The University of Lagos has denied that five fake professors, among those purportedly discovered by the National Universities Commission (NUC), are from the university.

This is contained in a statement by the university’s Head of the Communication Unit, Adejoke Alaga-Ibraheem, issued to journalists on Saturday night.

She was reacting to information in some sections of the media that the NUC had uncovered about 100 professors spread across some Nigerian universities, including the University of Lagos.

Mrs Alaga-Ibraheem described the report as unsubstantiated and urged the public to disregard it.

“The attention of the University of Lagos (UNILAG) Management has been drawn to an unsubstantiated report on social media, claiming that the NUC has uncovered fake professors in some Nigerian universities, including ours.

“For the avoidance of doubt, the university management hereby explicitly refutes the five names listed as ‘fake’ professors of the university.

“Members of the university community and the general public are enjoined to completely disregard the report as the persons listed are not our staff and have never worked at any point in time and in any capacity, at the university.

“Please be re-assured of the institution’s commitment to its mandate of being a topnotch citadel of higher education, in deed and in truth,” she stated.

The bombs, which went off at about 7:24pm on Monday, hit a main market, the gate of the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital, and the Post Office flyover.

A statement signed by Nahum Daso, the command spokesperson, said “preliminary investigation reveals that the incidents were carried out by suspected suicide bombers”.

“Regrettably, a total of twenty three (23) persons lost their lives, while one hundred and eight (108) others sustained varying degrees of injuries,” the statement reads.

Tinubu swears in Taiwo Oyedele as minister

President Bola Tinubu, on Monday, administered oath of office to Taiwo Oyedele as minister of state for finance.

The ceremony was held about 2:30pm in the president’s office at the State House in Abuja.

Congratulating the new minister, Tinubu thanked Oyedele for accepting the responsibility to serve the country, and praised his dedication and role in shaping Nigeria’s tax reforms.

He described the minister as “a very dedicated and highly determined individual,” adding that it did not take long for him to decide where the appointee would best serve in government.

“You are just a very dedicated and highly determined individual. It didn’t take much for me to decide where you fit and where you need to be to further help the country,” the president said.

Tinubu acknowledged the complexity of the assignment, noting that overseeing fiscal policy and responsibility at a time when Nigeria is pursuing economic stability requires strong leadership.

Oyedele’s swearing-in comes five days after the senate confirmed his nomination.

The confirmation followed a screening session during which the tax expert pledged to pursue fiscal reforms aimed at improving government revenue, ensuring realistic budgeting, and strengthening Nigeria’s economic management framework.

Tinubu had earlier forwarded Oyedele’s nomination to the senate in a letter dated March 3, 2026, in accordance with section 147(2) of the 1999 constitution.

A native of Ikaram-Akoko in Ondo state, the 50-year-old fiscal policy expert has over two decades of experience in public finance and tax administration.

Before his appointment, Oyedele chaired the presidential committee on fiscal policy and tax reforms, inaugurated in August 2023.

Under his leadership, the committee developed four major tax reform bills aimed at simplifying Nigeria’s tax system.

The reforms also introduced incentives including zero income tax for Nigerians earning N800,000 or less annually and tax exemptions for small businesses with an annual turnover of under N50 million.

The four bills — the Nigeria Tax Bill, Nigeria Tax Administration Bill, Nigeria Revenue Service (Establishment) Bill, and Joint Revenue Board (Establishment) Bill — were passed by the national assembly in 2025 and signed into law by the president on June 26 of the same year.

The new tax regime took effect on January 1, 2026.

Oyedele previously spent 22 years at PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC), where he rose to become fiscal policy partner and Africa tax leader.

He holds a higher national diploma in accountancy and finance from Yaba College of Technology and a bachelor’s degree in applied accounting from Oxford Brookes University in the United Kingdom.

The economist has also attended executive programmes at the London School of Economics, Yale University, the Gordon Institute of Business Science, and the Harvard Kennedy School.

Oyedele currently lectures at Babcock University and serves as a visiting scholar at Lagos Business School.

He replaces Doris Uzoka-Anite, who was recently redeployed to the ministry of budget and national planning as minister of state — her third portfolio under the Tinubu administration.

During his senate screening, Oyedele said his appointment was “a call to serve at a time of great economic challenges and opportunities,” pledging to contribute to Nigeria’s fiscal management.
