No fewer than 72 people have been killed during violent anti-corruption protests in Nepal this week, the government said  in an updated toll on Sunday, as the new interim government began work.

Eaknarayan Aryal, the government’s chief secretary said in a statement that “72 people have died, and 191 people are under treatment”.

In what has turned out as the deadliest outbreak of political violence in Nepal for decades, young Nepalis took to the streets of the capital and other cities early last week, prompting Prime Minister K.P. Sharma Oli to resign on Tuesday.

The death toll of 51 was updated as of Saturday. The latest data showed on Sunday that at least 2,113 people had been injured in the violence.
