The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has destroyed expired donated medicines worth N59 million.
NAFDAC, in a post on X on Thursday, said the medicines were shipped from the United States through the Nigeria Ports Authority (NPA) Area 1 Port in Port Harcourt.
The agency said the destroyed medicines include antidepressants, anti-ulcer medicines, analgesics and medicines for the management of hypertension.
It explained that although donated medicines support healthcare delivery for vulnerable and underserved populations, expired and unsuitable products must be removed from the supply chain and safely destroyed to prevent misuse, diversion and unauthorised distribution.
“Conducted in collaboration with the Nigeria Customs Service and other sister agencies, the exercise highlights the importance of inter-agency cooperation in safeguarding the pharmaceutical supply chain,” the post reads.
It would be recalled that NAFDAC also destroyed bus-loads of expired, falsified, unregistered, and banned medicines in March.
The agency said the medicines, estimated at N100 billion, were seized from the Idumota Open Drug Market in Lagos.
The seizures were made over the course of three weeks during a reinforcement operation.
