Niger govt demolishes kidnapper’s house in Minna

Niger State Government has demlished the residence of a notorious kidnapper, whose house is used as a hideout at the Nikangbe area of Minna, the state capital.

The government demolished the suspect’s two bedroom flat he lived in and another uncompleted two bedroom apartment under construction with the proceeds he allegedly got from his crimes.

Before the demolition, the state Commissioner for Local Government, Chieftaincy Affairs and Internal Security, Honorable Emmanuel Umar said the move would serve as a deterrent to other criminals.

Though he did not give details of who the kidnapper was, he explained that it has been established because the suspect used part of the proceeds of the crime to buy the building.

“This is a building owned by a kidnapper that has been arrested. It is a proceeds of crime and it is in our policy not to allow any criminality to reign in this state. We can establish this and that henceforth, we will not allow any criminal to have a place in our land. It is part of the determination of the Governor to ensure Niger state is safe for us all,” according to him.

Speaking, the Ward Head of Kpakungun who also oversees Nkangbe, Tanko Ibrahim commended the efforts of the state government in its bid to keep the state safe for the people.

He decried the lack of cooperation by people of the area when asked to report any stranger coming into the community, adding every stranger is suspicious until his or her job is confirmed to be legitimate.

According to him, “seeing this shows that our lives are in danger if the people do not report strangers moving into the community. We, as community leaders, are trying our best but the people are not helping matters. They rarely report people who move in or buy lands or houses.”

A fuel tanker on Saturday morning fell and caught fire at the Ibafo/Aseese axis of the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.

The Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Agency said that no life was lost.

Emergency responders—men of the Fire Rescue Services, Federal Road Safety Corps, and others worked to put out the fire.

The fire incident was eventually successfully contained.

Emergency operatives remain on the ground to assist in easing the traffic congestion caused by the incident.

TRACE Spokesperson, Babatunde Akinbiyi, said that the incident happened around 7am.

His message read, “Fire update at Ibafo. As of 0830 hrs., the fire has finally been put to rest. Traffic is gradually moving.

“Operatives are on the ground to ease the traffic. I will provide additional updates later.”

Meanwhile, TRACE Divisional Commander, Mowe-Ibafo, Kabir Ojerinde, confirmed that no lives were lost in the accident.

He mentioned that the trans-loading of the remaining fuel into another tanker is currently ongoing.

Regarding the cause of the accident, Ojerinde explained, “Yes, the crash happened very early in the morning around 5:30 am. Fortunately, there were no other vehicles involved.

“While we cannot confirm if overspeeding was a factor, the tanker was said to have overturned and caught fire.

“The emergency response was swift, and we moved the truck from the road to ease traffic.

He also noted that the name of the filling station or tanker owner remains unknown at this time.

“The tanker is burnt beyond recognition, so we do not have details about the tanker’s ownership and number plate,” he added.

On the other hand, the Ogun FRSC spokesperson, Florence Okpe, said in a statement that five adult males were involved but no casualties were recorded.

This was contained in a statement titled, “Crash Report of a Burning Tanker at Ibafo along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.”

The statement read, “The crash occurred at 0657 hrs this morning on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway around the Ago Igbala/Ibafo area of Ogun State.

“A total of five persons were involved, all male adults, and fortunately, neither death nor injury were recorded.

“The vehicle involved was an IVECO truck with no number plate on it.

“The suspected cause of the lone crash was speed, and the vehicle lost control and crashed. The tanker was loaded with fuel, and no casualties were recorded.

“The rescue operation has come to a conclusion, but traffic managers are still managing the traffic situation caused by the crash.”

‘Two Nigerian women’ found dead in UK apartment

Two women have been found dead inside an apartment in Nottingham, UK.

In a statement, Nottinghamshire police said officers were called to a property in Radford, an inner-city area of Nottingham, on Tuesday morning over concerns about the welfare of the occupants.

Officers forced their way into the house by breaking down the back door and found the bodies of two women inside.

Daily Mail reports that neighbours believe that the women — mother and daughter with the former being in her 40s and the latter in her late teens or early 20s — are originally from Nigeria.

Ruby Burrow, Nottinghamshire police spokesperson, said the bodies were “lain undiscovered for some time”, adding that investigations are on to ascertain how and when the women died.

“Police were called at 11.04 am yesterday after concerns were raised for the welfare of the occupants of a property in Hartley Road, Radford,” the statement reads.

“Officers later gained entry to the address and found the bodies of two women inside. It is believed they had lain undiscovered for some time.

“Whilst we don’t believe there to be an immediate risk to the public, we are keeping an open mind into what has happened at this address and will be working hard over the next few days to establish how and when these two women lost their lives.

“In the meantime, my thoughts — and those of every other officer involved in this investigation — are with those who have died, their family and friends.

“Whilst our investigation remains at an early stage, we do not currently believe what happened to be suspicious.”

The police said it has enlisted the help of a “forensic pathologist” who will be in a better position to determine what happened once officers conclude their report”.

NEIGHBOURS SPEAK

Deborah Williams, 48, who lives on the same street, narrated how social services had visited her home on different occasions because they were unable to find the deceased.

“The social workers would ask if I had seen them recently. But the fact is they would really keep themselves to themselves,” she said.

“I would only really notice them when they left the house to go out shopping. My mum would sometimes see them in the supermarket. The daughter would be pushing a trolley with one hand, with her mum holding the other.

“I never heard the girl speak. I don’t know how severe her disability was, but I think she was non-verbal. But her mum was always very calm with her when I heard them from my garden.

“It is very sad. I think social services have probably finally triggered the police to break in. They came on Tuesday morning and tried to bash the door down, then ended up using power tools to gain entry.”

Williams said she last saw the pair in February.

“They would go away somewhere for months at a time and then come back, so I just figured that is what had happened this time, and why I hadn’t seen them,” she said.

“Now I wish I had been a bit more switched on. But no one, not a friend or relative seems to have missed them apart from social services. I only ever saw one visitor — a woman who looked a bit like the mum who I took to be maybe a sister.

“I think perhaps the mum has passed away somehow. [The daughter] was not someone you could leave on her own. She was completely dependent on her mum.

“The last thing I heard (from the house)… was a sound that I originally thought was cats. I didn’t realise until now that I hadn’t heard a peep from either of them.”

Ade Chukwu, a 37-year-old, who lives close to the house, said they were “really quiet”.

“You wouldn’t have really known they were there. But it is really tragic. I feel very sorry for them. Something awful has obviously gone off in there. It is really sad to think they have probably been laying there for weeks,” Chukwu said.

Mohamed Hasan, another neighbour, said he would sometimes see what he assumed to be the mother and her physically challenged daughter waiting for a taxi in the morning.

“That is the only time I would see them. They wouldn’t be very social. Every day a taxi would come and they would be waiting here,” Hasan said.
