Tinubu orders sanction of civil servants taking salaries after relocating abroad

President Bola Tinubu has directed that all civil servants who are drawing salaries from the government after relocating abroad should be made to refund the money.

 

The President also directed that the supervisors and department heads of the culprits must also be punished for aiding and abetting the fraud under their watch.

 

Tinubu’ gave the directive on Saturday at the award night organised by the Office of the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation (HOCSF), to commemorate the 2024 Civil Service Week.

 

The event was also to honour some outstanding civil servants in core ministries.

 

Represented by Sen. George Akume, Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), the President expressed dismay over the attitude of the ghost workers.

 

“During my recent visit to South Africa, I kept abreast of the week’s activities.

 

“I was particularly struck by the revelations shared by the Head of the Civil Service, regarding employees who had relocated abroad while drawing salaries without formally resigning.

“It is heartening to hear that measures have been taken to address this issue, but we must ensure those responsible are held accountable and restitution is made.

 

“The culprits must be made to refund the money they have fraudulently collected.

 

“Their supervisors and department heads must also be punished for aiding and abetting the fraud under their watch,” Tinubu said.

 

He reiterated that government would take appropriate measures to ensure they were punished and the money refunded to government treasury.

 

The President acknowledged the challenges in the civil service sector and reiterated his commitment to address them for optimal performance.

 

“Our administration acknowledges the challenges the civil service is facing.

“I want to give you the assurance that we are committed to ensuring the welfare and development of all civil servants to deliver optimal performance for the growth of our nation.

 

“Over the past year, I have provided all the necessary support to the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation to ensure the continued stability of the civil service.

“I also supported the office in implementing far-reaching policies and reforms capable of improving efficiency and service delivery, ” the president said.

 

Other activities to mark the night was the presentation of top three prizes to the winners and additional N500, 000 cash prizes to 40 workers.

 

Making the presentation, Dr Folasade Yemi-Esan, the HOCSF, announced the top three prizes won by three officers at the event.

“The Star Prize is a Brand New 2023 JAC JS4 Luxury Model SUV; the second is a 2 Bedroom semi-detached bungalow; and the third top prize is a serviced plot of land measuring 400sqm.

 

“I am also pleased to announce that the Nigeria Customs Service has graciously committed to donating 6 Toyota
Camry Cars in support of the 2024 Civil Service Week.

 

”The office has started receiving the vehicles, and these will be presented as prizes to the next set of runner-up best performing officers,” she said.

Dr Mercy Ilori, a staff of Ministry of Transportation, won the star prize.

She appreciated Yemi-Esan, the Federal Government on behalf of other awardees for the gesture and the honour done to them.

Mikah Suleiman, the abducted parish priest of St. Raymond Catholic Church in Damba, Gusau, Zamfara state, has pleaded for help to regain freedom.

 

In a 51-second video clip trending on social media, Suleiman, dressed in a blue T-shirt with boxer shorts, is seen sitting on the ground while calling for help.

 

Suleiman was kidnapped by bandits in the early hours of June 22 at the rectory located within the church premises in Gusau, the state capital.

 

The priest said he was the only one being held captive by the bandits.

 

“I am pleading for help to be freed from this place. They (bandits) told me that they don’t keep people here for long. People don’t stay for up to a week,” he said.

 

“They told me that killing a person is not difficult for them. They said they are just helping me by keeping me; please, I am asking for help.

“Please save my life in the name of God. Look at my head; look at my legs. I was tied to a robe, and I am the only one in this place.

“Normally, if they kidnap somebody, they don’t waste time.

 

“If ransom is not paid immediately, they kill the person. Please, for God’s sake, help me.”

 

A few seconds to the end of the video, a stick from one of the bandits standing off the camera was seen touching his head.

Army promotes first female officer trained in UK military academy to Lieutenant

Lieutenant General Taoreed Lagbaja, Chief of Army Staff, has ordered the promotion of Second Lieutenant Oluchukwu Owowoh to the substantive rank of Lieutenant in the Nigerian Army.

 

The Nigerian Defence Academy disclosed this in a statement on X.com on Wednesday.

The statement by the NDA on Wednesday partly read, “Speaking during the decoration ceremony that took place today, June 26, 2024, at the Nigerian Defence Academy Officer’s Mess and Golf Club, the NDA Commandant, Major General JO Ochai, extolled the track record of excellence of Lt. Owowoh as a cadet, which accorded her the rare privilege of becoming the first female Nigerian to be trained at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst as well as her promotion to the new rank.

 

“The event was attended by senior military officers, academic and non-academic staff, and family members, among others.”

 

In April, Owowoh, 24, made history when she became the first Nigerian female officer to graduate from the Royal Military Academy, Sandhurst, in the United Kingdom.

Tinubu meets with governors, ministers over minimum wage, economy

President Bola Tinubu, on Thursday, met with governors of the 36 states of the federation and ministers over the new minimum wage demand by organised labour and other economic matters.

 

Vice-President Kashim Shettima chaired the meeting at the council chamber of the presidential villa before Tinubu arrived at the venue. 

 

The meeting comes about 48 hours after the federal executive council (FEC) stepped down the memo on the new minimum wage for the president to consult with the governors and the private sector.

 

The governors, under the aegis of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF), met in Abuja on Wednesday to deliberate on the minimum wage for workers.

 

Over the past few months, the federal and state governments, organised labour, and the private sector have been negotiating a new minimum wage.

 

At the last meeting of the tripartite committee on minimum wage, organised labour rejected the N62,000 proposal by the government and insisted on N250,000.

The federal government had asked the labour unions to demand a more realistic and sustainable minimum wage.

 

On June 7, governors under the aegis of the Nigerian Governors Forum (NGF) said the N60,000 minimum wage for workers was unsustainable.
