1. The Department of State Services (DSS) is beefing up security for ex-Vice President Atiku Abubakar, Peter Obi, and 16 other presidential candidates as they prepare to move to the field for campaign ahead of the January 2027 election.
A similar security measure has been extended to all presidential running mates,including ex-governors Rotimi Amaechi who is on the ticket of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) with Atiku, and Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso who is flying the flag of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) with Obi.
2. Finance Minister Taiwo Oyedele yesterday described the latest rating of Nigeria’s economic outlook by Moody’s Ratings, one of the world’s biggest credit rating agencies, as an important external validation of the difficult but necessary reforms introduced by the Tinubu Administration. Moody’s, in the rating released on Friday, upgraded Nigeria’s outlook from ‘stable’ to ‘positive’. It also kept Nigeria’s long-term foreign and local currency rating at B3
3. The All Progressives Congress has rejected calls for a return of the petrol subsidy, warning Nigerians against politicians promising to reverse one of the major economic reforms introduced by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. The Director-General of the APC 2027 Presidential Campaign Council, Senator Abdulaziz Yari, said any politician campaigning on a promise to restore the subsidy regime is misleading the public.
4. The Government of Burkina Faso has called for a bilateral session with Nigeria to review existing areas of cooperation and explore new prospects for relations between the two West African countries, in what could mark a fresh effort to ease recent diplomatic strains between Abuja and Ouagadougou. The proposal came as Nigeria’s new Ambassador to Burkina Faso, Syndoph Paebi Endoni, presented a copy of his Letter of Credence to the Burkinabe Minister of Foreign Affairs, Jean-Marie Karamoko Traoré, in Ouagadougou on Friday.
5. The Independent National Electoral Commission on Saturday released the names and particulars of governorship candidates and their running mates across the country. The publication, contained in Form EC9, was pasted at INEC headquarters across the states, effectively ending uncertainty over candidates that will fly the flags of the major political parties in the country. The All Progressives Congress, African Democratic Congress, Nigeria Democratic Congress, Peoples Democratic Party and Allied Peoples Movement dominated the lists, which contain the ages of candidates, their educational backgrounds and other credentials.
6. Troops of Operation ENDURING PEACE have foiled an attempt to move illicit arms through Zak Village in the Wase Local Government Area of Plateau State, recovering two AK-47 rifles and other items. The operation was carried out on Saturday, August 29, 2026, during a stop-and-search exercise when troops intercepted a green Volkswagen Golf vehicle for a routine search. A statement by the Nigerian Army on its X handle on Sunday, said a thorough inspection of the vehicle uncovered “a specially fabricated concealed compartment” within the dashboard.
7. The Lagos State Government has commenced the controlled demolition of shanties and other informal structures erected beneath high-tension electricity lines in the Ikola community, Agbado Oke-Odo Local Council Development Area, following a recent communal clash that left four people dead.
8. The Police in Benue State have arrested a 500-level student of Fr Moses Adasu University, formerly Benue State University, for allegedly attacking a neighbour with hot water.
The spokesperson for the state command, DSP Peter Aondongu, told journalists on Saturday that an investigation had commenced to unravel the cause of fighting between the two students. He said, “Yes, it happened yesterday, Friday, August 28, 2026.
9. The candidate of the All Progressives Congress in the August 15 Osun governorship poll, Bola Oyebamiji, has congratulated the state governor, Ademola Adeleke, who was returned in the election by the Independent National Electoral Commission. Oyebamiji, who alleged attacks on small and medium-sized businesses due to perceived political affiliations, also demanded an end to the killings, harassment and intimidation of APC members and supporters across the state.
10. The 2027 African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, has explained why he remains determined to seek the presidency despite contesting and losing several times in the past.
Atiku said his repeated attempts were part of his political journey, which began with his opposition to military rule and the disqualifications he faced while seeking to become governor.
The former Vice President made the remarks in an interview with the BBC published on Friday. Explaining why he had continued to contest despite previous defeats, Atiku said he had never had an easy political career.
