APC replaces Uzodinmma with Masari as chairman as chairman of National Convention

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has reshuffled the leadership of its 2026 National Convention planning committee, replacing Imo State Governor Hope Uzodinmma with former Katsina State Governor Aminu Bello Masari, as chairman of the committee.

The change, announced in an official statement by the party’s national secretary, follows consultations with national stakeholders and comes ahead of the convention scheduled for late March.

Uzodinmma, who had been named to lead the 73‑member body just days earlier, will now serve as treasurer, while the committee’s membership has been expanded to 90, the statement said.

The shake‑up was reported by the party’s communication channels and confirmed in media accounts that noted the reconstitution of the central coordination committee overseeing preparatory work for the national convention. The convention is intended to reset the party’s internal leadership structure ahead of future elections.

Aminu Bello Masari, the new chairman, is a former governor widely regarded as a senior party figure. Under the revised arrangement, the committee also appointed former Senate President Anyim Pius Anyim as one vice chairman, with Kwara State Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq as another, while Yobe State Governor Mai Mala Buni continues as secretary.

The initial appointment of Uzodinmma earlier in the week was reported by national outlets, which also outlined the committee’s original composition and the schedule leading to the convention.

At that time, the committee was listed as 73 members drawn from governors, lawmakers and senior party leaders, signalling the start of formal preparations for the March 27–28 convention.

Friday’s reorganisation adds more names to the committee to widen representation and strengthen planning, according to party insiders cited in the announcement. New additions include Senator Barry Mpigi among other senior chieftains.

The broader national convention, set to follow state and zonal congresses, is a crucial step for the APC as it seeks to manage its internal affairs and present a united front. The rapid change in leadership, from the initial 73‑member list to an expanded 90‑member body with a different chair, underscores the fluid nature of party politics and the priority given to stakeholder consensus in the run‑up to the event.

Observers say such adjustments reflect ongoing negotiations among political blocs within the party, as well as efforts to ensure the convention proceeds smoothly with broad backing from key figures across Nigeria’s regions.
