Good morning! Nigerian Newspapers Headlines: Iran names Khamenei’s son as new supreme leader

1. Iran’s ruling clerics on Sunday appointed the slain leader’s son, Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei, as the country’s new supreme leader, defying threats from the United States and Israel to oppose him.

Nine days after US-Israeli strikes killed the elder Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and plunged the Middle East into war, the clerical government’s Assembly of Experts convened to choose their next leader.

2. The  Chief of Army Staff (CoAS), Lt-Gen. Waidi Shuaibu, has denied reports that an officer and 39 soldiers were killed in the Boko Haram attacks on Ngoshe, Borno State, which claimed over 100 lives on Tuesday. Lt-Gen. Shuaibu made the clarification on Saturday during a one-day official visit to assess damage to lives, vehicles, and equipment at Maimalari Cantonment in Maiduguri


3. The Court of Appeal in Abuja will on Monday, today render its judgment in the nine consolidate appeals filed by the two factions of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) on the decisions of the Federal High Court in Abuja. Information about the planned judgment is contained in notices sent to the parties by the court’s registry.


4. The Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, has appointed Deputy Commissioner of Police, DCP Anthony Okon Placid, as the new Force Public Relations Officer. He takes over from Assistant Commissioner of Police, ACP, Benjamin Hundeyin. This was contained by the a statement issued on Sunday by the outgoing FPRO, Hundeyin.


5. Edo State Police Command has arrested a Nigerien national in Ubiaja, Esan South East Local Government Area, in connection with kidnapping activities. The Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO, Eno Ikoedem, said the arrest followed intensified operations ordered by the Commissioner of Police, Monday Agbonika, in response to rising reports of kidnappings across the state.


6. Actress and producer Fathia Williams is grieving the loss of her mother, Mrs. Gloria Uzoamaka Williams, who died on February 7, a day before the actress marked her 55th birthday. The family reportedly withheld the news of her mother’s passing until after the birthday celebration.

7. The Nigeria Police Force in Sokoto State has confirmed that one person was killed while five others were abducted during a bandit attack on Mallamawar Yari village in Gawakuke ward of Rabah Local Government Area. Also, suspected bandits abducted a housewife and her son during a late-evening attack on Ndeji village in the Edu Local Government Area of Kwara State.


8. The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA, has arrested a former two-term councilor at Ibeju-Lekki Local Government Council in Lagos State following credible intelligence linking him to illicit drug sales and trafficking. This is contained in a statement by the Director, Media and Advocacy, NDLEA, Mr Femi Babafemi on Sunday in Abuja.

9. All is set for the screening of Rivers State Governor Siminalaiyi Fubara’s nine commissioner-nominees  by the House of Assembly today .  Speaker Martins Amaewhule has asked them to appear before the Assembly. On March 3, the assembly disclosed that it received a list of nine nominees from the governor and invited the beneficiaries to send their credentials for screening

10. Troops of the Joint Task Force Operation Whirl Stroke (OPWS) have successfully foiled a kidnap attempt and rescued two victims in Gborgbor Village, Wukari Local Government Area of Taraba. Lt Ahmad Zubairu, Acting Media Information Officer, Headquarters OPWS, made the disclosure in a statement made available to newsmen on Sunday in Makurdi.
