Man Utd stun City to win FA Cup

Published

on

Erik ten Hag got his teenage kicks as two of Manchester United’s brightest young talents inspired their side to a surprise FA Cup final win over Manchester City on Saturday.

With pre-match reports indicating that Ten Hag, who could only guide his side to an eighth placed finish in the Premier League this season, will be sacked this summer regardless of the result at Wembley, United were an impressively organised outfit in the opening exchanges, and they took the lead after half an hour following a mix up between Stefan Ortega and Josko Gvardiol which allowed Alejandro Garnacho to score.

A superb team move led to Kobbie Mainoo slotting home a brilliant second before the break, with a sluggish City left punch-drunk. Erling Haaland hit the bar for Pep Guardiola’s side early in the second half, but United held firm until Jeremy Doku’s effort squirmed past Andre Onana in the 87th minute.

Roared on by their fans, United survived the remainder of normal time and seven minutes of stoppage time to secure an unlikely success and deny City the league and cup double a season on from their historic treble. Here are the game’s main talking points from a thrilling Wembley occasion.

The game quickly took on the type of pattern that we all thought it would, with City dominating possession and United happy to allow them to do just that, but then a curious thing happened. We all saw Manchester City not be very good at football.

Passes were going astray and a tone was set was a by a side which looked remarkably weary. Pep Guardiola would have wanted his side to exert control and dominance on this game without necessarily expanding too much energy, for they haven’t really got that much left after a gruelling season, but City were sucked into a disciplined United trap and they very quickly began to get down on themselves.

Ideas were scarce, arms were thrown into the air and a suited and booted Guardiola would have heard the alarm bells on the touchline.

Even though they had started poorly City would have thought that they would eventually wear United down, but with their first choice centre-back pairing playing behind a more mobile, cohesive midfield, United looked extremely organised, and it was that organisation which allowed them to gain a foothold in the game as they gained confidence.

There were a couple of occasions when they could have sprang in behind a wobbling, high City line, while their pressing from the front was on point too as Ortega looked hurried. Moments later the goalkeeper and Gvardiol got in their almighty mess, with Garnacho taking advantage, and while there was a large slice of fortune about the goal it was a reward for the disciplined approach United took against a side who probably expected that discipline to be absent.

Bruno Fernandes found Mainoo, who then found Marcus Rashford on the left. Rashford’s superb, raking pass picked out Garnacho, he found Fernandes on the edge of the box and the skipper, having already clocked where Mainoo was earlier in his run, superbly found the young midfielder without looking at him, and Mainoo finished expertly. Four footballers, 13 touches of the football, one magnificent goal.

It was a strike that deserves a special place in FA Cup and Manchester United folklore, with Mainoo capping his excellent season by becoming just the fourth teenager to score in a final, nine minutes after Garnacho had become the third. A reminder that for all United’s issues, a lack of exciting young players isn’t one of them.

Kevin De Bruyne is no stranger to leaving a final early. In the 2021 Champions League final he smashed into Chelsea’s Antonio Rudiger and ended up withdrawn in tears due to concussion protocols, while two years later he only made it to the 36th minute against Inter Milan before suffering a hamstring injury. He went off before the hour mark again here, but he just wasn’t very good.

The Belgian’s influence on this City side was clearly felt when he returned in such style for the second half of the season, but at 33 next month, and having been so vocal around player workload in recent years, you have to wonder just how much he’s got left in the tank.

City have seen a creative force step forward and become a main attacking weapon for them this season in the form of Phil Foden, although not here, and De Bruyne’s ongoing influence on their team is becoming rationed. It isn’t infinite though.

Whatever you think of him – and plenty of the things he comes out with don’t exactly help his cause – you can’t help but raise a smile and a glass for Ten Hag after this success.

It must never be very nice to be told that you’re going to lose your job on the eve of a day on the global stage, a day when many were confidently predicting that the Dutchman and his team would be embarrassed by their city neighbours.

Euro 2024: England off to winning start with victory over Serbia

Published

Jude Bellingham was the match winner as England came through a nervy opening match against Serbia at Euro 2024.

Bellingham gave England the lead in the 13th minute when he headed in Bukayo Saka’s deflected cross before Aleksandar Mitrovic fired a good chance wide. Kyle Walker failed to make the most of an opening on the break, but England went in at the break with a comfortable 1-0 lead.

That comfort disappeared in the second half, with England dropping deeper and Serbia growing in confidence. A few nervy moments came and went before substitute Jarrod Bowen crossed for Harry Kane, who struck the underside of the crossbar via a strong save from Predrag Rajkovic.

Jordan Pickford had to be on his toes to keep out a long-range effort from Dusan Vlahovic as an unconvincing England held on to claim three points in Group C. Here are the talking points from the match in Gelsenkirchen.

Speaking before kick-off, Cesc Fabregas compared Bellingham to Frank Lampard due to his uncanny ability to arrive in the box at the perfect moment. Lampard made a career out of those late runs which allowed him to charge onto cutbacks and crosses and chalk up a staggering goal tally from midfield.

Bellingham, as we are often reminded, is still only 20 years old but he already has that happy knack. He scored 23 goals in his debut campaign for Real Madrid and has been entrusted with the No10 role for his country already, his form so good that the Premier League player of the season, Phil Foden, has been shunted to the left.

England’s opening goal was a textbook example of the value of arriving at the right time, with Bellingham starting the move off by passing square to Kyle Walker before galloping into the area to nod in Saka’s deflected cross. He has been appointed the team’s talisman and this was a perfect start to the tournament for the nation’s great hope. Chants of “JUUUUUUUUDE” were frequent throughout the first half as he ran the show.

Harry Maguire has been a key player during Southgate’s reign as England boss and his absence from Euro 2024, due a calf injury, was an obvious problem that needed to be addressed. Marc Guehi only returned from a long-term injury for Crystal Palace in May following three months out but, like Bellingham, he timed his run perfectly.

Guehi has taken Maguire’s role alongside John Stones and, after a wobble in the first minute, there were no signs of nerves. The 23-year-old looked the part of a player being hyped for a £55million transfer this summer, with interest from Manchester United and Arsenal.

His best moment came after 33 minutes when Serbia swung a dangerous ball into the box for Aleksandar Mitrovic and Dusan Vlahovic to attack. Guehi took charge, rose highest and headed it clear.

He ended the first half with a flawless statistical record, having completed 32 of his 32 attempted passes and won both of his attempted aerial duels and his one tackle. “Literally everything he’s done, he’s done right,” said Joe Hart on the BBC at half-time. Central defence could be regarded as a weak spot for England, with Lewis Dunk and Ezri Konsa the other options, but Guehi’s performance will ease those concerns slightly.

England started impressively in Gelsenkirchen with Bellingham strutting his stuff and Saka and Declan Rice standing out. But their complete dominance of the ball didn’t last and old habits started creeping back into their play. By the time the middle of the second half arrived, it was Serbia who were on top and it was their fans who were most audible in the stands.

Having previously been brave on the ball and played their way out from the back, suddenly England were guilty of lumping the ball up in the general direction of Kane and Phil Foden. Unsurprisingly, the ball wasn’t sticking and Serbia had a new spring in their step; only a poor first touch and some misfortune from crosses prevented them from testing Jordan Pickford, with a nervy moment coming when England’s keeper leapt on a loose ball at Guehi’s feet. Later in the tournament, better teams are likely to make those moments count.

With their backs to the wall, England needed their goalkeeper to be alert – and Pickford did not disappoint. As they edged towards the final whistle, Vlahovic picked up a loose ball on the edge of the box and smashed an effort goalward. Thankfully, Pickford was deep in concentration and reacted to push the Juventus striker’s effort over the bar.

The end of this match wasn’t pretty – and there are many improvements that need to be made in possession – but at least their goalkeeper was on hand to maintain their clean sheet. The Everton keeper has been Southgate’s main man since 2018 and he continues to impress in the big occasions.

Mixed reactions trail Osimhen’s outburst against Finidi

Following Victor Osimhen’s outburst on social media, reactions from fans have been pouring in, with many criticizing the Napoli striker for his comments against Finidi George.

Finidi, who is said to have also resigned as the head coach of the Super Eagles on Saturday (although the NFF is yet to confirm), was quoted to have said he can’t beg Osimhen to play for the national team after the player withdrew from their last two 2026 World Cup qualifiers due to injury.

The striker was said to have been ruled out by a four-week injury and was replaced by Enugu Rangers defender, Kenneth Igboke.

But following the Super Eagles wobbling performances against South Africa and Benin Republic, the narrative of Osimhen’s absence changed as the online medium (not The PUNCH) reported that Finidi used Osimhen’s absence as a poser for the players’ bad attitude towards the national team when he and the Nigeria Football Federation chiefs met with the Sports Minister, John Enoh in Abuja on Wednesday.

Osimhen was apparently infuriated by the comments in a live Instagram video on Saturday said he had lost respect for Finidi and opened up on the circumstances that led to his withdrawal from the Super Eagles last two World Cup qualifiers, adding that Finidi was adequately briefed by him and his doctor.

Jason, using the handle @zieecity, dismissed Osimhen’s actions, stating, “Let him get out, who’s he? As a professional footballer you don’t release a live video swearing and saying nonsense. No player is bigger than the team.”

Kinq Kudos expressed his disapproval of Osimhen’s approach, saying, “I don’t like Finidi’s style of coaching but Osimhen is not supposed to handle this issue like this. He could have done this on a podcast or interview if he truly wants to address it.”

Ore Eva defended Osimhen, stating, “For years that Osimhen has been on the team, he’s never spoken against any coach. Finidi must have really been terrible.”

Iyke, with the username @drackfel, accused Osimhen of disrespect, commenting, “Osimhen feels he’s richer and bigger than Finidi so he has no right to be in charge of him. It wouldn’t happen if the coach was a white man. He wouldn’t make such comments publicly if one of his managers at Napoli did the same thing. Shame.”

Uchenna, with the username @RichDakvng, called out Osimhen’s disrespect, saying, “Anyone that doesn’t see disrespect in this speech is a big hypocrite! When Sancho called out his manager, they said Sancho is disrespectful.”

Uche Mark emphasized that players like Finidi caused Osimhen’s failure, “This is why Finidi did not succeed. Disrespect, just look at how he’s talking to someone old enough to be his dad. They’re calling you Osimhen, your head is swelling. Have you played up to half of what Finidi played? You’re my Edo brother but I don’t support you on this.”

Victor Osimhen has fired back at former Super Eagles coach Finidi George over his comments on his commitment towards this month’s crucial 2026 World Cup qualifiers.

Osimhen was injured for the games, but Finidi maintained the striker could still have managed to play the matches.

Osimhen reportedly twisted his ankle and was ruled out for four weeks.

The 25-year-old Napoli striker has now said he is now being attacked for the failure of the Super Eagles to win both matches.

Osimhen, who took to his to Instagram page, defended himself, stating, “I asked Finidi George to allow me to stay with the players in the camp, but Finidi asked me not to bother, that I should stay with my family.

“Now, after two bad games, everybody is blaming me. I know how many injuries I’ve played with for Nigeria and I played my heart out, but after two bad games, everybody is attacking me.”
