The Federal Government spent N57.78bn on security-related projects and operations in the first four months of 2026, despite worsening insecurity across the country, with no fewer than 98 criminal incidents including 51 attacks and abductions recorded nationwide in just one week.
Data obtained from the Open Treasury Portal showed that the spending, which covered defence equipment procurement, security infrastructure, military barracks, police facilities and other security-related projects, represented a 127.97 per cent increase from the N25.35bn spent during the corresponding period of 2025.

One of the sons of the late Major General Rabe Abubakar (rtd), Isyaka Rabe, has said his father had no history of diabetes or high blood pressure, contrary to claims attributed to the Katsina State Government. 3. Colleagues of a Lagos teacher, Peter Shodipe of Ijaiye Ojokoro Junior College, have appealed to authorities to thoroughly review the circumstances surrounding a drama presentation that allegedly triggered panic among students in the school.
Shodipe was arrested after a co-curricular programme organised by the National Value Education Department of the school caused confusion when some students mistook a drama presentation on banditry for a real-life attack
4. No fewer than 11 persons, including a pregnant woman and six children, have reportedly died in a boat mishap in Makurdi Local Government Area, LGA of Benue State. The incident occurred between 7 p.m. and 8 p.m. on Saturday as the victims were crossing a river from Wadata to Daududawada community during a heavy downpour that swept across parts of Makurdi.

The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, has cleared eight political parties and candidates for Saturday’s by-elections scheduled to fill vacant federal and state legislative seats in six states. The elections will be held in four senatorial districts in Rivers, Enugu, Nasarawa and Ondo states, one House of Representatives constituency in Kano State and a State House of Assembly constituency in Kebbi State.
6. Those responsible for the abduction of retired Maj.-Gen. Rabe Abubakar, who died in their custody, will be identified and brought to justice, the Defence Headquarters, DHQs, vowed on Sunday. Maj.-Gen. Abubakar was the former Director of Defence Information (DDI). DHQ Chief Administration Officer, Maj.-Gen. I.M. Abdullahi, described the late general as a distinguished officer whose service and sacrifice to the nation would remain indelible.
