Alex Ikwechegh, a member of the house of representatives, has apologised for assaulting Stephen Abuwatseya, a Bolt driver.

Ikwechegh, a member of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), made headlines for slapping and hurling insults at Abuwatseya.

In a viral video, Ikwechegh is seen in a heated exchange with the driver whom he accused of disrespect for asking him to approach the car to receive his package.

The incident occurred on October 27 in the Maitama district of Abuja.

The federal capital territory (FCT) police command had said Ikwechegh was in its custody for questioning.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, the lawmaker representing Aba north/south federal constituency of Abia state, said he regrets his actions.

“What began as a misunderstanding escalated into actions and remarks I deeply regret, which do not reflect the values and character I strive to uphold, both as a citizen and as a representative of the people,” the statement reads.

“I sincerely apologize for my words and actions during this incident. I recognize the distress and frustration this has caused Citizen Abuwatseya, his family, and the public at large.

“As a public servant, I understand the weight of my role and how my words can impact others.”

The lawmaker said he and Abuwatseya have “explored alternative dispute resolution methods to address this issue and have reached a respectful resolution, which I am committed to following through”.

The legislator also apologised to Kayode Egbetokun, the inspector-general of police, for the “unintended disparagement” his remarks may have caused to him.

“I reaffirm my respect for the Nigerian Police Force and the Inspector General’s commitment to maintaining law and order,” he said.

“Additionally, I extend my sincere apologies to the leadership and members of this House and the National Assembly as a whole for any deficit in goodwill this incident may have caused.

“I am aware that my actions reflect not only on myself but also on this esteemed institution and the trust that the public places in us.

“I sincerely apologize for any pain or discomfort my actions may have caused, and I am committed to learning from this experience to grow into a better citizen and a more empathetic representative of the people.

“This experience is particularly disheartening given my recent achievements in constituency engagement, including many interventions in health, agriculture, education, and economic empowerment for my people.

“It is a teachable moment not only for me but also for many in the political sphere, as we are held to higher standards of conduct and rhetoric, even under provocation.”

Ikwechegh added that he is committed to “using this as an opportunity for growth and as a call to be better, and do better”.

In a recent episode of Nollywood on Radio, the 46-year-old said their shared passion for the entertainment industry brought them together.

“One of the reasons I married him is that we’re both in the same industry,” she said.

Aigbe emphasised the benefits of partnering with Adeoti, adding, “Together, we are building a production empire. I just felt I needed someone in the industry to collaborate with.

“And it is a good thing that he understands it too. Combining our strengths, the future looks promising.”

In January 2022, Mercy unveiled Kazeem as her husband much to the surprise of many.

Shortly after the unveiling, the actress was in the public eye after Funsho Adeoti, Kazeem’s first wife, accused her of snatching her husband.

Cristel Nchama, one of the women featured in Baltasar Engonga‘s viral sex tapes, has filed a formal complaint with the National Gendarmerie of Malabo; the armed forces of Equatorial Guinea.

Engonga, Equatorial Guinea’s director-general of the National Financial Investigation Agency (ANIF), has been in the public eye after officials, who searched his home and office as part of an investigation into alleged fraud, uncovered about 400 explicit videos purportedly featuring him and multiple women.

Among the discoveries were tapes of Engonga seemingly having romps with his brother’s wife, his cousin, the sister of the president of Equatorial Guinea, the wife of the director general of police, and about 20 wives of ministers, among others.

The now-viral videos were filmed in his office, hotels, and toilets allegedly with the consent of the participants.

She claimed that Engonga “misled” her into trusting him and that she previously resisted being filmed, believing any recordings were deleted.

Cristel also demanded that Engonga pays for the damages caused to her “reputation and honour”.

“I am humiliated, it is my reputation, my honour, I want to know where these images came from and why he kept the images,” she said.

The embattled head of ANIF was sacked on Thursday.

The government also suspended all officials said to have had sexual relations in offices of ministries.

Equatorial Guinea sex tapes: Ebang Engonga remanded in prison

The former Director-General of the National Financial Investigation Agency in Equatorial Guinea, Baltasar Engonga, has been remanded in Malabo’s Black Beach Prison.

The embattled former anti-graft chief was arrested days ago for allegedly recording over 400 sex tapes involving the wives of prominent figures in the country.

This scandal surfaced during a fraud investigation into the 54-year-old economist, resulting in an impromptu search of his home and office by ANIF officials, who reportedly discovered several CDs that revealed his sexual encounters with different married women.

As the footage leaked online, causing a media uproar, Equatorial Guinea’s President, Obiang Nguema Mbasogo, dismissed Engonga.

According to Decree No. 118/2024, dated 4th November, the dismissal was due to “irregularities committed in the exercise of his functions, as well as inappropriate family and social conduct for the performance of public duties.”

A viral video surfaced on social media on Friday, showing Engonga handcuffed on both hands and legs during a court appearance.

Confirming the situation, French online blog Afrikmatin reported that Engonga, who was officially removed from his role on November 6, 2024, was subsequently chained and transferred to Malabo Central Prison. He faces charges of corruption and embezzlement.

Additionally, online newspaper UGStandard reported that the sex tapes began circulating on social networks while Engonga was already held at Malabo’s notorious Black Beach Prison on charges of embezzling public funds, as reported by state television, TVGE.

In a fact-checking report published Wednesday, Dubawa verified that Engonga had indeed been taken into custody on corruption charges and is currently being held in Black Beach Prison.
