The Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) is continuing with its decision to demolish buildings and structures on waterways and erosion paths across the nation’s capital.

Several residents were left stranded while vehicles were submerged in several parts of Abuja, including Maitama, Wuse 2, Gudu, Lokogoma, and other areas, on August 16, after a flash flood.

The downpour left parts of Wuse 2, including Adetokunbo Ademola Crescent, as well as the area around Delight Event Centre in Gudu and Efab estate in Lokogoma, heavily flooded.

The bridge linking Gaduwa and Durumi was also heavily flooded, leaving motorists stranded and disrupting movement.

Some vehicles were submerged or damaged by the floodwaters, while businesses in affected areas were forced to close.

Viral videos of the flood showed floodwaters covering the Ebeano-Gudu road and the bridge connecting the two areas.

Following the incident, the minister of the FCT, Nyesom Wike, ordered the immediate demolition of houses obstructing waterways in Maitama and other flood-prone areas of Abuja.

Wike issued the directive after inspecting areas affected by flooding in Maitama.

He said the demolition would begin immediately and continue until, irrespective of political activities or the status of the owners of the affected properties.

Last Tuesday, the FCTA began the demolition of houses and other structures built on designated water channels around Maitama.

However, according to TheCable report, some of the structures earlier demolished are already being rebuilt.
