there. It is really sad to think they have probably been laying there for weeks,” Chukwu said.

Mohamed Hasan, another neighbour, said he would sometimes see what he assumed to be the mother and her physically challenged daughter waiting for a taxi in the morning.

“That is the only time I would see them. They wouldn’t be very social. Every day a taxi would come and they would be waiting here,” Hasan said.
