Operativea of the Nigeria Police Force National Cybercrimes Centre (NPF-NCCC) have arrested seven suspects over alleged money laundering, business email compromise, sextortion, blackmail, romance scams and other internet-related offences.

The assistant inspector-general of police (AIG) in charge of the centre, Akaninyene Ezima, announced the arrests on Wednesday at a news conference in Abuja.

Ezima said one of the suspects was arrested after the German Federal Police, known as the Bundeskriminalamt (BKA), requested the preservation of data associated with an internet protocol (IP) address allegedly used in a sophisticated business email compromise operation.

The AIG said the investigation, codenamed “Operation Broken Mask”, was conducted in collaboration with the BKA and the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) under the Budapest Convention 24/7 Network.

According to him, the suspect was arrested on July 20 at his residence in Megamound Estate, Lekki, Lagos, after investigative processes linked him to the alleged scheme.

Ezima said forensic examination of devices recovered from the suspect’s residence revealed more than 12.5 million email logs belonging to victims in over 50 countries.

He said the suspect’s bank verification number (BVN) was linked to accounts with six financial institutions and fintech platforms, while a Mercedes-Benz AMG GLC 43 allegedly purchased with proceeds of crime was also recovered.

The police chief said the suspect allegedly used phishing kits obtained through Telegram to compromise the Microsoft 365 credentials of employees at targeted companies.

Ezima said the suspect allegedly made more than N100 million from the operation.

“The suspect’s bank verification number was linked to accounts maintained with six financial institutions and fintech platforms, including Guaranty Trust Bank, Zenith Bank, FairMoney, Carbon, OPay and PalmPay,” he said.

The AIG also disclosed that the centre arrested a technology company owner over alleged international cyber-enabled investment fraud and money laundering.

He said the suspect was arrested following a petition filed by Ugwu Francisca & Co. on behalf of Elizabeth and Prince Iruaregbon.

According to AIG Ezima, the petition alleged that the complainants lost N56.3 million after they were induced to invest in a WhatsApp-based stock trading platform that promised high returns.

He said the investigation traced the funds to accounts operated by entities allegedly linked to the syndicate.

He said the suspect’s technology company allegedly served as a channel for converting proceeds of the fraud.

He said an examination of the company’s account with Save Heaven Microfinance Bank showed terminal cash-out inflows and outflows of N3.2 billion between October 30, 2025, and May 31, 2026.

The AIG added that investigators found that about N3.6 billion in suspected proceeds of crime was converted to Tether (USDT) stablecoins through Bybit peer-to-peer transactions.

He said the suspect was arrested on August 13 in Agiliti, Lagos, and allegedly admitted to owning Kestart Technology and engaging in peer-to-peer cryptocurrency trading on Bybit.

Ezima further said two suspects were arrested in Anambra over alleged conspiracy, identity theft, impersonation and computer-related fraud.

He said the investigation followed a complaint by Faruk Yabo, permanent secretary at the federal ministry of solid minerals development, who alleged that an individual was impersonating him on WhatsApp and Facebook.

According to him, the suspects were arrested on August 4 following technical intelligence and other investigative activities.

He said police recovered 24 registered and 33 unregistered MTN SIM cards, 26 registered and 18 unregistered Airtel SIM cards, as well as an MTN toolkit.

Ezima said one of the suspects admitted to buying and selling registered and unregistered SIM cards and creating a social media account in the identity of a United Kingdom (UK) citizen, which was allegedly used to defraud people in India.

Babafemi said the suspects, who had returned to Nigeria for holidays, were arrested after body scans confirmed that they had ingested illicit substances.

Yahoo boy jailed seven years for defrauding American $205,238

A Federal Capital Territory High Court in Abuja has sentenced one Nwachi Chidozie Kingsley to seven years’ imprisonment for defrauding an American woman, Nicole Kierulff Sayers, of $205,238 under false pretence.

According to a statement issued on Thursday by Dele Oyewale, head,  media & publicity of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC),
Justice U.P. Kekemeke of the FCT High Court, Maitama, in his judgement, also also ordered Kingsley to refund the victim the full amount.

The EFCC said Kingsley was sentenced to seven years on each of the two counts against him, with the sentences to run concurrently at the Kuje Correctional Centre, Abuja, without an option of fine.

The charges bordered on possession of a document containing false pretence and obtaining money by false pretence in connection with a purported contract with the Federal Ministry of Works and Housing.

According to the Commission, one of the charges accused Kingsley of possessing a fake notice of intent to award a contract allegedly issued in his name by the ministry. The second count accused him of obtaining $205,238 from Sayers by falsely claiming that the money was needed to finance a government contract.

Testifying before the court, Sayers, an American lawyer based in Oregon, United States, said Kingsley first contacted her through Facebook on her birthday.

“I know the defendant. The defendant messaged me on Facebook on my birthday and he said he was a member of the same spiritual organization as me,” she told the court.

Sayers said their conversations later developed into a romantic relationship, which made her trust Kingsley and believe his claims.

According to her testimony, Kingsley subsequently requested money to facilitate the award of a contract by the Federal Ministry of Works and Housing. She said he claimed that some men were threatening his life because he had not provided the money required to secure the contract.

The witness told the court that Kingsley supplied her with details of the purported contract, including a logo and other information, which she believed because of the emotional attachment she had developed towards him.

She said his initial request was for $15,000, which he promised to repay within 45 days. She transferred the money through a money transfer application.

Sayers further testified that Kingsley later introduced her to members of his family during a video call, during which they allegedly thanked her for helping him secure the purported contract.

She said she had transferred approximately $40,000 to him before travelling to Nigeria to meet him in person.

According to the witness, she arrived in Abuja in March 2022 and spent two weeks with Kingsley at his rented house in Sun City, Abuja. She said she continued the relationship because she wanted to recover her money.

Sayers alleged that Kingsley subsequently requested additional funds for various purposes, including medical emergencies, surgeries, malaria treatment and supplies for the purported government contract.

She told the court that the requests involved more than 125 transactions and that, by her estimate, she transferred well over $200,000 to him within 12 months.

The witness also said Kingsley presented a document he claimed showed that he had attempted to transfer $10,000 to her.

According to her, he claimed that the bank had intercepted the transaction because the money was allegedly linked to the misappropriation of government funds, which he said had led to his arrest and detention.

Sayers further alleged that Kingsley asked her to provide money for his bail and for bribes connected to the purported criminal case.

She told the court that she repeatedly demanded a refund, adding that Kingsley eventually requested her bank details and promised to transfer the money the following day but failed to do so.

She said she later realised that he would not repay the money.

At the conclusion of the prosecution’s case, EFCC counsel, Fatsuma Muhammad, urged the court to convict and sentence Kingsley in accordance with the law.

In his judgment, Justice Kekemeke found Kingsley guilty on the two counts and imposed the prison terms without an option of fine. The court also ordered him to restitute the $205,238 to Sayers.
