Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo state has claimed that politicians aligning with a faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) backed by Nyesom Wike, minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), are supporting the re-election of President Bola Tinubu.
The governor spoke on Sunday during a closed-door meeting with Bala Mohammed, governor of Bauchi; and Seriake Dickson, senator representing Bayelsa West; at the Bauchi government house.
In February, the Wike faction of the party in Oyo asked the Kabiru Turaki-led national working committee (NWC) to pursue reconciliation.
Abdulrahman Akinoso, chairman of the faction’s caretaker committee, made the remarks while reacting to the high court judgment nullifying the party’s national convention held in the state on November 15, 2025.
Akinoso said the Turaki faction should stop “pursuing a futile legal battle”, noting that the Wike-backed PDP remains committed to unity and democratic principles.
On Saturday, Okezie Ikpeazu, former Abia governor, also underlined the need for genuine reconciliation as the PDP faction begins preparations for its 2026 national convention scheduled for March 29 and 30 in Abuja.
“What the PDP needs at this moment is honest reconciliation, rooted in truth, driven by sincerity and sustained by mutual respect,” Ikpeazu, who is chairman of the PDP 2026 convention committee, had said.
“We must have the courage to listen to one another, the humility to admit where we went wrong, and the strength to forgive, genuinely and completely.”
Speaking on the reconciliation admonition, Makinde said anyone engaging with Wike’s camp has effectively chosen to back Tinubu’s second term bid.
“I came into the public domain to say that I was in a meeting with Wike and Mr. President, and he promised to hold the PDP for Mr. President towards 2027,” Makinde said.
“So, anyone dealing with Wike and his group, in any guise, what it means is you have also agreed to support President Tinubu for 2027.
“We need Nigerians to judge. If you can be in their camp where they promised that they are supporting the president, so be it.
“We are not begrudging them. You can support whoever you like to support. But go to them if you want to support them. That is our position.
“They have the government behind them. They have the judiciary behind them. They have INEC behind them. But we have the people behind us.”
Responding, Bala Mohammed said the reconciliation move follows a court directive.
“Reconciliation is not something that we have called for. It is something that is being required as a solution by a competent court of jurisdiction — a very high court of appeal,” he said.
“We are law-abiding and we believe in the rule of law. That opinion by my brother is his opinion. But certainly, we believe that there are no irreconcilable issues in Nigeria, especially in the political or national space.”
