Good morning! Here Are Some Major News Headlines In The Newspapers Today: Police beef up security ahead of First Lady’s visit to Kano

1. Security measures have been put in place in Kano State ahead of today’s visit of the First Lady, Mrs. Oluremi Tinubu. Sanusi Bature, the Director-General of Media and Publicity to Governor Abba Yusuf, dropped the hint on Sunday, saying the President’s wife will during her visit, inaugurate the Faculty of Law Building named after her at the Maryam Abacha University, Kano.

 

2. President Bola Tinubu, on Sunday, February 11, said his administration’s agricultural plan is focused on expanding food production, through aggressive mechanized farming and making Nigeria a net food exporting country. Tinubu revealed his plan when he received a delegation from the Global Tijaniyya Movement, led by Khalifa Muhammad Mahe Niass, at the State House in Abuja.

 

3. Northern elite under the aegis of Arewa New Agenda, ANA, are set to engage the Federal Government with a set of proposals on how to stem insecurity and poverty, especially in the North and the country in general. According to the elders, the proposals, if considered and implemented, would pave the way for lasting prosperity for the entire country.

4. The Super Eagles of Nigeria on Sunday lost to the Elephants of Côte d’Ivoire in the final of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations. The Eagles took the lead in the 38th minute from a Troost-Ekong header.

 

5. Frequent changes in the Board of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) have been responsible for the slow pace of development in the oil-rich region, it was learnt on Sunday. This was contained in a communique issued at the end of a two-day NDDC Board and Management Retreat with the theme: “Renewed hope: A new era for vitality, peace and development”.

 

6. Kano State Public Complaint and Anti-Corruption Commission (PCACC) on Sunday raided and sealed at least five warehouses at Dawanau in Dawakin Tofa Local Government Area of the state stocked with essential food commodities suspected to be hoarded. However, warehouses found to be stocked with soybeans, sesame, wheat bran and Okro seeds were spared.

7. Lagosians have joined the number of states where there have been protests against High cost of living in the country. In Lagos, market women and youths protested in the Ibeju-Lekki area of Lagos State on Saturday. They carried placards with the inscriptions such as “Baba Tinubu, Nigerians are hungry”, and ‘Tinubu, come and rescue us”, among others.

 

8. Operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency have arrested a man taking thousands of concealed opioid pills to insurgents’ enclave in the Banki area of Borno State. The anti-narcotics agency also arrested a six-month pregnant lady and a mother of three children and three other women for drug trafficking, in major interdiction operations carried out by its operatives.

 

9. No fewer than four persons have allegedly been killed while one other was said to have escaped death as unknown persons reportedly abducted five men in Oke Irinja, Owode Yewa, Ogun State. It was gathered on Sunday that the quartet of Adamu Saliu, 21, Aliu Babuga, 24, Dairu Salihu, 32 and Mohammed Abdulai, 35, were the victims of Saturday’s incident.

10. The Nigeria Customs Service has secured the conviction of two smugglers, Felarun Oluwasegun and Fakorede Jelili, on February 6, 2024, after being charged to court. This is contained in the statement released by the agency on X (formerly Twitter) on Sunday.

President Bola Tinubu and Vice-President Kashim Shettima will now pay the required toll whenever they use the gates at airports.

 

Festus Keyamo, minister of aviation, announced this to journalists after the federal executive council (FEC) meeting chaired by Tinubu at the presidential villa in Abuja on Tuesday.

 

 Keyamo said he presented two memos which were approved by the council.

Tinubu suspends 0.5% cybersecurity levy

President Bola Tinubu has suspended the 0.5 percent cybersecurity levy after criticism and protest trailed the announcement.

 

Mohammed Idris, minister of information and national orientation, announced the suspension.

 

Idris said Tinubu directed the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) to suspend the implementation and review the modalities for its implementation.

Minister to sue Niger speaker over plans to ‘marry off’ 100 girls, says it’s ‘totally unacceptable’

Uju Kennedy-Ohanenye, minister of women affairs, has petitioned the inspector-general of police (IGP) and sought a court injunction to halt the marriage of 100 girls in Niger state.

 

Abdulmalik Sarkindaji, speaker of the Niger state house of assembly, announced last week that he would sponsor the wedding of 100 girls, some of whom were orphaned by insurgency, as part of his Maringa constituency project.

 

He said he had procured materials for the event scheduled for May 24, and promised to pay dowries for the bridegrooms.

 

Following the outcry that trailed the announcement, the speaker explained that he was only financing the wedding — not forcing the girls into marriage.

 

However, Kennedy-Ohanenye said the plan is unacceptable, and that the future of the girls should be a priority.

 

Speaking to journalists in Abuja on Monday, the minister said a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the issue will be carried out.

She said the ministry will take responsibility for the girls’ education and vocational training.

 

“I want to let the honorable speaker of house in Niger state know that this is totally unacceptable by Federal Minister Of Women Affairs and by the government,” Kennedy-Ohanenye said.

 

“Because there is something called the Child’s Right Act and I said it from the onset, that is no more business as usual.

 

“These children must be considered, their future must be considered, the future of the children to come out of their marriage must be considered.

 

“So I have gone to court. I have written him a letter and written a petition to the IG of police.

 

“And I have filed for injunction to stop him from whatever he is planning to do on the 24th, until a thorough investigation is carried out on those girls, find out whether they gave their consent, their ages, find out the people marrying them.

“As the speaker did not think about empowering these women or sending them to school or giving them some kind of training support financially.

 

“The women affairs have decided to take it up and we are going to educate the children.

 

“Those that do not want to go to school, we will train them in a skill, empower them with sustainable empowerment machines to enable that child build his or her life and make up her mind who and when to get married.

 

“If for any reason the speaker tries to do contrary to what I have just mentioned, there will be a serious legal battle between him and the Federal Ministry of Women Affairs.”

 

The minister added that based on the Child Rights Act, every child belongs to the state, hence the rights of every child will be protected from harm and violence.
