A policeman, identified as Inspector Jacob Daniel, died on Tuesday during a conflict between officers and military personnel in Adamawa State.
This was confirmed by a statement on Wednesday by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Suleiman Yahaya Nguroje, on behalf of the police commissioner.
According to sources who wished to be anonymous, an Army personnel was shot in the leg at one of the checkpoints located at the target junction in Jimeta, mounted by the police and the vigilantes.
It was in response to this that the army mobilised and attacked the police headquarters in Yola, the state capital, resulting in the death of a police officer, identified as Inspector Jacob Daniel.
An eyewitness, who narrated the incident, stated that residents heard the shooting at the checkpoint and scampered to safety as tear gas canisters and sporadic gunshots were fired in the air.
The Commissioner of Police in the state, CP Afolabi Babatola, has since ordered an “immediate” investigation into the matter.
He warned that attacks on all security officers in the line of duty would no longer be tolerated under whatever guise.
According to Babatola, the police command holds the lives of all security personnel sacrosanct and “such unwarranted conflict” would be strictly treated according to extant laws.
He further reiterated the commitment of the command to the protection of lives and property while stressing that it is vital to work with other sister security agents in protecting the fundamental rights of security operatives to enable them to advance their sacred mandate of serving and protecting the citizens better.
The police boss appealed for calm, as the top management of both security agencies is doing everything legally possible to address the situation.
