A 30-year-old man, Sodiq Eniola, has been mobbed to death by an angry mob after he gruesomely killed three children in Oba-Ile, a community in Osun State.
The young siblings were reportedly hacked to death on Tuesday evening in their family’s compound at Ese Ola, Oba-Ile, by the 30-year-old, who was said to be a drug addict battling mental instability.
Eyewitnesses reported that the tragedy occurred around 8:05 p.m.
Eniola, described by neighbours as a disturbed youth, reportedly stormed the home of Ganiyu Bamidele in a frenzy, heading straight for a shop operated by the children’s mother, where the unsuspecting minors were sleeping.
Without warning, he reportedly launched a brutal machete attack on the children, cutting them down in an unexplainable manner.
The father of the victims, Bamidele, said the killing happened so fast that he could do nothing to stop it.
The broken man recounted that the suspect didn’t speak to anyone. “He just came in and started cutting them with a machete. By the time we realised what was going on, my children were already gone,” he said.
The suspect was immediately surrounded by an angry mob, who descended on him before police from the Oba-Ile Division arrived. Though officers attempted to rescue and rush him to a hospital, he died on the way from injuries sustained during the mob attack.
The bodies of the victims were said to have been deposited in a morgue.
The Public Relations Officer of the Osun Police Command, Abiodun Ojelabi, confirmed the incident, noting that the suspect died en route to the hospital after being severely beaten. He added that police had commenced a full investigation into the incident.
“This case is particularly heartbreaking. Preliminary reports suggest the attacker may have been under the influence of drugs. We are probing further to understand the full circumstances,” Ojelabi stated.
