Global Peace Movement Commends Ola Olukoyede for Turning Proceeds of Corruption into National Assets

Published

on

Dr Mike Uyi, President of Global Peace Movement International, has commended the Executive Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Mr. Ola Olukoyede, for converting proceeds of corruption into tangible national assets.

His commendation comes barely a day after President Bola Tinubu directed the EFCC to channel recovered funds into the Nigerian Education Loan Fund, NELFUND, to invest in the future of young Nigerians and support the growth of the nation’s education sector.

The Federal Government is investing billions of recovered funds into NELFUND and Consumer Credit Corporation, CREDICORP.

Dr. Uyi described the Federal Government’s decision to channel liquid EFCC recoveries into NELFUND and Consumer Credit Corporation, CREDICORP as an investment in Nigeria’s future.

Uyi said the policy demonstrated that resources recovered from financial crimes could be deliberately redirected towards building human capital, and that Olukoyede had shown the anti-corruption war should not end with arrests, prosecutions and convictions, but must produce measurable benefits for society.

He pointed to the forfeiture of 48 properties linked to former Attorney-General of the Federation Abubakar Malami, ordered by a Federal High Court in Abuja in July 2026 after the court held that the respondents had failed to dislodge the EFCC’s case that the properties were acquired through proceeds of unlawful activities.

Uyi described the scale of the recovery as particularly significant, saying it showed the Commission’s willingness to pursue forfeiture proceedings even against highly placed former public officials.

He also cited the Commission’s legal victory over assets linked to former Central Bank of Nigeria Governor Godwin Emefiele as evidence of the depth of the anti-corruption drive.

It would be recalled that the Supreme Court in July 2026 affirmed the final forfeiture of seven high-value properties, $2.045 million and share certificates linked to Emefiele, restoring an earlier Federal High Court order after the case passed through the Court of Appeal.

According to Uyi, the outcome demonstrated that “no office, position or status should place anyone beyond the reach of accountability.”

The President of Global Peace Movement International said, “There is something particularly significant about taking money or assets recovered from crime and using them to educate young Nigerians. It means that what was taken away from society through corruption is being returned to society in the form of opportunity.

“This is where I believe Olukoyede’s leadership deserves special commendation. He has helped to demonstrate that the success of an anti-corruption agency should not be measured only by the number of people arrested or convicted, but also by what happens to the resources recovered.

“When a recovered asset becomes a school facility, when recovered funds support a student to remain in university, or when a forfeited property becomes a public asset, Nigerians can physically see the dividends of the fight against corruption.”

He commended the EFCC’s intensified campaign against cybercrime, noting that a major nationwide operation led to the arrest of 792 suspects, including 193 foreign nationals who were investigated, prosecuted, convicted and later deported after serving their prison terms.

He said the operation showed that Olukoyede’s EFCC was confronting the increasingly sophisticated cybercrime ecosystem threatening Nigeria’s international reputation and exploiting young people.

In July 2026, the EFCC handed over 1,452 recovered hostel items, comprising 501 double-step bunk beds, 939 mattresses and 12 wooden beds with mattresses, to the Federal Ministry of Education for use in schools across the country.

Olukoyede said the items were recovered during Operation Eagle Flush, which he described as the Commission’s largest single operation.
“Corruption takes away from the future. Education builds the future.

So, when proceeds of corruption are recovered and channelled into education, there is a powerful sense of restoration,” Uyi said.

He urged the Federal Government to sustain the policy while strengthening transparency and accountability in the management of recovered funds and assets. “Olukoyede is showing that an anti-corruption agency can do more than recover stolen resources; it can help return those resources to the people in ways that strengthen the country’s future,” he said.

Uyi described the growing link between EFCC recoveries and education funding as “one of the most compelling examples of turning the proceeds of accountability into the foundation for opportunity,” saying its sustainability could give the anti-corruption campaign a deeper and more enduring meaning for ordinary Nigerians.

Minister of Education, Tunji Alausa, had disclosed after a Federal Executive Council meeting that President Bola Tinubu directed that all liquid funds recovered by the EFCC be transferred to NELFUND to support its growing obligations, alongside unclaimed dividends from the Capital Market Trust Fund and the Dormant Account Trust Fund.

Alausa clarified that the directive does not cover seized properties or other non-liquid assets, but specifically liquid recovered funds.

Wale Tinubu, Rabiu, others Join President Tinubu in Makkah for Umrah

The Group Chief Executive Oando Plc, Jubril Adewale Tinubu; Chairman of BUA Group, Abdul Samad Rabiu, and several other Nigerian business mogul have joined President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in Makkah, Saudi Arabia, for the performance of Umrah, the lesser Islamic pilgrimage.

The presence of the prominent Nigerian business leaders alongside the President in the holy city has drawn attention, bringing together three influential figures from Nigeria’s political and business communities in a moment of religious observance.

Tinubu and Rabiu, both prominent names in Nigeria’s corporate landscape, were seen alongside the President dressed in the traditional white Ihram garments worn by Muslim pilgrims performing Umrah.

Umrah, unlike the obligatory Hajj pilgrimage, can be undertaken at any time of the year. It involves a series of religious rites in Makkah and holds profound spiritual significance for Muslims across the world.

For the Nigerian business community, the appearance of the corporate leaders alongside the President also offers a glimpse into the intersection of faith, business and public life, particularly when influential figures come together outside the usual settings of boardrooms, corporate engagements and official functions.

The development comes as President Tinubu undertook the pilgrimage to seek divine guidance and offer prayers for Nigeria’s peace, unity, stability and progress.

According to the Presidency, the President performed the Umrah rites early Friday, October 30, at the Grand Mosque, Masjid al-Haram, where he circumambulated the Holy Ka’abah.

Speaking after completing the spiritual exercise, Tinubu described the pilgrimage as significant, linking it to his commitment to Nigeria and its people. He also expressed gratitude to Allah for the opportunity to pray for the country.

The President’s prayers reportedly centre on national harmony, security, economic prosperity and the need for Nigerians to live together peacefully.

Rabiu also used the occasion to express his hopes for the country, describing it as an honour to accompany the President on the spiritual journey. He prayed for lasting peace, unity and prosperity in Nigeria.

For Tinubu, whose Oando Group occupies a prominent position in Nigeria’s energy industry, the journey offered a departure from the familiar world of corporate leadership and business engagements. Rabiu, similarly, is a major player in the country’s industrial sector, with interests spanning manufacturing, cement and food production.

Their appearance in Makkah alongside the President underscores the presence of leading figures from Nigeria’s private sector at an important spiritual moment for the country’s leader.

Umrah, often described as the lesser pilgrimage, is a significant act of worship in Islam. Unlike Hajj, which takes place during a specific period in the Islamic calendar, Umrah can be performed throughout the year.

President Tinubu is expected to return to Nigeria next week after completing his spiritual engagements in Saudi Arabia.

Atiku’s son Abba Abubakar promises to deliver Adamawa for Tinubu

Published

By

Abba Abubakar, son of former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar, has promised to deliver Adamawa, his father’s state, for President Bola Tinubu in the 2027 elections.

He spoke on Friday at the All Progressives Congress (APC) national secretariat in Abuja during the Haske Bola Tinubu Organisation (HBTO) unveiling and the launch of its subsidised public transportation support scheme.

Abubakar, HBTO founder, said his decision to back Tinubu is not an attempt to antagonise his father, the African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential candidate.

“I recognise that political decisions, particularly those that differ from the positions of individuals with whom one shares personal and family relationships, often attract considerable public attention,” he said.

“However, political conviction is a matter of personal judgment, conscience, and the freedom of every individual to make independent choices.

“My decision to establish and lead the HBTO is a deliberate political choice made with a firm belief in the direction we have chosen.”

He said democracy is strengthened when individuals can make independent political choices, engage in constructive dialogue, and support the leadership and political platforms they believe best represent their aspirations.

“It is within this spirit that HBTO was established,” he said.

He commended the economic reforms introduced by the Tinubu administration, citing the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND), national infrastructure investments, increased statutory allocations to state governments, and transport support schemes as some of the key social intervention programmes.

Asked whether he would ensure the president gets maximum votes in Adamawa, Abubakar said: “Yes, yes, yes. We are going to deliver Adamawa state.”

He, however, said his decision should not be seen as a betrayal of his family ties or his father’s political aspiration.

“I’ve always supported my father since I started acting in politics, and I supported him because of what he has done for the country,” he said.

“But I believe that whenever a government comes out with policies that will help the people, I will join them.

“It’s not just because it’s my father. I don’t think I am antagonising him; I simply believe in the current government’s policies and the reforms taking place.”

Abubakar joined the APC in January 2026, vowing to mobilise support for Tinubu’s re-election.
