How 23 abducted Kaduna train passengers were released

Published

on

Following months of intrigues and horse-trading, the remaining 23 passengers abducted by terrorists from the Abuja- Kaduna train regained their freedom on Wednesday.

Their release, according to reports, followed an intervention by a committee set up by the Chief of Defence Staff, General Lucky Irabo.

Some family members of the victims yesterday confirmed the release of their loved ones.

The Secretary, Chief of Defence Staff Action Committee (CDSAC), Professor Usman Yusuf, in a statement, announced that the Federal Government has secured the release of the remaining 23 victims of the train attack.

“I am pleased to announce to the nation and the world that at 1600Hrs. (4:00pm) today, Wednesday 5-10-2022, the seven-man Presidential Committee assembled by the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), General L E O Irabor, secured the release and took custody of all the 23 remaining passengers held hostage by Boko Haram Terrorists.

“The nation owes a debt of gratitude to the Nigerian military under the leadership of the CDS who conceived and guided the operation from start to finish.

“All sister security agencies and the federal ministry of transportation contributed immensely to this operation.

“The unwavering support of the President and Commander-in-Chief of the Nigerian Armed Forces, President Muhammadu Buhari is what made it all possible. Members of this Committee are grateful for the rare honour and privilege to be part of this humanitarian operation. May God Almighty heal our wounds and bring peace to our land,” Prof. Yusuf said.

It would be recalled that on March 28th, 2022, a Kaduna-bound train was attacked by terrorist with several persons killed, injured and abducted.

Since the incident, there had been a series of negotiations, protests and ransom payments to secure the release of the victims.

President Muhammadu Buhari had sometime in August, met with the relatives of the abducted victim in Abuja, where he assured them that efforts were being made to ensure the safe rescue of the remaining persons in captivity.

However, Yusuf said the seven-man Presidential Committee assembled by the Chief of Defence Staff secured the release and took custody of the remaining 23 passengers held hostage by Boko Haram terrorists following the attack on the Abuja to Kaduna train.

What is not yet clear is whether ransom was paid or not before the release of the abductees.

Over N2bn was reportedly paid in ransom before the release of those who earlier regained their freedom.

Confirming the release of their loved ones, Muhammadu Sabiu, whose younger brother, Abdullahi Muhammad, a National Youth Corps Member (NYSC), was on the train that faithful day, said, “Yes, I can confirm to you that the head of the committee called to break the news to us.”

He said though he has not seen his brother face to face, he told Daily Trust that the victims were on their way to Kaduna from Abuja.

“I can only confirm to you that the victims have been released and they are on their way back to Kaduna. We are right now praying for their safe arrival and reuniting with them. I also want to commend the government’s efforts.”

Tasiu Muhammad Barau also confirmed to Daily Trust that his brother, Abdullah was receiving treatment at a hospital in Abuja.

He said, “I spoke with my brother Abdullah who is one of the Kaduna train victims and he told me he is receiving treatment in a hospital in Abuja.”

Also, a family member of Aminu Usman, popularly called Dan Nasarawa, confirmed that they were contacted.

He said, “We have been contacted that Aminu has been released. We are now waiting to know when he will be handed over to us.”

He said he could not confirm whether the released victims were in Kaduna or had arrived in Abuja adding. “What is important is that he and the other passengers have been released.”

How negotiators sealed deal

However, a source privy to the negotiations that led to the release of the captives, described the process as torturous.

He said months of talks on both sides culminated in a nod from the terrorists, at the weekend, for representatives of the government to go to an agreed rendezvous to pick up the victims.

“But on arrival, the negotiators were shocked to face another round of talks as some gunmen, the bandits working with the insurgents, kicked against releasing the victims without any ransom payment.

“The deal was that the kidnappers had their own demands on government. This was agreed in principle but at the last minute they shifted the goal post.”

It was gathered that it took another round of pleadings and assurances before the victims were released to the negotiators.

“One of the agreements reached was for the government to open a dialogue with them for a broader resolution of some issues,” the source said.

NRC to unveil plans on train resumption

Meanwhile, there was excitement in the NRC yesterday following the release of the remaining 23 kidnapped passengers of the Abuja-Kaduna train attack.

Officials said the NRC had been looking forward to the release of the remaining victims to enable it to resume train service on the route.

It would be recalled that the NRC had planned to resume the train service on May 23 before suspending the plan indefinitely following pressure from families of the victims who insisted on the rescue of their relatives before the resumption of the service.

Afterwards, the former Minister of Transportation, Mr Rotimi Amaechi declared that the train service would not resume until all the kidnapped victims were released.

The new Minister, Muazu Sambo, also reiterated the stance, saying it would be insensitive to resume the train service while the victims were still in captivity.

The NRC Managing Director, Engr. Fidet Okhiria had told reporters last week that over N530m was lost in six months to the suspension of the Abuja-Kaduna train service.

“Regrettably, due to inactivity on the Abuja-Kaduna train, which was caused by the last terrorist attack, we have recorded a shortfall of N531 million on the Abuja-Kaduna route from March to August 2022.

“The shortfall is from expected income following the disruption occasioned by the train attack,” he had said. Also, the news of the release of the remaining 23 abducted passengers triggered excitement in the NRC yesterday.

Though the MD could not be reached as of press time, a source close to him said the NRC would soon unveil plans to resume the train service.

“As soon as we have a plan, we will share it with you. We are happy with the news though we are still trying to confirm the authenticity. We don’t want to dwell on rumours. But like we have always maintained, the train service would resume as soon as possible,” the official said.

Buhari welcomes release of hostages

President Muhammadu Buhari has welcomed the safe release of the remaining 23 kidnapped train passengers held in captivity by Boko Haram terrorists.

The president, in a statement issued on Wednesday by his media aide, Garba Shehu, expressed his happiness and satisfaction, and that of the entire nation with the military as well as other security agencies on the development.

He directed that the relief that came to the nation arising from the closure of this unfortunate saga must be sustained at all times, all over the federation.

President Buhari also credited his government for resolving the issue and the de-escalation of the terrorism, banditry and kidnapping that surged recently, giving assurances that the efforts will be sustained.

The President said the nation owed the military and all other security and intelligence agencies a debt of gratitude for the successful conduct of the operation leading to the safe release of the hostages in line with his earlier directives.

Okuama: Women protest return of armed youths

Published

The women of Okoloba community in Bomadi local government area, weekend, protested against what they called the return of armed youths of Okuama in Ughelli South local government area, who they alleged were threatening the peace of the riverine area.

The placard carrying women, led by the chairlady of Okoloba community, Mrs Timipakebi Goodwin, and secretary, Mrs Mary Koibi, staged a peace protest on black attires along the coastal fringe of Okoloba community, chanting against violence and bloodbath, as well as sending an S.O.S. to the federal government to come to their aid.

Some inscriptions on the placards read: ‘We say No to violence’, ‘Enough of the killings on our land’, ‘Armed Okuama youths returning in a commando style’, ‘We say No to the return of armed youths of Okuama’, ‘Resettle Okuama people among their Ewu brothers in Ughelli South LGA’, ‘We mourn the killing of the 17 soldiers’ and among others.

The chairlady of Okoloba, Mrs Goodwin, speaking to newsmen with a written address that was made available to security apparatuses, which include the police, DSS, NSCDC, JTF as well as the acting chairman of Bomadi local government council, noted that the latest killing by the youths of Okuama showed that they could kill human beings at the slightest provocation.

The women’s presentations as well as the written address read in part: “First, we the women of Okoloba community sympathize with the killing of 17 soldiers and officers of the Nigerian army on a peace and rescue mission to Okuama, following the kidnap of our son. We sincerely mourn their untimely death and pray for the repose of their souls. We also pray for their families.

“However, less than 24 hours after the exit of the troops from Okuama, fresh crisis erupted with another neighbouring community, culminating in the killing of one person while three other persons were seriously injured. The person who was killed and those sustaining machete wounds were alleged to have gone there to loot.

“The latest killing showed that the people of Okuama can kill a human at the slightest provocation; the sanctity of human life means nothing to them. It also shows that neighbouring Ijaw communities like Okoloba are not safe.

“So, resetting the people of Okuama in their present location, which is in-between communities in Bomadi local government area, is an attempt to encourage further communal clashes and bloodbath.

“Just last week, youths of Okuama community came out of the Mein-toruabubor creek, which leads to Ewu, on three speedboats and all of them on camouflage. They shot sporadically in the air before proceeding to OKuama. They moved to and fro the creek three times, and at every time they shot their guns in the air at the entrance of the creek.

“We are calling on the federal government to come to our aid, and the panacea to these incessant clashes and killings is for the government to relocate Okuama to Ewu clan in Ughelli South Local Government Area, where they truly and rightly belong.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, on Friday, handed over $22,000 recovered from a convicted internet fraudster, Hakeem Olanrewaju, to the Federal Bureau of Investigations, in Lagos.

Justice Nicholas Oweibo of the Federal High Court sitting in Ikoyi, Lagos had, on August 15, 2023, ordered that the money recovered from Olanrewaju, who was sentenced to two years imprisonment for identity theft and impersonation, be restituted to his victim in the United States of America.

The spokesperson for the EFCC, Dele Oyewale, revealed the development in a statement on Saturday.

Oyewale noted that, speaking during the handover ceremony in Lagos, the acting Director, Lagos Zonal Command of the EFCC, Michael Wetkas, reaffirmed the commission’s dedication to combating crimes and restoring sanity to the nation.
“We are delighted to be handing over this proceeds of crime today.

“The EFCC is willing and always ready to do more,” Wetkas was qouted as saying.
Responding, the FBI Legal Attaché, Charles Smith, said, “The EFCC and the FBI work collaboratively together, and it is thanks to the EFCC that we can recover funds of this nature, especially from Business Email Compromise.”

He noted that, “This type of crime cripples businesses in the US, and for them to recover the money within one to two years gives hope to the affected companies and brings some level of justice, even if not all subjects have been identified.

“We hope our relationship continues and fosters a more cohesive partnership between the two agencies. If there’s anything the FBI can do to support this investigation, we will do so.

“We appreciate this on behalf of the FBI and thank the EFCC.”

Alleged $600k bribe: I had no contact with Emefiele… money was collected by ex-CBN official, witness tells court

Published

By

Victor Onyejiuwa, managing director of The Source Computers Limited, says he never had any interaction with Godwin Emefiele during his dealings with the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN).

On Friday, Onyejiuwa again appeared before the Lagos high court in the ongoing trial of Emefiele, former governor of the CBN.

Emefiele and his co-defendant, Henry Omoile, are currently facing trial on a 26-count charge.

The former CBN governor and Omoile have pleaded not guilty to all the charges.

Since their arraignment, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has been presenting witnesses to support its case against Emefiele.

FIRST APPEARANCE

On May 9, Onyejiuwa appeared before the court for the first time to testify against Emefiele.

Onyejiuwa told the court that his company provided information and communication technology assistance to the apex bank between 2014 and 2019.

The witness said the CBN awarded at least five contracts to his company during the period.

He added that in 2017, the apex bank awarded an “enterprise storage and servers” contract to his firm.

Onyejiuwa said after the contract was executed, he was approached by John Ikechukwu Ayoh, a former CBN director, who allegedly said the “management needs something” from the contract.

The witness said Ayoh told him that if he did not accede, the funds meant for the contract would not be approved by the management.

He further told the court that Ayoh collected $400,000 and $200,000 — on two separate occasions — from him before the funds for executed projects were paid by the apex bank.

Ayoh had previously told the court that he collected money from contractors as gratification for awarding contracts to them based on the instruction of Emefiele.

CROSS-EXAMINATION OF ONYEJIUWA

At the resumption of the hearing on Friday, Olalekan Ojo, counsel to Emefiele, cross-examined Onyejiuwa on his previous testimony.

Asked if he physically engaged with Emefiele during his transactions, the witness said he did not meet with the former CBN governor.

Onyejiuwa said all channels of communication were through Ayoh.

“We only communicated through WhatsApp calls. I was interfacing with Ayoh. I have not met with the first defendant (Emefiele) before,” he said.

Emefiele’s counsel also asked the witness whether he confirmed that Ayoh was acting on behalf of CBN management — but Onyejiuwa responded in the negative.

Onyejiuwa said he was under pressure from his partners on financial obligations and that he had no choice but to accede to Ayoh’s request.

The witness also said he did not report the alleged request for a bribe to the police or EFCC.

After the cross-examination, the case was adjourned till July 9 and 10 for continuation of trial.
