Fix Nigeria first before meddling in Niger Republic affairs, LP tells Tinubu

Published

on

The Labour Party (LP) has asked President Bola Tinubu to fix Nigeria first before “meddling” in the affairs of the Niger Republic.

Recall that Amadou Abdramane, a colonel-major, in Niger Republic announced the removal of President Mohamed Bazoum from office in July.

Abdramane dissolved the West African country’s constitution, suspended all institutions and closed the borders.

On Thursday, the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), during its second extraordinary meeting, directed the deployment of standby military troops to restore constitutional order in the Niger Republic.

Tinubu is the chairman of ECOWAS.

Reacting to the development in a statement on Saturday, Obiora Ifoh, LP national publicity secretary, said now is not the time for Nigeria to be involved in a war because “the socio-economic situation in the country has so badly deteriorated to the extent that Nigeria is wallowing in abject poverty, hunger, and unemployment”.

“The leadership of the Labour Party has been following the recent political development in the Republic of Niger, and how Nigeria-led ECOWAS has threatened to lead the regional nations into a war of purging the coupists out of government from our neighboring country,” Ifoh said.

“We believe sincerely that charity should always begin at home. The holy book also said that one needs to remove the log on one’s eyes before talking about a spec on another’s eyes.

“The poor economic policies of the government, the hike in the prices of petroleum products, and the soaring forex situation have further deteriorated the living conditions of the people.

“So, with a country with such an enormous crisis, thinking of waging war against another country or defending democracy is not only laughable but misconceived and misdirected.

“We already have enough crises on our hands, from insecurity, hunger, unemployment, poverty, and poor infrastructure amongst others, I think the government has enough tasks to focus on rather than footloose into the internal affairs of another country.

“Nigeria cannot be playing the big brother of Africa when the people are hungry. We are giant of Africa only in name but we are far from living up to that expectation. The government needs to think about Nigeria first. We have enormous challenges on our hands.

“The government must focus on how to restore our economy, rebuild infrastructure, create jobs, and end killings and insecurity in Nigeria rather than waste time, resources, and energy in the affairs of another sovereign nation.”

Troops of Operation Hadin Kai of the Nigerian Army have killed more than 25 Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) terrorists who launched a “coordinated multi-directional assault” in Kukawa, Borno state.

Mohammed Goni, acting military information officer at the headquarters of the joint task force (north-east) Operation Hadin Kai, in a statement issued on Wednesday,   said some soldiers also paid the supreme price during the encounter.

“The terrorists, who attacked troops of 101 Special Forces Battalion in large numbers from four different flanks, met stiff resistance as the troops responded decisively with superior firepower, tactical manoeuvre and effective battlefield coordination,” the statement reads.

“Supported by the Air Component, the troops overwhelmed the terrorists, inflicted heavy casualties and forced the surviving elements to flee in disarray.

“Preliminary assessment indicates that over 25 terrorists were neutralised, with 14 bodies recovered so far.

“During exploitation of the area, troops recovered a cache of arms and ammunition, including six AK-47 rifles.

They didn’t call me fake when I campaigned for Obi, Archbishop hits back at critics over Tinubu endorsement

The president-general of the Charismatic Bishops Conference of Nigeria (CBCN), Archbishop Leonard Kawas, has hit back at his critics by defending his support for President Bola Tinubu’s re-election bid, saying his involvement in Nigerian politics predates the current administration.

The Archbishop’s defence follows criticism of the group’s endorsement of Tinubu, with some Nigerians questioning his credentials as a bishop.

But speaking during an interview on Arise TV, Archbishop Kawas said he had spent 25 years in the clergy and supported political leaders in the past, including Olusegun Obasanjo, Goodluck Jonathan, Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi, without being labelled a fake bishop.

“I travelled around this country with Doyin Okupe. I travelled around this country at 2 am with John Dara and others. We were campaigning from church to church, and nobody called me a fake bishop,” he said.

“I campaigned for my leader, reverend Jolly Nyame, and he became governor of my state, Taraba state. He appointed me chairman of the Christian Welfare Board, and nobody called me fake then.

“I supported Peter Obi at the initial stage of his presidential ambition. I went with him everywhere in Nigeria. And he never gave me one dollar, one naira.

“Neither did he even ever ask me one day how I came to the campaign. He will just see me at the campaign, and we will pray for him. I paid for the transportation of six clergymen. And nobody called me fake. We were on television everywhere.”

Kawas said he supported Jonathan since his time as deputy governor of Bayelsa state and later joined in his presidential campaign.

“I was one of the people who prophesied that we would see him in Abuja. And he came to Abuja, and he became vice-president and then president from the doctrine of necessity,” Kawas said.

“And then he won the election. I was on his presidential campaign council. I was the only bishop in Goodluck Jonathan’s presidential campaign council, and I took the campaign everywhere. Nobody called me fake.
