1. Major political parties have warned that the delay in the release of funds to the Independent National Electoral Commission for the 2027 general elections may undermine election preparations and the credibility of the polls.
The African Democratic Congress, Peoples Democratic Party and Nigeria Democratic Congress said delayed funding could disrupt key procurement timelines, erode public confidence in the electoral process and ultimately threaten the smooth conduct of the 2027 elections
2. The joint security operation between the Police Commands in Ogun and Lagos State has rescued five kidnapped victims and neutralised four suspected kidnappers in Ogun. The Commissioners of Police in Ogun and Lagos states, Mr Bode Ojajuni and Mr Fatai Tijani, disclosed this while briefing newsmen on Saturday at the Police Training School, Iperu.
3. The Christian Association of Nigeria in the 19 northern states and the Federal Capital Territory, alongside bishops under the aegis of the Ecumenical Synods of Bishops, Archbishops, Apostles and Senior Clergy, have dismissed the claim by the United States President, Donald Trump, that the US military had ended the killing of Christians in Nigeria.
4. Nigerian Army has carried out a major shake-up of its senior leadership, redeploying General Officers Commanding, GOCs, brigade commanders and other senior officers. The redeployment, approved by the Chief of Army Staff, COAS, Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, affects key operational, command, training and staff appointments, including the leadership of major military formations and institutions.
5. Seven suspected Boko Haram and ISWAP commanders who were returning from Saudi Arabia pilgrimage were recently arrested at the Katsina airport, according to Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo. Tunji-Ojo said Nigeria’s integrated identity management system aided the arrest of the suspects, who were handed over to the Department of State Services, DSS.
6. The Police Command in Niger says it has arrested three suspects for unlawful possession of a firearm and ammunition. This is contained in a statement issued by its Public Relations Officer, SP Wasiu Abiodun, on Saturday in Minna. Abiodun said that on June 22 at about 12.30 a.m., credible intelligence led police operatives in Lapai Division to three suspicious persons seen on a motorcycle passing through Yawa village via Lapai.
7. Oyo State Government has lifted the curfew earlier imposed on 10 local government areas as part of measures to facilitate the rescue of the abducted pupils and teachers of schools in Oriire Local Government Area of the state. The development was announced in a statement issued on Saturday by the Commissioner for Information, Dotun Oyelade, who said the decision followed a review of the security situation in the affected areas.
8. The African Democratic Congress, ADC, has condemned the ruling of a Lokoja Federal High Court setting aside its earlier judgment recognising Nigeria Democratic Congress, NDC as a political party. The party’s National Publicity Secretary, Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi, in a statement on Saturday in Abuja, described the court ruling against NDC as a threat to Nigeria’s democracy.
9. The All Progressives Congress, APC, has won the entire 24 chairmanship seats and 240 councillorship positions in the just concluded local government elections in Gombe state. The State Independent Electoral Commission, GOSIEC, made the announcement on Saturday in Gombe, the state capital.
10. The Borno State Police Command has intercepted 55 sacks containing 60ml bottles of an illicit substance popularly known as “Gumm” enroute international borders. The Public Relations Officer of the command, ASP Nahum Daso, who disclosed this in a statement on Saturday said the consignment were intercepted on 26th of June by operatives of the Command’s X-Squad along Baga Road- Bypass, Maiduguri.
