Arsenal smash six to secure top spot in Champions League group

Published

on

Arsenal’s five first half goals sent the Gunners through to the last-16 of the Champions League in the grandest manner as Lens were obliterated at the Emirates.

The Gunners scored four times before the half hour mark as Kai Havertz, Gabriel Jesus, Bukayo Saka and Gabriel Martinelli all fired home, with skipper Martin Odegaard adding a fifth with a fierce shot just before the break.

Mikel Arteta was able to make changes in the second period, and Jorginho stroked home the sixth from the penalty spot late on.

Here are the game’s main talking points:

1. Kai Havertz may have found his mojo

So it turns out a little spell at left-back can work wonders for you. Havertz was dispatched there on international duty of late, and at the time it was used as proof of just how far his stock has fallen both for club and country since his summer switch from Chelsea. Well, before that in truth.

He’d only scored once for the Gunners in 19 games at that point, and that was a penalty at Bournemouth which he was only allowed to take after Odegaard took pity on him. He’s now got two in two though, proper forward’s strikes both, and while that is unlikely to herald a sudden prolific burst it should at least raise the confidence levels.

2. The famous five, and the best five?

That Havertz strike was the first of five Arsenal goals in the first half of course, all netted by the five most attacking players that Mikel Arteta picked to start the game. Can things go much better for a coach? Not really, especially when three of them got assists too.

The only regret among Gunners forwards would have been among those who began the night on the bench then, with Leandro Trossard and Eddie Nketiah missing out on the fun. Trossard in particular has been good in recent weeks, but if there is to be a Havertz winter bloom then he might have to get used to the sidelines.

3. Does anyone know what handball is?

You can only hope that several Newcastle fans were so fed up by Tuesday night’s football that they didn’t bother tuning in on Wednesday.

If they had then they’d have seen the ball strike Havertz’s thigh and then move onto his arm in much the same way as Tino Livramento conceded that penalty in Paris, only Arsenal – who were 4-0 up at the time – didn’t concede a spot-kick.

Were the incidents slightly different? Yes, and someone somewhere will be able to bore us all about natural and unnatural positions, but that is the problem that the authorities have created for themselves, and it doesn’t look like getting better any time soon.

4. Bukayo Saka gets a goal and a rest

Saka was taken off midway through the second half

You know things are going well for Arsenal when Arteta is able to take Saka off. The wide man is never given much of a rest by his manager, often to the displeasure of Gunners fans concerned about burnout, but off he came here in the 66th minute to be replaced by Reiss Nelson.

Arsenal beat Man Utd to return top and keep title hope alive

Published

Arsenal returned to the top of the Premier League and ensured the title race will go to the final day with victory over Manchester United at Old Trafford.

The Gunners delivered an unconvincing display against a severely depleted United side but did enough to secure the win that puts them one point ahead of Manchester City having played a game more.

Leandro Trossard struck after 20 minutes when lazy defending from struggling veteran Casemiro played Kai Havertz onside and his cross was turned in by the Belgian at the near post.

United showed plenty of endeavour but suffered from a glaring lack of quality and never seriously tested Arsenal keeper David Raya, as their own hopes of European football next season faded further.

Arsenal must now hope north London rivals Tottenham Hotspur do them a favour by getting a result at home to Manchester City on Tuesday.

The Gunners host Everton in their final game of the season next Sunday, while City are at home to West Ham.

Co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe chose to cast another eye over Erik ten Hag’s struggling side rather than travel to Wembley to watch United win the Women’s FA Cup for the first time.

It is hard to work out what Ratcliffe would have learned from watching another home defeat – other than it simply re-affirming the size of the job he has on his hands lifting this fallen football giant.

United’s squad, hardly fit for purpose when all players are available, was stripped of key assets such as captain Bruno Fernandes, who watched from the directors’ box with a pained expression.

Ten Hag, his smart suit soaked by a torrential downpour amid a thunderstorm that hit Old Trafford late on, will point to his lack of resources – and rightly so on this occasion.

But the fact United were unable to cause Arsenal keeper Raya any serious problems was a sobering lesson in the current state of the Red Devils.

Kobbie Mainoo tried to galvanise the hosts’ midfield while Alejandro Garnacho ran tirelessly out wide, but it was a tough afternoon for young striker Rasmus Hojlund, who got very little change out of Arsenal defensive duo William Saliba and Gabriel.

United are a club that needs a reboot and re-invigoration and – while this was not the day to make judgements on Ten Hag – it is becoming increasingly difficult to see how the Dutchman can be part of the new era and structure under Ratcliffe.

The elation of Arsenal’s fans at this vital win was not dampened by the storm that arrived in Manchester just before the final whistle as skies darkened and lightning flashed around the stadium.

Arsenal know Manchester City’s fate still lies in the champions’ own hands and two wins against Spurs and West Ham will take a fourth successive title to Etihad Stadium.

Mikel Arteta’s side, however, have done all they can and two hazardous-looking fixtures – away to Spurs in the north London derby and here at United, where they have suffered before – have been safely negotiated.

No matter that this was an Arsenal display lacking their usual fluency – at this stage of the season the only currency that counts is wins and the visitors did the job.

Once again Trossard made the difference with a trademark swoop at the near post ahead of Casemiro and Aaron Wan-Bissaka for the decisive moment.

Arsenal will now hope Spurs boss Ange Postecoglou is as good as his word and they can somehow raise themselves to upset City.

The Gunners still have a chance of their first title in 20 years going into the final game of the season – and they would have happily settled for that in August.

Tobi Amusan ran a world-leading 12.40 seconds (0.9m/s) to win the 100m hurdles at Saturday’s inaugural Jamaica Athletics Invitational in Kingston.

The world record holder claimed the win ahead of Danielle Williams, the world champion who ran a season’s best 12.46 seconds, and American Christina Clemons who was third with 12.54 seconds.

The Nigerian has now taken over the world lead from American Tonea Marshall who had run 12.42 seconds in late April.

Amusan’s latest win comes two months before the Paris 2024 Olympics.

John Enoh, the minister of sports development, took to X to congratulate the pace-setter over the feat.

“Tobi, you keep making our country proud. Paris Olympics is around the corner, your performance gives us hope just like others, that Nigeria is set to break a jinx. Keep soaring, we are proud of you,” the minister’s post reads in part.

The 26-year-old recently set a new African record of 7.77s in the 60m hurdles event at the Astana Indoor Meet in Kazakhstan, breaking the 25-year-old record held by Gloria Alozie.

Crystal Palace demolish poor Man Utd 4-0

Published

Crystal Palace sealed a first league double over Manchester United with a rampant 4-0 win at Selhurst Park.

Michael Olise ran 20 yards under no challenge to eventually slot beyond Andre Onana to put Oliver Glasner’s side in the lead after 13 minutes.

Jean-Philippe Mateta surged beyond Johnny Evans to finish emphatically for his sixth goal in a row on home turf.

Tyrick Mitchell tapped in from close range after a fine cross by Adam Wharton in the 58th minute and French youngster Olise capitalised on a Casemiro mistake to power a strike beyond a wanting Onana.

From the first minute, Glasner’s men looked full of intent against a United side who failed to turn up at Selhurst Park.

As a defensive unit, United put in one of the worst performances of the season with Casemiro and Evans becoming their 14th centre back partnership used this campaign.

Eberechi Eze and Olise were given the freedom of the pitch to control the play and caused United trouble on numerous occasions.

Ten Hag’s side threatened in a couple of moments with Casemiro twice having goals ruled out – the first for a foul on Dean Henderson and the second for offside.

Odsonne Edouard almost rubbed further salt in the wounds but his injury-time effort struck the upright.

With title-chasing Arsenal next up, United must greatly improve to avoid another thrashing.

At one stage in the season, Ten Hag’s side looked as though they could put pressure on Aston Villa for a Champions League spot.

That dream is long gone and United are now at risk of missing out on Europe all together for next season.

They must either finish seventh in the Premier League to secure Europa Conference League football or beat Manchester City in the FA Cup final to seal a Europa League place.

One win in seven has seen United slide down the table into eighth and their fixtures do not get any easier with Arsenal visiting Old Trafford on Sunday.

A defeat by this scoreline can be hugely damaging but for those United fans who made the trip to Selhurst Park on a Bank Holiday Monday, it is the manner in which the players seemingly looked disinterested that will hurt the most.

All eyes have been on United’s talented youngster, Kobbie Mainoo, and rightfully so but it is hard to ignore the performances being put in by Wharton since his January move.

Wharton, 20, has impressed since day one at Selhurst Park after his £18m move from Blackburn Rovers on transfer deadline day.

Up against England internationals Mason Mount and Mainoo, Wharton shone with his slick passing between the lines and combativeness in defence.

Positionally, Wharton is excellent. Especially for someone at such a tender age. He has the ability to know exactly where to be on the pitch and when it is best to release the ball for a team-mate.

The former Blackburn man has been a huge addition to a Palace side who have won four of their past five.

A fantastic cross for Joachim Andersen to set up Mitchell’s goal was just a small sample of the quality Wharton brings.

England boss Gareth Southgate was in attendance in London with a preliminary squad for Euro 2024 set to be announced on Tuesday, 21 May and with the Three Lions short of players in the mould of Wharton, a shock inclusion could be on the cards.
