Three-year-old dies after receiving injection in Lagos hospital

The Lagos State government has commenced investigations into the probable cause of the death of a three-year-old boy, David Nwogu, who died while being treated at the Maternal and Child Hospital in the Ajah area of Lagos State.

According to reports, the victim was brought to the hospital by his parents on Friday, September 23, over cough and catarrh, but died after receiving injections at the hospital.

In a video that went viral on Wednesday, the victim’s mother, Loveth, stated that her son was energetic before he was given the injections, which led to his death the next day.

She said, “I took my son to the hospital on Friday morning because he had cough and catarrh; he didn’t have a fever or anything, it was just cough and catarrh. The catarrh actually started on Wednesday, but I took him to the hospital just to check for infections since he was about to start school on Monday.

“They ran a test and said he had small pneumonia, infection and cold, but not malaria. They started treatment and I called my husband that day; he told me my son was no longer coughing and they said he might even be discharged from the hospital soon.

“On Saturday morning, a nurse gave him an injection aside from the ones initially given and he vomited everything he had eaten because he reacted to the drugs. Instead of the nurse to change the injection or even monitor him on what to do, she didn’t do any of that.

“I asked my son later if he wanted to eat his cereal because he liked it, but he said no. He slept off and I woke him around 4am to eat again but he still didn’t want to eat. I knew he would still eat before the day breaks because he would be hungry.

“Around 7am, the nurse came and said I should get him ready for another injection. I asked the nurse if he could eat his cereal first and immediately my son heard this, he also wanted to eat. But the nurse insisted that he should take the injection. I insisted again, but she remained adamant and gave him the injections. At the fourth injection, my son shouted, ‘Mummy, daddy, my hand,’ that was it. He went cold and died. I lost my son that day.”

Loveth, who spoke to our correspondent on Wednesday, stated that the nurse who administered the injections disappeared after the incident.

She noted that the family lawyers were already on the matter.

While lamenting beside the boy’s corpse in another video, the victim’s father stated that the government hospital had already reported the incident at the Ogombo Police Station.

He said, “I went to the Ogombo Police Station to report all that happened but I was told that they (the hospital) had already reported the incident. The DPO knew everything. All they have been saying here is autopsy; no one can explain what happened.”

Menawhile, the Lagos State Commissioner for Health, Akin Abayomi, in a statement on Wednesday, commiserated with the family of the boy, adding that investigation into the incident had started.

He said, “It is pertinent to note that the management of the facility had also officially reported the incident to the ministry while investigation into the allegation and the circumstances surrounding the unfortunate incident has since commenced on a facility level.

Alleged $600k bribe: I had no contact with Emefiele… money was collected by ex-CBN official, witness tells court

Victor Onyejiuwa, managing director of The Source Computers Limited, says he never had any interaction with Godwin Emefiele during his dealings with the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN).

On Friday, Onyejiuwa again appeared before the Lagos high court in the ongoing trial of Emefiele, former governor of the CBN.

Emefiele and his co-defendant, Henry Omoile, are currently facing trial on a 26-count charge.

The former CBN governor and Omoile have pleaded not guilty to all the charges.

Since their arraignment, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has been presenting witnesses to support its case against Emefiele.

FIRST APPEARANCE

On May 9, Onyejiuwa appeared before the court for the first time to testify against Emefiele.

Onyejiuwa told the court that his company provided information and communication technology assistance to the apex bank between 2014 and 2019.

The witness said the CBN awarded at least five contracts to his company during the period.

He added that in 2017, the apex bank awarded an “enterprise storage and servers” contract to his firm.

Onyejiuwa said after the contract was executed, he was approached by John Ikechukwu Ayoh, a former CBN director, who allegedly said the “management needs something” from the contract.

The witness said Ayoh told him that if he did not accede, the funds meant for the contract would not be approved by the management.

He further told the court that Ayoh collected $400,000 and $200,000 — on two separate occasions — from him before the funds for executed projects were paid by the apex bank.

Ayoh had previously told the court that he collected money from contractors as gratification for awarding contracts to them based on the instruction of Emefiele.

CROSS-EXAMINATION OF ONYEJIUWA

At the resumption of the hearing on Friday, Olalekan Ojo, counsel to Emefiele, cross-examined Onyejiuwa on his previous testimony.

Asked if he physically engaged with Emefiele during his transactions, the witness said he did not meet with the former CBN governor.

Onyejiuwa said all channels of communication were through Ayoh.

“We only communicated through WhatsApp calls. I was interfacing with Ayoh. I have not met with the first defendant (Emefiele) before,” he said.

Emefiele’s counsel also asked the witness whether he confirmed that Ayoh was acting on behalf of CBN management — but Onyejiuwa responded in the negative.

Onyejiuwa said he was under pressure from his partners on financial obligations and that he had no choice but to accede to Ayoh’s request.

The witness also said he did not report the alleged request for a bribe to the police or EFCC.

After the cross-examination, the case was adjourned till July 9 and 10 for continuation of trial.
