FG bans single-use plastics in MDAs to tackle threat of climate change

Published

on

The Federal Government has placed a ban on single-use plastics in all ministries, departments, and agencies (MDAs) to address the growing issue of plastic pollution in the country.

Iziaq Salako, minister of state for environment, said the ban was approved on Tuesday during the federal executive council (FEC) meeting presided over by President Bola Tinubu.

The minister said the ban aligns with Tinubu’s administration’s broader plastic waste management strategy and demonstrates the government’s commitment to tackling the triple threat of climate change, biodiversity loss, and pollution.

He added that the ban is also in line with the 2022 national policy on plastic waste management.

Salako stressed the severity of plastic pollution in Nigeria, describing it as “a major issue in our country”.

He lamented that plastic waste often clogs drains and contributes to flooding, while also polluting the oceans and affecting human health and the environment.

He explained that the ban is part of the administration’s efforts to promote responsible plastic waste management by refusing, reducing, reusing, repurposing, and recycling.

Salako added that the ban serves as a leading example for the Nigerian populace to be environmentally responsible and use plastic waste judiciously.

“The federal ministry of environment proposed and the federal executive council approved the ban on the use of on-the-go plastics, what we know as single-use plastics, in all ministries, agencies, and departments of the federal governments,” the minister said.

“This is in line with the 2022 national policy on gas-to-waste management.

“We must say that the discussion in Exco was very smooth because all members of Exco, including Mr. President, were very enthusiastic about this ban.

“As you know, plastic is one of the key challenges that we face when we go to our drains. And when we talk about the issue of flooding, we find out that plastic waste is heavily criminalised.

“So for us to adequately and properly use all five principles of sustainability in terms of refusing, reducing, reusing, repurposing, and recycling, the council has approved that, with some framework being put in place, there will be no longer the use of single-use plastics in all ministries, departments, and agencies of governments.

“Of course, this is to serve as a leading by example to the Nigerian populace so that we know that we have to be environmentally responsible and use plastic waste very, very responsibly.”

Nigeria U-17 women football team, the Flamingos, have been crowned champions of the 2026 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup in Morocco.

The Nigerian team defeated Japan 2-1 in a thrilling final match played at the Stade de Marrakech on Saturday night, securing the country’s first-ever title in the history of the competition.

It is a monumental achievement for Nigerian football, as the Flamingos have now become the first African team to win the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup since its inception in 2008.

Nigeria had a fairytale run to the final, overcoming formidable opponents like Brazil in the semi-finals to set up the clash against the Japanese side.

Both teams started the game with high intensity, but it was the Flamingos who broke the deadlock in the first half. A well-orchestrated attack saw forward Awawu Bashiru calmly slot the ball into the net in the 39th minute to put Nigeria ahead.

Japan managed to pull one back in the 79th minute to reduce the deficit, but the goal proved to be a mere consolation as the Nigerian defense held firm until the final whistle.

Senate President Godswill Akpabio on Friday said President Bola Tinubu will secure more than two million votes in Akwa Ibom state in the 2027 elections.

Akpabio made the promise during the All Progressives Congress (APC) presidential rally in Uyo, the Akwa Ibom state capital.

He said more than two million registered voters in Akwa Ibom have collected their permanent voter cards (PVCs).

“We are united for progress; we are united in love for the president and for the APC,” Akpabio said.

“Let me make a quick correction, the DG of the campaign said we have 3.2 million registered voters, and he said about 1.8 million have collected their PVCs. Can I correct him? Over two million people have collected their PVCs.

“So, how many votes are we projecting for President Tinubu? Two million votes. And two million votes he will have.

“We don’t play tricks in Akwa Ibom, we deliver as it should be delivered. So, the DG of the campaign, my people are prepared to vote the president back to Aso Rock with over 2 million votes.
