1. The All Progressives Congress on Sunday attacked the immediate-past governor of Kaduna State, Nasir El-Rufai, as indications emerged that the former Federal Capital Territory minister was rallying northern leaders and bigwigs against President Bola Tinubu’s re-election ahead of the 2027 poll.
The APC National Secretary, Ajibola Basiru, accused El-Rufai of stoking ethnic agenda over his failure to get a cabinet appointment.
2. Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke, has directed the newly elected local government chairmen and councillors to stay away from their respective secretariats to prevent clashes with those allegedly occupying the offices illegally. Speaking on Sunday at the swearing-in ceremony, Adeleke commended the Osun State Independent Electoral Commission for adhering to due process in conducting the elections.
3. A 50-year-old farmer, identified as Alfa Mustapha, was shot dead at close range on his farm in Ageri Village, near Olodo in Odeda Local Government Area of Ogun State. Mustapha’s lifeless body was discovered on Saturday, February 22, after an unidentified assailant attacked him.
4. The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention has reported 80 deaths from 413 confirmed Lassa fever cases across 11 states during Epidemiological Week 6 (February 3 to 9, 2025). The federal disease control agency said the case fatality rate (CFR) had risen to 19.4 per cent, up from 17.5 per cent, in the same period in 2024.
5. Nigeria and China have signed a €7.6 billion (Euros) green hydrogen energy deal that will lead to a gradual transition from fossil fuels to clean energy, in line with global best practices. The agreement was signed at the weekend in Uyo, the Akwa Ibom State capital, between the Federal Government, APPL Hydrogen Limited (AHL), and a Chinese firm, LONGi Green Energy Technology Company Limited.
6. The federal government has spent approximately $8 billion to stabilise the naira, the Chief Executive Officer of Financial Derivatives Company, Bismarck Rewane, has said. His claim is coming amid the celebrated stability in the foreign exchange market with a dollar exchanging for N1, 500 as against the volatility experienced in the recent past.
7. The President of the Dangote Group, Alhaji Aliko Dangote, has revealed that the Dangote Petroleum Refinery currently has over 500 million litres of petrol in its reservoir. He also said the refinery now produces enough fuel for local consumption and export. Dangote spoke during a tour of the $20bn Lekki-based facility with the Zambia Minister for Energy, Makozo Chikote at the weekend.
8. The Qadi of the Shari’ah Court of Appeal, Kwara State, Justice Abdurraheem Sayi, has stated that approval of state authorities or traditional rulers is not needed for Muslims to establish and operate Shari’ah arbitration panels in the South-West. He described the objections to Shari’ah arbitration panels in the South-West as “legally baseless”.
9. The Edo State Police Command on Sunday confirmed the arrest of one Kelvin Izekor over the murder of his wife, Success Izekor, aged 38, on Saturday. In a viral video, police and residents of the area were seen taking the deceased who had matchet wounds on the head from her apartment into the police Hilux truck.
10. The Nigerian Association of Road Transport Owners has expressed concern over the potential impact of the Federal Government’s impending ban on large tankers carrying over 60,000 litres of petroleum products. Also, the Petroleum Products Retail Outlets Owners Association of Nigeria has called on President Bola Tinubu to intervene and mitigate the impact of the ban on large tankers on those affected.
