Good Morning! Here Are Some Major News Headlines In The Newspapers Today: Protest: Police Begin House-To-House Search To Recover Looted Items In Kano

1. Operatives of the Kano State Police command on Friday launched a house-to-house search in a bid to recover some of the items stolen during the Day-one #EndBadGovernance protest in Kano.

 

2. Amnesty International has condemned the killing of several protesters allegedly by security personnel across Nigeria, describing the incident as “unjustified and unacceptable”. The Country Director, Isa Sanusi, stated this in a statement on Friday.

 

3. The Nigerian military has said it will intervene if violence recorded in some states in the ongoing nationwide protest tagged #EndBadGovernanceInNigeria escalates. The Chief of Defence Staff, Gen. Christopher Musa, during a press conference in Abuja, said the military would step in to control the looting and violence being witnessed in some parts of the country.

 

4. President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has said his administration is undertaking bold economic policies to propel Nigeria’s economy out of the downturn occasioned by multiple shocks in the global economy. He also called for global cooperation among African countries to tackle their shared economic challenges and take advantage of opportunities.

5. Despite a 24-hour curfew imposed by the Jigawa State government, hundreds of youths have returned to the streets in parts of Dutse, capital of the state. The government had declared curfew after widespread violence and destruction on the first day of the nationwide exercise.

 

6. Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has called on the public to ignore the viral threat on social media, X, demanding Igbo citizens to leave Lagos State in the next one month. According to the threat, all South-Easterners must vacate Lagos State, or face massive protests slated to hold from August 20th -30th, 2024.

 

7. Unknown gunmen have reportedly kidnapped the Caretaker Committee Chairman of Kabba Bunu Local Government Area, Zacheous Dare Michael. It was learnt that the incident happened on Friday evening along the Kaaba-Okene expressway in Kogi State.

 

8. Three protesters were shot dead allegedly by security operatives on Friday while attempting to vandalize food storage facilities belonging to some international non-governmental organizations in Potiskum town, Yobe State. Potiskum is one of the towns in Yobe State under a 24-hour curfew.

9. Kaduna Electric has disconnected the electricity supply to the state Government House and other agencies of the government over unpaid bills amounting to N2.9 billion. The Disco disclosed this in a statement released on its official X account on Friday.

 

10. Former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar, has asked President Bola Tinubu-led government to “come down” from their high horse, heed the voice of the people, and address the demands of protesters. He commended Nigerian youths participating in the #Hunger protests for their largely peaceful conduct while airing their grievances at the start of the nationwide protest. Atiku said this in a statement, in Abuja, on Friday.

Tinubu’s planned cabinet reshuffle won’t make any difference, says Buba Galadima

Buba Galadima, a chieftain of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), says President Bola Tinubu‘s planned cabinet reshuffle would not make any difference.

On September 25, Bayo Onanuga, special adviser to the president on information and strategy, said Tinubu “has expressed his desire to reshuffle his cabinet and he will do it”.

 

Speaking on Politics Today, a programme on Channels TV on Friday, Galadima said reshuffling the cabinet would not curb food inflation.

 

Galadima claimed that the president intends to reward his cronies with the reshuffle.

 

“That (planned cabinet reshuffle) has nothing to do with me or any Nigerian. What is of importance to all of us is bringing down the harsh conditions of living and the buck stops only on the table of one man. That is President Bola Ahmed Tinubu,” Galadima said.

 

“No amount of reshuffling can make a difference. As far as that team is only ‘job for the boys,’ nothing will come out of it.

“Anybody that calls himself president or governor is responsible for their cabinet’s performance. He should be told that some of his appointees are more interested in their pockets than service delivery.

 

“I expected him to do better than this; and to hit the ground running.”

 

The NNPP chieftain asked Tinubu to find a solution to the country’s foreign exchange crisis “which has seen the naira performing abysmally”.

 

There have been growing calls from Nigerians and members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) for Tinubu to reshuffle his cabinet and remove underperforming ministers.

 

Tinubu’s policies have driven petrol prices to record highs and depreciated the naira to record lows since he assumed the reins on May 29, 2023.

Israel claims Hezbollah leader killed in Beirut strike

The Israeli military announced early Saturday that Hezbollah chief Hassan Nasrallah was killed in a strike on Beirut.

 

“Hassan Nasrallah is dead,” military spokesman Lieutenant Colonel Nadav Shoshani announced on X. Military spokesman Captain David Avraham also confirmed to AFP that the Hezbollah chief had been “eliminated” following strikes Friday on the Lebanese capital.

JUST IN: FG declares October 1 as public holiday

The Federal Government has declared Tuesday, October 1, as a public holiday to commemorate Nigeria’s 64th independence anniversary.

Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, minister of interior, announced the holiday on Saturday in a statement by Magdalene Ajani, permanent secretary in the ministry.

The minister praised patient and hardworking Nigerians, adding that their sacrifices would not be in vain.
