Good Morning! Here Are Some Major News Headlines In The Newspapers Today: Appeal Court sacks 11 PDP lawmakers in Plateau

1. The Court of Appeal sitting in Abuja, on Friday, sacked 11 Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) lawmakers in the Plateau State House of Assembly. In a unanimous decision, the panel led by Justice Okon Abang, held that all the sacked lawmakers scored wasted votes at the time of the March 2023 general election because their party lacked structure.

2. Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, Ezenwo Nyesom Wike, on Friday, dismissed speculations that he could revive his presidential ambition in 2027, saying as a man who abhors disloyalty, he cannot contest against his boss, President Bola Tinubu. Wike noted that he remained committed to the successes of the Tinubu administration.

3. Chimobi Ezenwa, a Lagos resident whose mansion said to be worth N300 million was demolished, says he is now homeless. The administration of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu recently commenced the destruction of houses said to be in contravention of Lagos master plan.

4. Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, on Friday, lampooned Governor Siminalayi Fubara of Rivers State, describing him as an ingrate. Wike, the immediate past governor of Rivers, waded into his strained relationship with Fubara while speaking to select journalists in Abuja, on Friday.

5. There was tension in Kano city on Friday as supporters of the ruling New Nigeria People’s Party and the All Progressives Congress vowed to go ahead with their planned protests today (Saturday) in defiance of warnings by the state police command.

6. The months-long political crisis in Ondo State may have come to a halt as President Bola Tinubu late Friday waded into the matter and elicited resolve from the opposing factions to embrace peace and maintain status quo. This was as the Deputy Governor, Mr Lucky Aiyedatiwa, pledged to carry all commissioners and officials along in handling the state’s affairs.

7. Gunmen have assassinated the ward chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party in Ife/Akpodim/Chokoneze ward in Ezinihitte Mbaise Local Government Area of Imo State, Chiedoziem Anyanwu. It was gathered that Anyanwu was shot dead on Thursday by gunmen who rode on a motorcycle. According to a source, on arrival at his house, his killers mentioned his name and requested to see him.

8. Governor of Kogi State, Yahaya Bello, on Friday, promised not to interfere in the administration of the state governor-elect, Usman Ododo. Bello told State House correspondents when Ododo and the Imo State Governor, Hope Uzodimma, presented their certificates of return to President Bola Tinubu at the Aso Rock Villa, Abuja, that Ododo will be left to carry his own cross.

9. President Bola Tinubu, on Friday, advised governors elected on the platform of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) to always put the interest of the people first and work for the good of their states. He gave the advice when he received the Governor of Kogi State, Yahaya Bello, the returning Governor of Imo State, Hope Uzodinma, and the Governor-elect of Kogi State, Ahmed Usman Ododo, at the State House, Abuja.

10. The Court of Appeal in Abuja has upheld the March 18 election of Nasir Idris as the lawfully elected governor of Kebbi State. A three-member panel on Friday held that the appeal by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and its governorship candidate, General Aminu Bande lacked merit.

Obasanjo meets Babangida, Aliyu Gusau in Minna

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has arrived in Minna, Niger’s capital, to meet with Ibrahim Babangida, the ex-head of state.

Obasanjo arrived in Minna Sunday evening after felicitating Gabriel Igbinedion, the Esama of Benin Kingdom, in Edo State, over his 90th birthday.

The meeting with Babangida also had Abdulsalami Abubakar, former head of state, and Aliyu Gusau, an ex-national security adviser (NSA), in attendance.

Kehinde Akinyemi, media aide to Obasanjo, confirmed the meeting.

It was not immediately clear what issues were discussed by the former Nigerian leaders, but multiple reports said the meeting was connected with pressing national issues that border on the current economic challenges.

However, Akinyemi said Obasanjo visited the former head of state to also celebrate his birthday.

Babangida turned 83 in August.

Akinyemi said Obasanjo was unable to be present during Babangida’s birthday due to his busy schedule.

“The opportunity came yesterday, hence the visits to both Benin and Minna,” he said.

Akinyemi said Obasanjo noted Babangida’s contributions to Nigeria and celebrated his good health.

Edo Election: Quasi-security outfits not allowed – IGP

With days to the September 21 Governorship Election in Edo State, the Inspector General of Police (IGP) Kayode Egbetokun says quasi-security outfits won’t be allowed to intervene in election security in the South-South state.

He stated this Sunday during the Edo Election Security Townhall, a programme organised by Channels Television in partnership with the Kimpact Development Initiative and the UK International Development.

Egbetokun said, “We will be impartial, we will be professional, and we will be vigilant whilst providing a level playing ground for all the political parties and their candidates.

“Quasi-security organisations would not be allowed to take part in this election. They will not be allowed to intervene in the election security. Just as we have done in previous elections, only the police and other security agencies will be lawfully deployed for this exercise.

“For those who may be thinking of using violence to disrupt the election, I have a warning for them. Any person or persons found bearing any offensive weapon on the day of election will be treated instantly as an armed criminal.”

Egbetokun assured citizens of the state of “peaceful outcomes”.

With the IGP’s comment, the Edo State Security Network and other state-run and private-run outfits are banned from election security next Saturday.

The political temperature in the state has been turbocharged in the last year. Of note, 95 cases of violence including 35 incidents of electoral violence have been recorded since January this year in the state. Last week, the Peoples Democratic Party declined to sign a peace pact signed by 16 other parties fielding candidates in the poll.

Analysts have described the forthcoming poll as a three-horse race involving Asue Ighodalo of the People Democratic Party (PDP), Monday Okpebholo of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and Olumide Akpata of the Labour Party (LP).

Akpata is a former president of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA); while Ighodalo, former Chairman of the Nigerian Economic Summit Group (NESG); secured the endorsement of the incumbent governor, Godwin Obaseki, who shunned his deputy and party man, Philip Shaibu. Shaibu and former governor Adams Oshiomhole have pledged their support for Okpebholo.

Over 2.6 million registered voters from 18 local government areas are to decide the next governor of the South-South state.

Edo is one of the eight states where governorship elections are held off-season due to litigations and court judgements. Others are Anambra, Bayelsa, Ekiti, Imo, Kogi, Osun and Ondo.

BREAKING: 281 inmates missing from custodial centre after Maiduguri flood – NCoS

The Nigerian Correctional Service has declared 281 inmates missing from the Medium Security Custodial Centre, Maiduguri, the Borno State capital.

The service noted that this followed an evacuation process in the aftermath of the flood incident in the state, as seven inmates were returned to the centre.

 

In a statement on Sunday in Abuja by its spokesman, Umar Abubakar, the service released the details of the inmates, including their biometrics.

Abubakar said, “The Nigerian Correctional Service has observed the flooding currently being experienced in Maiduguri, Borno State, and its environment.

“The unfortunate incident has left scars, bringing down the walls of the correctional facilities, including the Medium Security Custodial Centre, Maiduguri (MSCC), as well as the staff quarters in the City.

 

“Upon the evacuation of inmates by officers of the service with support from sister security agencies to a safe and secure facility, 281 inmates were observed to be missing.”

He, however, added that “it is important to note that the service is in custody of their details, including their biometrics, which is being made available to the public below.

 

“The service is working in synergy with other security agencies as both covert and overt deployments have been activated to look out for them.

 

“Presently, a total of seven inmates have been recaptured and returned to custody, while efforts are on ground to track down the rest and bring them back to safe custody.”

 

“While this effort is on, the public is assured that the incidence does not impede or affect public safety.”
