1. Federal and state governments are beefing up security in schools across the country as the 2026/27 session commences on Monday.
The move is meant to protect students, teachers and property from possible attack by terrorists.
The Federal Ministry of Education said yesterday that the relevant security agencies had been mobilised for heightened vigilance, particularly around unity colleges and their immediate environments.
2. The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) yesterday raised objection to the prayer by Alhaji Atiku Abubakar to amend the suit seeking the disqualification of President Bola Tinubu and All Progressives Congress (APC) from the 2027 presidential election. Atiku, the presidential candidate of African Democratic Congress (ADC), and his party, filed the suit at the Federal High Court in Abuja, questioning President Tinubu’s National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) discharge certificate submitted to INEC by APC.

The Federal Government has assured students, parents and guardians of their safety as it announced the nationwide reopening of all federal unity colleges for academic activities on Monday, September 14, 2026, as scheduled. The Federal Ministry of Education, in a statement on Friday, said necessary arrangements had been put in place to ensure a safe, peaceful and seamless commencement of the new academic session.
4. Tension gripped Sokoto metropolis on Friday after an Islamic cleric, Malam Musa Lukwa, was stabbed shortly after leading the Juma’at prayer at his mosque in the Mabera area of the city. The cleric was allegedly attacked twice in the neck by a young man who was among the worshippers at the mosque.
5. The leadership of the National Assembly yesterday announced immediate suspension of parliamentary relationship with South Africa in reaction to the recent wave of xenophobic attacks on Nigerians living in that country. It deplored “the continuing reports of xenophobic attacks, violence, intimidation, destruction of property and other forms of hostility directed at Nigerians and other African nationals resident in the Republic of South Africa.”
6. The Air Component of Operation HADIN KAI has neutralised more than 18 terrorists and destroyed logistics hubs at Tumbunma Baba, Borno State, in precision air strikes. The Acting Military Information Officer, Headquarters Joint Task Force North East, Capt. Mohammed Goni, disclosed this in a statement on Friday.
7. The Kaduna State Police Command has arrested a man, Manaseh Jatau, over the killing of his 35-year-old girlfriend, Rebecca Jeremiah, following a dispute over a phone call from another woman. Jeremiah’s lifeless body was found along Mai Angwa Street, Romi, Kaduna, at about 7am on Saturday, September 5, 2026, according to the police.

9. Detectives attached to the Ibafo Division of the Ogun State Police Command have arrested three women suspected of belonging to a child-stealing syndicate. The state Police Public Relations Officer, Oluseyi Babaseyi, disclosed this in a statement shared by the command on its X page on Friday. The police identified the three arrested suspects as Kikelomo Jimoh, Kayode Elizabeth and Blessing Anochike, adding that three children connected to the case were rescued.
10. The Niger Government has warned residents and communities along the Kaduna River Basin of possible increases in water levels following sustained inflows into the Shiroro Reservoir during the ongoing 2026 rainy season. The government said a controlled release of water from the Shiroro Reservoir might become necessary in September to enhance the safety of the dam structure and downstream communities.
