Mustapha Adekunle (Sego), chairman of the Lagos state chapter of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), has condemned the recent violent incidents involving a leader of the union, Shamsideen Adio, popularly known as “Shamelon”.
Adio, who has been detained by the police, allegedly brutalized a dispatch rider and fatally assaulted Adeshina Rahman on Lagos Island.
According to the police, he is being detained on murder and assault charges.
The chairman, who led the branch chairmen of the Union in Lagos on a condolence visit to the family of the victim, appealed for calm, and prayed to God to grant the victim’s family the strength to bear the loss.
While emphasising that the union does not tolerate violence among its members, he said, “NURTW does not condone violence or any unlawful acts. No matter the closeness or loyalty of any member, I will not support maltreatment or unlawful conduct.”
He called on law enforcement agencies to carry out a thorough and impartial investigation, assuring that the suspect would also face the union’s internal disciplinary measures once the legal process is completed.
The union later released a statement signed by its chairman after the visit.
The statement read in part:
“On Saturday September 19, I led all the branch chairmen of our Lagos Island branches and a few of our members to pay a condolence visit to the family affected in the recent incident that involved one of our members.
“We extended our heartfelt sympathy, prayed with the family for strength, and encouraged them to remain steadfast during this difficult period.
“I appeal to members of the public and protesters to remain calm and conduct themselves peacefully. Please do not engage in the destruction of properties or violence, as the security operatives are actively handling the matter to ensure justice and order are maintained.
“I also wish to express my appreciation to the press, online bloggers, and social media users for keeping the public informed. I kindly plead that all coverage and posts be fair, accurate, and unbiased so that the truth prevails and the situation is not misrepresented.
“May Almighty Allah grant the departed soul eternal rest and give the family the fortitude to bear this painful loss. ”
