Sultan declares Wednesday as Eid-el-Fitr

Muhammad Abubakar, Sultan of Sokoto, has declared Wednesday as the first of Shawwal 1445AH.

 

In a statement on Monday, Sultan, who is the president general of the Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA), said Wednesday will be observed as Eid-el-Fitr day.

 

He said the report of national moon sighting committees across the country confirmed that there was no sighting of the new moon on Monday.

 

The statement was signed by Sambo Junaidu, the chairman of the advisory committee on religious affairs.

 

Muslims in Nigeria will complete their 30-day fasting on Tuesday.

 

“His Eminence, the Sultan felicitates with the Nigerian Muslim Ummah and wishes them Allah’s guidance and blessings,” the statement reads.

 

“The Sultan, while urging the Muslim Ummah to continue to pray for peace, progress, and development of the country, also wishes all Muslims a happy Eid-El-Fitri.”

 

Earlier today, authorities in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia on Monday said no moon crescent marking the beginning of Shawwal and the end of Ramadan has been sighted.

It also added that the Eid-El-Fitr would be held on Wednesday, April 10 to mark the beginning of the new Islamic month.

 

“The crescent moon was not sighted in Saudi Arabia. Therefore, Eid Al Fitr will be celebrated on Wednesday, 10th April 2024.

 

“May Allāh allow us to utilise the remaining moments of this blessed month to engage in that which pleases Him, may He accept our siyām, qiyām & a’māl & may He allow us to witness many more Ramadāns in good health. Āmīn.”

 

On April 7, the federal government announced Tuesday and Wednesday as public holidays.

Ado Bayero remains Emir as security agencies enforce court order against Sanusi’s reinstatement

The Kano state police command says law enforcement will obey the court order which ruled against the reinstatement of Muhammadu Sanusi as Emir.

 

On May 23, a federal high court in Kano ordered the state government not to enforce the Emirate Council Repeal Law 2024.

 

The law repealed the 2019 version which was used to oust Sanusi as Emir in 2020.

 

The amended law passed by the legislature, and assented to by the governor, restores the old order and invalidates the creation of five emirates.

 

Ruling in a suit filed by Aminu Babba Dan Agundi, the Sarkin Dawaki Babba of the Kano emirate, Mohammed Liman, the judge, asked the defendants to “suspend” and “not give effect to the Kano State Emirate Council (Repeal) Law, 2024 as they affect all offices and institutions of the Emirate Council created pursuant to the provisions of the Kano State Emirate Council Law, 2019”.

The court also ordered that all processes be served on the inspector-general of police (IGP) in Abuja.

 

The judge ruled that “all parties” should “maintain status quo until June 3, 2024″.

Addressing a press briefing at the headquarters of the command on Saturday morning, Usain Gumel, commissioner of police in Kano, said law enforcement will act in line with the ruling.

 

Gumel addressed the press alongside a brigade commander of the Nigerian Army and officials of other security agencies.

 

“The police command is expressly obeying the Court Order with SUIT No. FHC/KN/CS/182/2024 Dated 23rd May, 2024 issued by the federal high court sitting in Kano alongside all law enforcement agents in the state,” Gumel said.

 

“Therefore, we are calling on members of the public to know that the police in the state is working together with the military and other security agencies to provide the adequate security to everyone, as we are committed to carrying out our statutory duties as provided by the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.”

Sanusi was reinstated as Emir on Friday by Abba Yusuf, the Kano governor.

 

In the wee hours of Saturday, Aminu Bayero, the dethroned Emir, arrived Kano barely hours after Sanusi had sauntered into the palace.

Aminu Bayero, the deposed Emir of Kano, has moved into a palace in Nassarawa LGA after his return to the city in the early hours of Saturday.

 

Abba Yusuf, the Kano governor, ordered Bayero’s arrest after the monarch arrived in Kano to a hero’s welcome from a horde of his supporters.

 

A retinue of soldiers who have been providing protection for Bayero before he was dethroned, rode with him from the airport to the palace.

 

Bayero was replaced as Emir by Muhammadu Sanusi on Friday.

 

Sanusi was deposed in 2020 after falling out with Abdullahi Ganduje, then governor of the state.

 

The Kano house of assembly had repealed the 2019 law which was used to oust Sanusi and balkanise the emirate into five jurisdictions.

 

The new emirate law stipulated the sack of all the Emirs in the jurisdictions and a restoration of the old order — one Emir overseeing all of Kano.

Yusuf had given the sacked Emirs 48 hours to vacate their palaces.
