Good morning! Here Are Some Major News Headlines In The Newspapers Today: Imo police arrest hotel owner for torturing youth to death

1. Operatives of the Imo State Police Command have arrested the 38-year-old owner of Our Guest Hotel, Ibe Obasi, located in the Obowo Local Government Area of the state for allegedly torturing to death a youth in the area, Ebuka Udemba. A statement issued by the command’s spokesperson, Henry Okoye, on Sunday, stated that the incident happened on Saturday.

 

2. The Association of Bureaux De Change Operators of Nigeria has appealed to the Central Bank of Nigeria to adjust and lower its applicable exchange rate below the N1,251/$ it pegged for its members. ABCON National President, Aminu Gwadabe, stated this in a letter to the CBN Director, Trade & Exchange Department.

 

3. The Federal Government is to launch three new national identity cards in May this year and has a target of providing them for about 104 million citizens across the country. The three new national identity cards planned by the National Identity Management Commission include a bank-enabled National ID card, a social intervention card, and an optional ECOWAS National Biometric Identity Card.

4. The Federal Government has declared Tuesday, 9 and Wednesday! April 10, 2024 as a public holiday to mark Eid-el-Fitr celebration. The Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, made the declaration on behalf of the Federal Government.

 

5. The military has lost a Lieutenant during an ambush by terrorists along Buratai-Buni Gari Road in Borno State. Four soldiers were also injured in the encounter that occurred at about 9:35 am on April 4.

 

6. Gunmen killed two persons in Agaie Local Government Area of Niger State, and took away their personal effects. The bodies were found around Lapai Road, close to Mashina village on Saturday. The deceased are unknown.

 

7. Gunmen at the weekend attacked the Makurdi residence of the lawmaker representing Logo-Ukum -Katsina Ala in the House of Representatives, Solomon Wombo. It was gathered that about four gunmen stormed the house about 11:30 pm on April 6 by scaling the fence. While trying to cut through the barbed wire, the noise attracted the housekeeper who came out and was threatened if he made noise.

8. A large crowd welcomed “kidnap kingpin”, Hamisu Bala, better known as Wadume, to his hometown in Ibbi Taraba State, on Sunday. Wadume, who was arrested by men of the Intelligence Response Team of Inspector-General of Police, in 2019, was released from Kuje Prison in Abuja, on Friday, according to sources.

 

9. The Rivers State Police Command has warned politicians to seek a lawful means to address grievances rather than resort to verbal attacks that can stoke violence in the state. The warning comes on the heels of recent verbal attacks between Governor Similanayi Fubara and Nyesom Wike, his predecessor, who is now Minister of Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

 

10. Popular Nigerian comedian, Ayo Makun, popularly known as AY, and his wife, Mabel, have separated after 20 years of “friendship/marriage”. The comedian confirmed the development in a post on his Instagram page on Sunday. He said he had reached a stage where he could no longer entertain the public with “deep personal family issues.”

Successful military operations against bandits laudable… they must be sustained – Tinubu

President Bola Tinubu has commended the Nigerian Army for their successful counter-insurgency operations in the north-west.

 

In a statement on Saturday, Bayo Onanuga, special adviser on information and strategy to the President, quoted Tinubu as saying that the army should sustain their efforts to achieve lasting peace and security.

 

On Friday, troops of Operation Hadarin Daji (OPHD) killed Kachallah Buzu, a notorious bandit kingpin and several of his fighters, in Mayanchi village of Zamfara state.

 

On Wednesday, personnel of the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) thwarted a terrorist attack, killing at least 28 bandits in air strikes on Department of State Services facilities in Niger’s Shiroro LGA in Niger.

 

Tinubu asked security forces to maintain momentum while commending them for enhanced national security, urging persistence until all threats are eradicated completely and permanently.

 

“President Bola Tinubu receives with relief the news of the strings of successful operations against security threats in the north-west by troops of the Nigerian military,” the statement reads.

“He says the success of the operations gives further assurance that our security operatives are up to the task of ensuring the peace and security of the nation.

 

“Troops of Operation Hadarin Daji, on Thursday, neutralised a wanted bandit leader, Halilu Sububu, who had been unleashing terror on citizens in Zamfara, Sokoto, and other parts of north-western Nigeria. The troops also killed another terrorist Sani Wala Burki in a Joint Operation in Katsina, and busted a terrorist enclave in Kaduna, where 13 kidnapped students were freed.

 

“The successful operations follow the President’s directive to the service chiefs to relocate to the zone until normalcy is restored.”

 

The president lauded the military’s bravery, intelligence agencies’ expertise, and troops’ dedication, assuring them of his continued support to ensure the nation’s safety and security.

‘Five killed’ as APC guber candidate Okpebholo’s campaign convoy rams into car in Edo

Five people have reportedly died in an accident that involved the campaign convoy of Monday Okpebholo, governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), in Edo.

According to reports, the accident occurred on Thursday at Warrake road in Uzebba of Owan west LGA, Edo state.

 

It was learnt that one of the vehicles in Okpebholo’s campaign convoy hit a Toyota Camry conveying five persons, killing the occupants, including the driver.

 

The victims were said to be returning home after attending a burial ceremony.

The bodies of the deceased have been deposited at a mortuary in Edo State University, Uzaurie, in Etsako west LGA of the state.

One of the victims was identified as Emmanuel Edionwe.

 

It was gathered that a relative of Edionwe, who did not want to be named, said the family is devastated about the news of their son.

“We just learnt that five of them have died after the collision with Okpebholo’s convoy. There is just one of them who is in critical condition and is now being nursed to life at the hospital,” the family member said.

“We are devastated beyond words. Emmanuel was a good, easy-going boy who should not have died.”

 

A source said the lone survivor of the accident is in critical condition at the Irrua Specialist Hospital., adding that a delegation of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the state will pay the families of the victims a condolence visit today.
