This year’s rainy season is here and casualties are already being recorded as predicted by the Nigerian Meterological Agency.

Already, a heavy downpour have left four people dead in Trademoore Estate in Lugbe district in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), while six vehicles were swept away in the resulting flood that left roads and farmlands submerged.

The Director-General of Federal Capital Territory Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) Abbas Idris confirmed the incident.

A resident, John Onale, said, “This is sad. We thought we were not going to experience any flood this year considering what has been put in place by the government. We are worried. FCT administration should come to our rescue.”

Idriss confirmed that four people died and 26 vehicles including an articulated towing van swept away by the flood, adding that 166 houses were affected.

Some other parts of the FCT, such as Light Gold Estate and Wisdom Estate were also affected by the flood.

Idriss said: “Following long hours of heavy rainfall on Sunday, Trademoore, Light Gold, Wisdom Estates and Lugbe communities of the Federal Capital Territory were heavily flooded- resulting in loss of lives and much property affected in and around the Estates.

“I want to appeal to all residents of the Federal Capital Territory especially developers to desist from violating the approved building codes in the Federal Capital Territory. We are also appealing to them to stop erecting retention walls to protect storm water from flowing. By doing so they are causing more havoc to the community.”
