An 18-day-old baby has been rescued from the rubble of a collapsed building 32 hours after the twin earthquakes that devastated a Venezuelan coastal city.
The rescue, according to multiple reports, took place in the coastal city of La Guaira, one of the areas hardest hit by the disaster.
Videos showed emergency responders pulling the baby from the debris before handing the child to a man believed to be the father.
The baby’s mother was also rescued alive from the collapsed building shortly afterwards, according to reports.
Tom Fletcher, the United Nations humanitarian chief, told AFP that more than 50,000 people remain unaccounted for after two powerful earthquakes hit northern Venezuela within minutes of each other on Wednesday evening.
The earthquakes, measuring 7.2 and 7.5 in magnitude, struck less than a minute apart while many Venezuelans were at home observing a national holiday.
The twin quakes triggered widespread destruction, reducing homes, schools and public infrastructure to rubble in several communities.
Thousands of survivors have also been displaced, with emergency shelters established for those forced to flee their homes.
Rescue efforts have continued in the affected areas as emergency workers race to locate survivors trapped beneath collapsed buildings, while humanitarian agencies work to provide food, water, and medical care.
