Oando Plc Group Chief Executive , Jubril Adewale Tinubu, has paid an emotional tribute to his late friend and businessman, Herbert Wigwe, on what would have been Wigwe’s 60th birthday, reflecting on the friendship, ambition and bold business ideas they shared.

In a tribute shared on Saturday, Tinubu recalled the instinctive connection that defined their relationship, saying some friendships leave behind a lasting habit of reaching for the phone to exchange ideas, debate decisions or discuss ambitions.

“Some friendships leave behind an instinct that time does not erase,” Tinubu wrote.

He remembered Wigwe as a businessman with an exceptional eye for opportunity and a remarkable ability to navigate complex deals.

According to Tinubu, Wigwe possessed the courage to pursue ambitious ideas and was never afraid to look beyond familiar territory in search of new possibilities.

“Herbert had a remarkable eye for opportunity, exceptional acumen in deal-making and the courage to pursue bold ideas,” he said.

Tinubu said the late businessman understood that meaningful growth often required people to move beyond established boundaries and imagine possibilities that others might overlook.

The reflection also highlighted the shared ambition that brought the two friends together professionally and personally.

“We shared an ambition to build, the courage to venture beyond the familiar and a belief that extraordinary things are possible when people dare greatly together,” Tinubu said.

Wigwe, who was born on August 15, 1966, was the co-founder of Access Bank and later became Group Chief Executive Officer of Access Holdings.

He died on February 9, 2024, alongside his wife, Chizoba Wigwe, their son, Chizi, and former chairman of Nigerian Exchange Group, Abimbola Ogunbanjo, in a helicopter crash near Nipton, California, in the United States.

Wigwe’s death at the age of 57 prompted widespread tributes across Nigeria’s business, political and financial communities, with many remembering him for his role in expanding Access Bank and his broader investments in education, technology and entrepreneurship.

For Tinubu, however, the remembrance remains deeply personal.

“Time has not diminished it. I do not expect it ever will,” he wrote, referring to the bond and shared ambitions that continued to shape his memories of Wigwe.

“Thinking of you today, my friend,” Tinubu added. The tribute offers a poignant glimpse into the personal relationships behind Nigeria’s corporate landscape, while marking what would have been Wigwe’s 60th birthday with a reflection on a friendship that Tinubu says remains undiminished by time.

Nigeria’s inflation rate drops to 15.43 per cent

Nigeria’s headline inflation has dropped from 15.91 per cent in June 2026 to 15.43 per cent in July.

The report of the decline was contained in the latest consumer price index (CPI) report just released by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS).

According to the report, food inflation is sustaining the cost of living pressure on households.

NBS says, food inflation for the month of July accelerated to 5.56 per cent from 3 75 per cent recorded in June 2026. On year-on-year basis, it rose from 17.52 per cent in July 2025 to 20.31 per cent in July 2026.

This year alone food inflation has witnessed a consecutive six months of spike, rising from 8.89 per cent in January to 12.12 per cent in February, to 14.31 per cent in March and up further to 16.06 per cent in April.

In May, it jumped 16.96 per cent before reaching 17.52 per cent in June and in July, it hit 20.31 per cent.
The problem of food insecurity in Nigeria has remained a paradox.
Although the food available in the market, but the prices have continued to rise, raising the question of what exactly could be driving rising prices.

Stakeholders believe one of the major drivers of food prices in the country is high cost of transportation arising from the high cost of fuel.

Pump prices of petroleum products, especially premium motor spirit,(PMS), otherwise called fuel, has been rising since the removal of fuel subsidy in May 2023.

The situation was made worse by the crisis in the Middle East which drove up the global crude oil prices.

One striking and perhaps uncomfortable finding in the report is the enormous disparity between states.

While national headline inflation stood at 15.43 per cent, Adamawa recorded 33.03 per cent, more than twice the national rate.

Adamawa’s food inflation was even more alarming: 51.36 per cent year-on-year.

Katsina recorded food inflation of 30.84 per cent and Zamfara 30.65 per cent.

At the other end of the scale, Borno recorded negative 0.31 per cent food inflation, while Nasarawa recorded 6.88 per cent.
