Reverse no work no pay plans on medical workers, NMA tells FG

The Nigeria Medical Association, FCT Chapter (NMA-FCT), has asked the Federal Government to reconsider its plans of “No work no pay” on medical workers, saying the act will further destroy the sector.

The call by the association was made in collaboration with the Nasarawa and Kogi states chapters, at a news conference on Sunday in Abuja, to usher in the 2023 Annual General Meeting (AGM), and Scientific conference of the NMA-FCT.

Dr Charles Ugwuanyi, the Chairman of NMA-FCT, condemned the proposed idea by the Federal Government, which took decision following the ongoing strike by the National Association of Residents Doctors (NARD).

According to Ugwuanyi, if the government goes on with the plan, it will further encourage the perceived healthcare challenge of dearth of doctors, where most of them have already moved out of the country.

He said that what NARD was only demanding for its rights, aimed at encouraging the doctors who were willing to continue to work for the country to stay.

According to him, at the moment, Nigeria has less than 25, 000 registered practising doctors, stressing that government must find a way to encourage doctors to stay in the country.

The NMA-FCT Chairman also called on governments at different levels to take the safety of workers seriously.

The association commiserated with the Lagos State Government over the demise of a young female doctor, Dr Vwaere Diaso, who died in a lift as a result of mechanical failure.
“The reason why most of us are dressed in black is not far fetched, we are in solidarity with our brothers and sisters in the NMA Lagos State Branch.

“As you are aware in the last one week, the media space is filled the news of a sad development, a young doctor, a house officer on duty, was trapped in a lift and she collapsed and died.

“We are all in mourning, while we pray for the repose of her soul and the souls of all the faithful departed, we want to send a message out there.

“We at the NMA we are indeed not happy with the poor working conditions, which on this occasion has resulted in the death of this young star with a very bright future.

“We are calling on the relevant authorities, government at different levels managing the different hospitals, to take safety in the working environment seriously.

“We enjoin all our members across the country, to take this message to the different levels of government,” he stressed.

Dr Peter Attah, Chairman, Committee of State Chairmen of NMA, also frowned at the proposed no work no pay, saying such an approach would not yield any good, but would rather crumble the healthcare service delivery.

Jailed Osun monarch drags Adeleke to court over plan to replace him

Dethroned Oba Joseph Oloyede, Apetumodu of Ipetumodu in Osun State, who is presently serving jail time in the United States of America for offences bordering on fraud, has dragged the Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke, before the court, asking it to stop him from filling the stool.

Oloyede, who is the second claimant in suit no. HIF/50/2026, in his motion on notice filed before an Osun State High Court sitting in Ile-Ife, alleged that Adeleke did not formally inform him of any infraction he committed before embarking on the process to replace him.

He is seeking an order of the court stopping the governor or any of his officials from filling the stool of Apetumodu until the substantive suit was determined.

Other claimants in the matter include Prince Oyewusi Adewusi, Prince Isaac Adewuni, and Prince Abiodun Oyetoro, for themselves and on behalf of other members of the Latimogun Royal Family of the Aribile Ruling House of Ipetumodu.

Aside from Adeleke, other defendants in the matter are the Osun State Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Chief Afolabi Adedeji, the Asalu of Ipetumodu and the head of the kingmakers, Chief Adesoye Babalola, the Malefon of Ipetumodu, and the Ife North Local Government.

The motion on notice filed by Oloyede, dated September 16, 2026, partly read, “An order of interlocutory injunction restraining the defendants/respondents either by themselves or through their servants, agents or privies from taking any step to fill the stool of the Apetu (Apetumodu) of Ipetumodu or appoint any person in place of the 2nd claimant who is the occupant of the Apetu’s stool, pending the hearing and final determination of this suit.

“That in The Guardian Newspaper of May 11, 2026 (online edition), it was alleged that the 2nd claimant/applicant has, by order/instrument purportedly signed by the 1st defendant on May 7, 2026, been deposed from office as the Apetumodu of Ipetumodu without any lawful basis.

“That there was no time the 2nd claimant/applicant was informed by the 1st-3rd defendants of any wrongdoing before the issuance of the publication contained in the said Guardian Newspaper and the purported instrument or order of deposition.”

The hearing in the matter was, however, stalled on Monday, following non-service of hearing notices on the parties in the case.

During the day’s proceedings, only the claimants’ counsel, O. Ogbewe, and counsel for the 5th defendant, Soji Oyetayo, entered appearances.

Addressing the court, Ogbewe said he had served the defendants with the processes regarding the case.

But Oyetayo, counsel for the 5th respondent, Adesoye Babalola, said hearing notice had not been served on him by the claimants.

Oyetayo subsequently urged the court to adjourn the matter for the claimants to serve all the defendants’ hearing notices.

In his ruling, Justice Dapo Adeniji adjourned the case to January 21, 2027, and ordered that fresh hearing notices be issued and served on the defendants.
