The University of Lagos (UNILAG), University of Ibadan and Covenant University have been named Nigeria’s top-ranked higher institutione in the newly released Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings 2027.
All three institutions were placed within the 801–1,000 global performance band in the annual evaluation published on September 30, 2026.
Joint Leaders: UNILAG, UI, and Covenant University share the top spot nationwide in the 801–1,000 global range.
Research Distinction: UNILAG recorded the highest research quality score among all evaluated Nigerian universities, scoring 67.8.
Runner-Up Institutions: Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Bayero University Kano (BUK), Landmark University, and the University of Ilorin followed closely in the 1,001–1,200 global tier.
Expanded National Footprint: A total of 29 Nigerian universities featured in the 2027 global rankings, marking a notable rise from the 24 institutions listed in the previous year’s edition.
