The Nigerian aviation industry was spared yet another tragedy on Sunday after a domestic carrier, United Nigeria Airlines, bound for Abuja landed in Asaba, the Delta state capital.
The airline would later blame “poor weather” for the diversion.
Meawhile, there was drama on Flight NUA 0504 from the Lagos airport when the Abuja-bound passengers were flown to Asaba airport.
The cabin crew, upon landing in Asaba, told the passengers that they had arrived at Abuja airport, creating confusion among the passengers.
But in a statement by a spokesman for the airline, Achilleus-Chud Uchegbu, United Nigeria Airlines acknowledged the error on the part of its cabin crew.
The airline explained that the pilots of the aircraft temporarily diverted the flight to the Asaba airport due to “poor destination weather”.
“At all material time, the Pilot of the aircraft was aware of the temporary diversion and was properly briefed.
“Meanwhile, the aircraft has landed safely in Abuja following improvement on destination weather,” the statement read.
