Gunmen attack Atiku campaign chairman’s residence in Rivers, vandalise vehicles

Published

on

Yet-to-be-identified gunmen, on Thursday morning attacked the residence of the chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Presidential Campaign Council in Rivers State, Lee Maeba.

About five cars in the residence were vandalised during the attack.

Maeba, an ally of PDP presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, confirmed the attack.

The PDP presidential campaign chairman, who came into Port Harcourt on Thursday morning, said neighbours observed strange movements around his residence.

He said a young man called him to warn him about the planned attack. Maeba said his house was attacked shortly after he went out to visit his mother-in-law.

“They shot at the gate and force the gate open. They tied the gateman and shouted where is he? The next thing they did was shoot at the cars. What is my offence? Atiku does not leave here. I am a democrat and I don’t have any plan to harm anybody,” Maeba said.

About three persons were reportedly injured during the attack on the residence of the former senator who represented Rivers South East at the National Assembly.

Meanwhile, the Rivers State has asked security agencies to prove the incident.

Security agencies must be discreet and thorough in investigating all incidents

The Rivers State Government has seen isolated reports suggesting that some persons are purportedly being physically molested for political reasons. Security agencies must exercise the highest level of diligence, discreetness and carefulness in their work to sift the wheat from the chaff in order to arrive at a credible conclusion.

It is not strange to find politicians staging high level melodrama to either cover up their tracks or muddle up the waters to achieve a preconceived narrative aimed at hoodwinking the public for political reasons especially at a time like this.

Today, a report by former Senator Lee Maeba surfaced on social media that he got a call from a young man. And the caller purportedly, in his own words said, “that they have instructions from either government or some quarters to attack my house.” This makes it obvious that Senator Maeba should help security agencies in unraveling the purported attack on his house and those behind it. It is not enough to blame such an attack on ‘either government or some quarters.’ He should try and remember exactly whom the caller said sent him (the caller).
