Rivers battling huge debts left behind by Wike, says Fubara

Published

Governor Siminalayi Fubara of Rivers state says most of the projects commissioned by Nyesom Wike, his predecessor, were not fully paid for.

Fubara spoke on Tuesday during the commissioning of the Aleto-Ogale-Ebubu-Eteo road in Eleme LGA of Rivers.

The Rivers governor said contractors who executed projects commissioned by the Wike’s administration have started to request their balance payments.

Fubara said his administration is battling the problem of debt, adding that he is exercising restraint not to reveal certain things.

“This project was awarded at the cost of N6.7 billion, and I can say boldly that no kobo is remaining,” the Rivers governor said.

“We have paid the contractor completely without owing. The purpose of this is to let the world know that if there is one problem this administration has, it is debt.

“Most of the projects commissioned (referring to the last administration), they (the contractors) are coming for their balance payments, which are running into millions and billions.

“I have said I don’t want to talk because I am part of that system, but when they keep pushing me, I will say it.”

Fubara added that the claim that his administration is fighting with the federal government is untrue.

He noted that despite the support given to the state by the federal government, an insider is frustrating the efforts.

“I heard someone say that when we came in, we were fighting the federal government,” he said.

“If we are fighting FG, it’s a different matter. We are talking about the FG that is giving us support while there is a rat inside the house eating the bag of garri.”

Since 2023, Fubara and Wike, minister of the federal capital territory (FCT), have been at loggerheads over the political control of the state.

The rift has led to the polarisation of the Rivers state house of assembly.

While attending an event in Rivers at the weekend, Wike apologised for backing Fubara to succeed him as governor, adding that he would correct that mistake in 2027.

On Monday, Fubara said a judicial panel of inquiry would be set up to investigate the management of the state’s resources and affairs under past administrations.

Fubara succeeded Wike as governor in May 2023. He was the accountant-general under the former governor.

In May 2022, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) declared Fubara and 58 others wanted over an alleged N435 billion fraud.

Tinubu clearing unpaid pensions your government left behind in Nigeria Airways, Keyamo tells Atiku

The minister of aviation and aerospace development, Festus Keyamo, has said that President Bola Tinubu is clearing unpaid pensions and gratuities owed to former workers of the Nigeria Airways following the airline’s liquidation in September 2004, when Atiku Abubakar was vice-president.

Keyamo made the remark while reacting to a statement by Atiku, presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), who blamed the Tinubu administration for the rising cost of living in Nigeria.

Atiku accused Tinubu of implementing economic policies that have made the country more expensive for businesses and households, promising to reverse the trend if elected president.

Responding to Atiku’s statement in a post on X, Keyamo accused the former VP of hypocrisy, alleging that the Olusegun Obasanjo administration, in which Atiku served as vice-president, liquidated the national carrier and left thousands of workers without their pensions and gratuities.

“To add salt into their wounds, you refused to pay them their pensions and gratuities, running into billions of Naira,” the minister said.

“Twenty-two years later, after many of them have died out of frustration, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu @officialABAT is now clearing the mess you left behind.”

He said Tinubu approved and released N36 billion more than a month ago to settle the outstanding benefits and being succour to the affected families.

According to Keyamo, the former workers have started receiving payment alerts, while their union recently gave Tinubu an award in recognition of the intervention.

“Yet you sit down there and pontificate? It’s only the younger ones who don’t know your history you can attempt to hoodwink, but we will expose you to them. You cannot disguise your inordinate ambition in a cloud of rhetorical gibberish,” he said.

“When it is convenient for you, you claim some credit of the Obasanjo-Atiku government and when not convenient, you say Obasanjo was in charge and not you as Vice-President. The proper posturing of a con artist!”

‘Delusion of grandeur’ — Shettima calls Peter Obi master of bogus statistics

Published

Vice President Kashim Shettima has knocked former Anambra State Governor, Peter Obi, describing him as “the master of bogus statistics and incoherent economic prescriptions”.

Shettima made the remark on Wednesday at the inauguration of the All Progressives Congress Presidential Campaign Council at the State House Banquet Hall, Presidential Villa, Abuja.

Calling Obi “my very good friend”, the Vice President mocked his habit of comparing Nigeria with other countries, especially Bangladesh.

Shettima stated. “He seems convinced that a size 36 shirt tailored for Bangladesh will somehow fit Nigeria’s size 52 frame.”

He said Obi’s “fascination with foreign comparisons overlooks the peculiarities that distinguish one nation from another”.

According to Shettima, “Governance is an art that demands mastery of context, whether social, economic, political or institutional.

“What succeeds in Bangladesh cannot simply be transplanted to Nigeria without accounting for the differences in our population, economic structures, institutions and national circumstances.

“A country of over 250 million people cannot be governed through borrowed statistics and economic prescriptions detached from its peculiarities.”

The VP said he respected Obi but accused him of making a “bogus claim” about winning the 2023 presidential election without evidence to support the assertion.

“This is called delusion of grandeur.
Our contest is with the politics of yesterday dressed as tomorrow’s deliverance,” he said.

Obi has frequently cited Bangladesh in his criticism of the Tinubu administration’s economic management, including its borrowing.

In February, he said Nigeria’s challenge was fund mismanagement, not borrowing.

Obi ran as the Labour Party candidate in 2023 and finished third behind Tinubu and Atiku Abubakar.

He challenged Tinubu’s victory in court, and the Supreme Court dismissed his appeal and affirmed Tinubu’s election in October 2023.

Obi is seeking the presidency again in the election on January 16, 2027, on the platform of the Nigeria Democratic Congress.
