Rainbow Coalition: You have nothing to fear, Wike tells APC governors

Published

on

Nyesom Wike, minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), has said that the Rainbow Coalition backing President Bola Tinubu’s re-election is not to a threat to the All Progressives Congress (APC), insisting that the initiative is designed to mobilise support across party lines.

Wike made the clarification during a live media parley in Abuja on Tuesday, saying that the coalition was not meant to weaken the ruling party but to unite APC members and supporters of the President from other political parties ahead of the 2027 general election.

The minister, who coordinates the coalition’s activities in Rivers State and the FCT, said the arrangement was designed to accommodate each state’s political peculiarities while pursuing a common objective.

He explained that the coalition’s reference to PBT/APC reflected the collaboration between APC members and non-members supporting Tinubu’s second-term ambition.

“If you see that word, PBT/APC, it means those who are supporting the president who are not members of the party, together with the party, are working together to achieve that purpose,” he said.

Wike maintained that the APC remained the platform through which Tinubu would seek re-election, adding that the coalition gave supporters outside the party a way to contribute to the President’s electoral campaign.

“The major thing is Mr President. Whatever we do, anyone with an idea or anything to contribute is contributing to Mr President’s success. That is the whole thing,” he said.

Wike, a former Rivers State governor, dismissed concerns that the coalition could unsettle APC governors or trigger divisions within the ruling party.

“I don’t know what concerns there are. As far as I am concerned, there is no problem,” he said.

Hr cited the FCT as an example of how the broader arrangement could accommodate political interests.

He recalled appealing to political stakeholders in the territory to support Tinubu and APC candidates for the National Assembly while allowing supporters of other parties to make their choices at other levels.

He said political circumstances differ from state to state, so flexibility is necessary to build a broad-based coalition.

The minister said political leadership required the ability to persuade people with different affiliations to work towards a common objective.

Arguing that supporting a presidential candidate did not require supporters to abandon their political parties, insisting that cross-party cooperation was not new to Nigerian politics, Wike added that the current political environment had made such cooperation more visible and organised.

He said the coalition’s central objective was to secure Tinubu’s re-election, urging Nigerians to assess the President’s performance on its merits rather than allow party affiliations to dictate their positions.

‘Delusion of grandeur’ — Shettima calls Peter Obi master of bogus statistics

Vice President Kashim Shettima has knocked former Anambra State Governor, Peter Obi, describing him as “the master of bogus statistics and incoherent economic prescriptions”.

Shettima made the remark on Wednesday at the inauguration of the All Progressives Congress Presidential Campaign Council at the State House Banquet Hall, Presidential Villa, Abuja.

Calling Obi “my very good friend”, the Vice President mocked his habit of comparing Nigeria with other countries, especially Bangladesh.

Shettima stated. “He seems convinced that a size 36 shirt tailored for Bangladesh will somehow fit Nigeria’s size 52 frame.”

He said Obi’s “fascination with foreign comparisons overlooks the peculiarities that distinguish one nation from another”.

According to Shettima, “Governance is an art that demands mastery of context, whether social, economic, political or institutional.

“What succeeds in Bangladesh cannot simply be transplanted to Nigeria without accounting for the differences in our population, economic structures, institutions and national circumstances.

“A country of over 250 million people cannot be governed through borrowed statistics and economic prescriptions detached from its peculiarities.”

The VP said he respected Obi but accused him of making a “bogus claim” about winning the 2023 presidential election without evidence to support the assertion.

“This is called delusion of grandeur.
Our contest is with the politics of yesterday dressed as tomorrow’s deliverance,” he said.

Obi has frequently cited Bangladesh in his criticism of the Tinubu administration’s economic management, including its borrowing.

In February, he said Nigeria’s challenge was fund mismanagement, not borrowing.

Obi ran as the Labour Party candidate in 2023 and finished third behind Tinubu and Atiku Abubakar.

He challenged Tinubu’s victory in court, and the Supreme Court dismissed his appeal and affirmed Tinubu’s election in October 2023.

Obi is seeking the presidency again in the election on January 16, 2027, on the platform of the Nigeria Democratic Congress.

El-Rufai’s associates earmarked $600,000 to compromise EFCC probe, DSS witness tells court

A forensic investigator with the Department of State Services (DSS), Segun Kayode, has told a Kaduna state high court, sitting in Kawoa, that Nasir el-Rufai, former Kaduna state governor, and some of his associates earmarked $600,000 to pay officials of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and intermediaries.

Kayode, who is the first prosecution witness in the ongoing trial, made the allegation on Tuesday while testifying before the court presided over by Justice Darius Khobo.

According to the witness, $500,000 and $100,000 were allegedly set aside for the payments, adding that forensic audio recordings captured conversations involving el-Rufai and some of his suspected associates.

According to Kayode, the recorded conversations centred on alleged efforts to frustrate an EFCC investigation into a company identified as Singularity.

He said a senior advocate of Nigeria (SAN), another individual and Bashir el-Rufai, were among those allegedly mentioned in the conversations.

Kayode told the court that the SAN and the other individual were allegedly directed to meet one Ahmadu Sule to obtain a template previously used to liquidate another company, with the intention of applying a similar process to Singularity.

The investigator further alleged that the discussions included plans to liquidate the company in Nigeria and Mauritius, where it was reportedly under investigation by the Nigerian Financial Intelligence Unit.

He also alleged that the recordings contained discussions about preventing the EFCC from investigating a company he said was listed on the New York Stock Exchange.

The allegations formed part of the prosecution’s evidence against the former governor and have yet to be established by the court.

Proceedings lasted nearly eight hours, from 12:26pm to 8:18pm, with about two hours devoted to playing the recorded conversations.

After Kayode submitted a hard copy of his findings to the court clerk, the defence objected, saying the document should have been served earlier to allow the legal team to study its contents.

The judge ruled that the defence could obtain a certified true copy of the document admitted as Exhibit One for examination.

The court adjourned the case until November 30 and December 1, 2026, for the continuation of cross-examination, following agreement by the prosecution and defence.

Ex-mafia boss Keffe D jailed 40 years for Tupac’s murder

Duane “Keffe D” Davis, the former gang leader convicted of orchestrating the 1996 murder of rap icon Tupac Shakur, has been sentenced to at least 40 years in prison.

Davis, 63, was found guilty by a jury in September of one count of murder with a deadly weapon for Shakur’s death.

Tupac was killed on September 7, 1996, after suffering a gunshot wound from a drive-by shooting. The rapper died six days after being put on life support. He was in Las Vegas for a Mike Tyson heavyweight fight.

Davis, one-time leader of the South Side Compton Crips, was arrested in September 2024. His trial began in August in a Las Vegas court — 30 years after the fatal shooting and a week after jury selection.

At the start of the hearing, Davis pleaded not guilty to a murder charge involving the use of a deadly weapon in connection with gang activity.

The jurors then deliberated for about three hours, after which they found Davis guilty of murder with the use of a deadly weapon with the intent to promote, further or assist a criminal gang.

In their verdict, the twelve jurors agreed that Davis was guilty of orchestrating the murder of Tupac.

“Count one, murder with use of a deadly weapon, guilty of first-degree murder with use of a deadly weapon,” the foreperson of the jury announced to the court.

When Carli Kierny, the presiding judge, asked Davis if he had anything to say on Tuesday, he replied: “I’m good. I’m gonna appeal this case for sure”.

Before handing down the sentence, Kierny told him: “You don’t get to take a man from his family.

“You don’t get to take his very life, his whole future from him, and just walk away from it. Especially when that man is Tupac Shakur. The world never forgot about him and his death.”
