Good morning! Nigerian Newspapers Headlines: CNG deployment: Commuters await fare cut as FG invests $2.5bn

Published

on

1. The Federal Government has begun engaging state governors, transport unions and commercial fleet operators to enforce lower transport fares for commuters using Compressed Natural Gas-powered vehicles, as its CNG initiative attracts more than $2.5bn in private-sector investment.

The Presidential Initiative on Compressed Natural Gas and Electric Vehicles said it would introduce stickers displaying designated routes and approved fares on buses deployed under its programme to improve transparency and prevent operators from overcharging passengers.

2. The United States of America has placed Nigeria on its Child Soldiers Prevention Act blacklist, saying the designation could lead to cuts in military training, weapons sales, foreign military financing, and defence cooperation from October 1, 2026, unless President Donald Trump issues a waiver. This came after the State Department’s 2026 Trafficking in Persons Report cited the continued recruitment and use of children by Boko Haram and ISIS-West Africa on Nigerian soil.

3. The Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar III, has said Islamic leaders will draw political leaders’ attention to the hardship facing Nigerians and press for measures to improve the welfare of ordinary citizens. He said religious leaders were aware of the concerns raised by Nigerians and would continue to urge those in authority to address the challenges confronting the country.

4. Vice President Kashim Shettima has issued a rallying call to the North to support President Bola Tinubu’s re-election bid in the 2027 presidential election, declaring that the region has nothing to fear from a second term for the President. Shettima also urged northern leaders and citizens to unite behind the President’s re-election bid, describing the administration’s second-term agenda as a “secure, bulletproof guarantee for the region.”

5. Former Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Yusuf Buratai (retd.), disclosed on Monday that the $1 billion approved by the Federal Government for defence procurement during his tenure as Army Chief was released to the Ministry of Defence and not directly to the services. Buratai said the funds, which were approved by the National Economic Council (NEC), did not pass through his hands or the accounts of the Nigerian Army, Navy or Air Force.

6. Troops of the Nigerian Army, in collaboration with personnel of the Department of State Services (DSS), the Nigeria Police Force, local hunters and forest guards, have killed three suspected kidnappers and rescued an abducted victim in Edo State. The operation was conducted on Sunday at Sasaro Forest in the Akoko-Edo Local Government Area of the state.

7. Dangote Petroleum Refinery’s public offer has reportedly attracted subscriptions several times above its original fundraising target, with a fourfold subscription of the N2.15tn offer value translating to about N8.61tn. President of Dangote Group, Aliko Dangote, disclosed on Monday that subscriptions had exceeded the amount the company originally intended to raise by more than three or four times, as the refinery extended the closing date of its share offer by two weeks to attract more African investors.

8. The Minister of Works, David Umahi, has defended the Federal Government’s decision to divert the Ondo section of the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway, saying the original route crossed terrain with pits more than 100 metres deep, which would have significantly increased construction costs. Umahi spoke in Abuja while providing an update on President Bola Tinubu’s four legacy road projects, insisting that the diversion was based on engineering considerations and the need to ensure value for public funds.

9. The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, on Monday declared himself the field commander of President Bola Tinubu’s re-election campaign in the FCT, pledging to coordinate the President’s campaign in the territory and Rivers State ahead of the 2027 general elections. Wike made the declaration at a Rainbow Coalition stakeholders’ meeting in Abuja, where he unveiled a cross-party mobilisation strategy involving members of the All Progressives Congress, APC, and the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, to secure Tinubu’s re-election.

10. A Federal High Court in Abuja heard on Monday that international terrorist organisation – Al-Qaeda –  supported members of the proscribed terrorist group – Jama’atu Ansarul Muslimina fi-Biladis Sudan (ANSARU) –  to stage the May 15 attacks on schools in  Oriire Local Government, Oyo State. The attacks, the court also heard, were to force the Federal Government to release their leaders who were arrested and being prosecuted.

‘Delusion of grandeur’ — Shettima calls Peter Obi master of bogus statistics

Vice President Kashim Shettima has knocked former Anambra State Governor, Peter Obi, describing him as “the master of bogus statistics and incoherent economic prescriptions”.

Shettima made the remark on Wednesday at the inauguration of the All Progressives Congress Presidential Campaign Council at the State House Banquet Hall, Presidential Villa, Abuja.

Calling Obi “my very good friend”, the Vice President mocked his habit of comparing Nigeria with other countries, especially Bangladesh.

Shettima stated. “He seems convinced that a size 36 shirt tailored for Bangladesh will somehow fit Nigeria’s size 52 frame.”

He said Obi’s “fascination with foreign comparisons overlooks the peculiarities that distinguish one nation from another”.

According to Shettima, “Governance is an art that demands mastery of context, whether social, economic, political or institutional.

“What succeeds in Bangladesh cannot simply be transplanted to Nigeria without accounting for the differences in our population, economic structures, institutions and national circumstances.

“A country of over 250 million people cannot be governed through borrowed statistics and economic prescriptions detached from its peculiarities.”

The VP said he respected Obi but accused him of making a “bogus claim” about winning the 2023 presidential election without evidence to support the assertion.

“This is called delusion of grandeur.
Our contest is with the politics of yesterday dressed as tomorrow’s deliverance,” he said.

Obi has frequently cited Bangladesh in his criticism of the Tinubu administration’s economic management, including its borrowing.

In February, he said Nigeria’s challenge was fund mismanagement, not borrowing.

Obi ran as the Labour Party candidate in 2023 and finished third behind Tinubu and Atiku Abubakar.

He challenged Tinubu’s victory in court, and the Supreme Court dismissed his appeal and affirmed Tinubu’s election in October 2023.

Obi is seeking the presidency again in the election on January 16, 2027, on the platform of the Nigeria Democratic Congress.

El-Rufai’s associates earmarked $600,000 to compromise EFCC probe, DSS witness tells court

A forensic investigator with the Department of State Services (DSS), Segun Kayode, has told a Kaduna state high court, sitting in Kawoa, that Nasir el-Rufai, former Kaduna state governor, and some of his associates earmarked $600,000 to pay officials of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and intermediaries.

Kayode, who is the first prosecution witness in the ongoing trial, made the allegation on Tuesday while testifying before the court presided over by Justice Darius Khobo.

According to the witness, $500,000 and $100,000 were allegedly set aside for the payments, adding that forensic audio recordings captured conversations involving el-Rufai and some of his suspected associates.

According to Kayode, the recorded conversations centred on alleged efforts to frustrate an EFCC investigation into a company identified as Singularity.

He said a senior advocate of Nigeria (SAN), another individual and Bashir el-Rufai, were among those allegedly mentioned in the conversations.

Kayode told the court that the SAN and the other individual were allegedly directed to meet one Ahmadu Sule to obtain a template previously used to liquidate another company, with the intention of applying a similar process to Singularity.

The investigator further alleged that the discussions included plans to liquidate the company in Nigeria and Mauritius, where it was reportedly under investigation by the Nigerian Financial Intelligence Unit.

He also alleged that the recordings contained discussions about preventing the EFCC from investigating a company he said was listed on the New York Stock Exchange.

The allegations formed part of the prosecution’s evidence against the former governor and have yet to be established by the court.

Proceedings lasted nearly eight hours, from 12:26pm to 8:18pm, with about two hours devoted to playing the recorded conversations.

After Kayode submitted a hard copy of his findings to the court clerk, the defence objected, saying the document should have been served earlier to allow the legal team to study its contents.

The judge ruled that the defence could obtain a certified true copy of the document admitted as Exhibit One for examination.

The court adjourned the case until November 30 and December 1, 2026, for the continuation of cross-examination, following agreement by the prosecution and defence.

Ex-mafia boss Keffe D jailed 40 years for Tupac’s murder

Duane “Keffe D” Davis, the former gang leader convicted of orchestrating the 1996 murder of rap icon Tupac Shakur, has been sentenced to at least 40 years in prison.

Davis, 63, was found guilty by a jury in September of one count of murder with a deadly weapon for Shakur’s death.

Tupac was killed on September 7, 1996, after suffering a gunshot wound from a drive-by shooting. The rapper died six days after being put on life support. He was in Las Vegas for a Mike Tyson heavyweight fight.

Davis, one-time leader of the South Side Compton Crips, was arrested in September 2024. His trial began in August in a Las Vegas court — 30 years after the fatal shooting and a week after jury selection.

At the start of the hearing, Davis pleaded not guilty to a murder charge involving the use of a deadly weapon in connection with gang activity.

The jurors then deliberated for about three hours, after which they found Davis guilty of murder with the use of a deadly weapon with the intent to promote, further or assist a criminal gang.

In their verdict, the twelve jurors agreed that Davis was guilty of orchestrating the murder of Tupac.

“Count one, murder with use of a deadly weapon, guilty of first-degree murder with use of a deadly weapon,” the foreperson of the jury announced to the court.

When Carli Kierny, the presiding judge, asked Davis if he had anything to say on Tuesday, he replied: “I’m good. I’m gonna appeal this case for sure”.

Before handing down the sentence, Kierny told him: “You don’t get to take a man from his family.

“You don’t get to take his very life, his whole future from him, and just walk away from it. Especially when that man is Tupac Shakur. The world never forgot about him and his death.”
