Osun APC says it’s consulting with legal team over Adeleke’s victory

The Osun state chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has said it is reviewing the results of the 2026 governorship election across the state’s 332 wards.

Governor Ademola Adeleke was declared winner of the election by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on Sunday.

The Osun state returning officer for INEC, Joshua Ogunwole, said Adeleke secured 511,067 votes to defeat his closest challenger in the tightly contested governorship election.

Bola Oyebamiji of the All Progressives Congress (APC) came second with a final vote tally of 444,815 votes, while Najeem Salaam, the candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), came a distant third with 17,180 votes.

Reacting to the development in a statement, Kola Olabisi, spokesperson for APC in Osun, said the party would explore available legal avenues to  challenge the outcome of the poll at the election tribunal.

Olabisi said the party is consulting its legal team before deciding on the next step after the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) declared the election results.

He said that the election process does not end with the declaration of results, and the constitutional process allows aggrieved parties to seek redress at the election petition tribunal, the court of appeal, and ultimately the supreme court.

“An election cannot be said to have been concluded without having explored all these constitutionally allowed legal opportunities to correct anomalies observed in the process of the election as enshrined in the Electoral Act 2026 as amended,” the statement reads.

The spokesperson said the APC would not hesitate to explore the “window allowed by the extant Electoral Act” after consulting its lawyers and acting on their professional advice.

He explained that the development is part of the beauty of democracy.

“The new development is a beauty of democracy with reference to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC)’s declared governorship election results in the state which would not propel us to deviate from embracing the culture of the rule of law,” the statement reads.

“As a result of the foregoing, we are imploring our ever loyal members and supporters to remain cool and calm while they carry on with their businesses and refuse to respond to any provocative action or inaction from any of the members of the ruling party across the state.”

Olabisi maintained that INEC’s declaration of the governorship election results would not make the party abandon its commitment to the rule of law, fairness and justice.

He, however, commended members and supporters of the party for their “steadfastness, sagacity and loyalty” throughout the electoral process.

He pointed out that their contributions had helped the APC reach the current stage in the state’s political history.

He asked the Nigeria Police Force to protect its members and supporters, whom he alleged were being ‘needlessly molested” by the ruling party.

“While we are appealing to the Nigeria Police Force to come to the aid and rescue of our members and supporters who are being needlessly molested by the ruling party, we are assuring them that we won’t have any cause or reason to abandon them,” Olabisi said.

Nigeria’s inflation rate drops to 15.43 per cent

Nigeria’s headline inflation has dropped from 15.91 per cent in June 2026 to 15.43 per cent in July.

The report of the decline was contained in the latest consumer price index (CPI) report just released by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS).

According to the report, food inflation is sustaining the cost of living pressure on households.

NBS says, food inflation for the month of July accelerated to 5.56 per cent from 3 75 per cent recorded in June 2026. On year-on-year basis, it rose from 17.52 per cent in July 2025 to 20.31 per cent in July 2026.

This year alone food inflation has witnessed a consecutive six months of spike, rising from 8.89 per cent in January to 12.12 per cent in February, to 14.31 per cent in March and up further to 16.06 per cent in April.

In May, it jumped 16.96 per cent before reaching 17.52 per cent in June and in July, it hit 20.31 per cent.
The problem of food insecurity in Nigeria has remained a paradox.
Although the food available in the market, but the prices have continued to rise, raising the question of what exactly could be driving rising prices.

Stakeholders believe one of the major drivers of food prices in the country is high cost of transportation arising from the high cost of fuel.

Pump prices of petroleum products, especially premium motor spirit,(PMS), otherwise called fuel, has been rising since the removal of fuel subsidy in May 2023.

The situation was made worse by the crisis in the Middle East which drove up the global crude oil prices.

One striking and perhaps uncomfortable finding in the report is the enormous disparity between states.

While national headline inflation stood at 15.43 per cent, Adamawa recorded 33.03 per cent, more than twice the national rate.

Adamawa’s food inflation was even more alarming: 51.36 per cent year-on-year.

Katsina recorded food inflation of 30.84 per cent and Zamfara 30.65 per cent.

At the other end of the scale, Borno recorded negative 0.31 per cent food inflation, while Nasarawa recorded 6.88 per cent.
