‘Relegation is a possibility!’ – Ruben Amorim makes shocking admission as Newcastle condemn Man Utd to 2-0 defeat

Published

on

Ruben Amorim has warned that Manchester United are in danger of relegation unless things improve after losing a third consecutive Premier League game.

Newcastle beat Manchester United in a league game at Old Trafford for only the second time since 1972 to condemn their hosts to a third straight home loss in all competitions for the first time in more than 60 years.

Not since Sir Matt Busby’s days in the 1962-63 season have Manchester United lost three home games in a row in all competitions.

But early goals from Alexander Isak and Joelinton gave Eddie Howe’s men a thoroughly deserved victory that left them fifth in an impressive end to 2024.

Newcastle have won their last four Premier League games, with the excellent Isak taking his tally to 12 and his recent strike rate to eight in six games, with six in successive games.

In contrast, the home side were abysmal.

Head coach Ruben Amorim replaced forward Joshua Zirkzee with Kobbie Mainoo in the 33rd minute, confirmation that he had got a starting line-up that paired veterans Casemiro and Christian Eriksen together in midfield hopelessly wrong.

Marcus Rashford was brought back onto the substitutes bench, but despite watching his side slide to a fourth successive defeat in all competitions and fail to score for the third game on the trot, Amorim opted against introducing the England man into the fray.

United end the year in 14th place, seven points above the relegation zone. What was once was humorous jibing about a fight to avoid the drop is now a little too close to comfort – and league leaders Liverpool lie in wait at Anfield on Sunday.

Newcastle didn’t need to come up with anything radical to seize control of the match.

In an age of analysts, throw-in coaches and fitness gurus, a TV set with an ability to record would have been enough.

Manchester United’s deficiencies in defending set-pieces have been highlighted in every post-match inquest since Nottingham Forest came to this stadium on 7 December and scored after two minutes with a corner dropped to the near post at edge of the six-yard area. That came in the immediate aftermath of Amorim’s team conceding twice in the same manner at Arsenal.

Manchester United have conceded twice in three games direct from corners. So, when Bruno Guimaraes found Lewis Hall in space down the left, a cross was the obvious option. When Anthony Gordon cut back in a roughly similar position quarter of an hour later, he did the same thing.

On the first occasion, five home defenders were in a line. Yet Isak still got a free header to score. On the second, Joelinton outmuscled Lisandro Martinez as he jumped and the outcome was the same as Newcastle celebrated their good fortune.

It was 2-0 by the 19th minute and could have been more. Isak raced through after being left unattended by the touchline, but chipped a weak chip straight at Andre Onana. Gordon curled an effort over from the edge of the area and Joelinton blasted over after Gordon had skinned Noussair Mazraoui by the touchline.

In addition, Kieran Tripper tried to exploit United’s glaring weakness by going for goal direct from a corner, which had Onana scrambling to punch away at his near post.

For Newcastle, with a Champions League place to fight for and a Carabao Cup semi-final next week against Arsenal – and prospect of a first trophy since 1969 – the rest of the contest was about containment.

Tinubu orders comprehensive reform of Nigerian football after resignation of NFF board

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has ordered a comprehensive reform of Nigerian football to ensure the national football team overcome repeated failures to qualify for major regional, continental and world tournaments.

“The reform must respond to a longstanding need to strengthen governance, administration, stakeholder representation, development pathways, domestic competitions and accountability across Nigerian football,” he said.

Tinubu, according to a statement on Thursday by Bayo Onanuga, the presidential spokesperson, made the decision to help the country “overcome repeated failures to qualify for major regional, continental and world tournaments”.

“Football, Nigeria’s most popular sport and the greatest beneficiary of public support, investment and national attention, has continued to struggle basically due to structural deficits within the system,” the president said.

The President noted that while other sports had recorded meaningful progress since the reset of the sports sector under the re-established National Sports Commission, football has continued to struggle because of structural weaknesses within the system.

He stressed that Nigerian football must begin to match the country’s exceptional talent, passion and resources with stronger institutions and sustained performance.

President Tinubu directed the Chairman of the National Sports Commission to work with the NFF Secretariat and relevant football stakeholders to ensure continuity in essential football administration and facilitate a broad, consultative reform process.

The process will include appropriate engagement with FIFA and CAF while safeguarding Nigeria’s obligations within the international football framework.

The President called on football stakeholders and Nigerians to support the transition and work together to build a stronger, more accountable and successful football system.

Ibrahim Gusau confirms resignation as NFF president, Mohammed Sanusi steps down as general secretary

Ibrahim Gusau has confirmed his resignation as the president of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF).

The former chairman officially announced his resignation at a press conference held in Abuja on Thursday.

He said: “After consultation with family, friends and stakeholders, I just want to tell you that I have decided to resign from my position.

“As Nigerians, nobody is greater than this country. We all love our country and its progress. And as people who have been in football and managing football, we need to look at ourselves and ask, ‘What next?’ so we made a lot of consultations.”

Gusau added that he also advised members of the NFF board to follow his footsteps. He clarified, however, that he cannot say whether they would heed his advice.

A few minutes after Gusau’s announcement, the NFF,  on its X page, confirmed the resignation of Mohammed Sanusi as the federation’s general secretary.

The mass resignation comes a few weeks after the Super Falcons failed to qualify for the women’s World Cup for the first time since the competition’s inception. The disappointment triggered backlash for the NFF board members.

According to rumours, the NFF leadership was pressured to step down after intervention from top brass of the Federal Government, from the National Sports Commission (NSC) to the presidency.

Gusau was elected NFF president in 2022, and his tenure was supposed to end next month, with an elective congress scheduled for September 27.

The fate of the congress is uncertain as reports claim that a normalisation committee will be set up to oversee the federation’s affairs until further notice.

Under Gusau’s leadership, the Super Eagles, like the Falcons, also failed to qualify for the men’s 2026 World Cup, despite Africa getting 10 slots for the first time. The failure also extended to age-grade football, with the men’s U-17 and U-20 teams missing out on World Cups.
